John 11	John 11
John 11:1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.	John 11:1 Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
John 11:2 And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.	John 11:2 (The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)
John 11:3 The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.	John 11:3 So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.
John 11:4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.	John 11:4 When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.
John 11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.	John 11:5 Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
John 11:6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.	John 11:6 So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.
John 11:7 Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.	John 11:7 Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
John 11:8 The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?	John 11:8 The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?
John 11:9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.	John 11:9 Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.
John 11:10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.	John 11:10 But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.
John 11:11 These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.	John 11:11 These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.
John 11:12 The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.	John 11:12 Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.
John 11:13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.	John 11:13 Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.
John 11:14 Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.	John 11:14 Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.	John 11:15 And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.
John 11:16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.	John 11:16 Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.
John 11:17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.	John 11:17 Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.
John 11:18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;	John 11:18 Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;
John 11:19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.	John 11:19 And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.
John 11:20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.	John 11:20 When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.
John 11:21 Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	John 11:21 Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.
John 11:22 And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.	John 11:22 But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.
John 11:23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.	John 11:23 Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.
John 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.	John 11:24 Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.
John 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;	John 11:25 Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;
John 11:26 and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?	John 11:26 And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?
John 11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, [even] he that cometh into the world.	John 11:27 She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.
John 11:28 And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is her, and calleth thee.	John 11:28 And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.
John 11:29 And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.	John 11:29 And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.
John 11:30 (Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)	John 11:30 Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.
John 11:31 The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there.	John 11:31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.
John 11:32 Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.	John 11:32 When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.
John 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews [also] weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,	John 11:33 And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,
John 11:34 and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.	John 11:34 And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.
John 11:35 Jesus wept.	John 11:35 And Jesus himself was weeping.
John 11:36 The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!	John 11:36 So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!
John 11:37 But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?	John 11:37 But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?
John 11:38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.	John 11:38 So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.
John 11:39 Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been [dead] four days.	John 11:39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.
John 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?	John 11:40 Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?
John 11:41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.	John 11:41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.
John 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.	John 11:42 I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.
John 11:43 And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.	John 11:43 Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!
John 11:44 He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.	John 11:44 And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.
John 11:45 Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.	John 11:45 Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.
John 11:46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.	John 11:46 But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.
John 11:47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.	John 11:47 Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.
John 11:48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.	John 11:48 If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.
John 11:49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,	John 11:49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;
John 11:50 nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.	John 11:50 You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.
John 11:51 Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;	John 11:51 He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;
John 11:52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad.	John 11:52 And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.
John 11:53 So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.	John 11:53 And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.
John 11:54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.	John 11:54 So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.
John 11:55 Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves.	John 11:55 Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.
John 11:56 They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast?	John 11:56 They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?
John 11:57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him.	John 11:57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.
