| Und bald am Morgen hielten die Hohenpriester einen Rat mit den Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten, dazu der ganze Rat, und banden Jesum und führten ihn hin und überantworteten ihn dem Pilatus. | And the first thing in the morning the chief priests, with those in authority and the scribes and all the Sanhedrin, had a meeting, and put cords round Jesus, and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate. |
| Und Pilatus fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden? Er antwortete aber und sprach zu ihm: Du sagst es. | And Pilate put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And he, answering, said to him, You say so. |
| Und die Hohenpriester beschuldigten ihn hart. | And the chief priests said a number of things against him. |
| Pilatus aber fragte ihn abermals und sprach: Antwortest du nichts? Siehe, wie hart sie dich verklagen! | And Pilate again put a question, Do you say nothing in answer? see how much evil they say you have done. |
| Jesus aber antwortete nichts mehr, also daß sich auch Pilatus verwunderte. | But Jesus gave no more answers, so that Pilate was full of wonder. |
| Er pflegte aber ihnen auf das Osterfest einen Gefangenen loszugeben, welchen sie begehrten. | Now at the feast every year he let one prisoner go free at their request. |
| Es war aber einer, genannt Barabbas, gefangen mit den Aufrührern, die im Aufruhr einen Mord begangen hatten. | And there was one named Barabbas, in prison with those who had gone against the government and in the fight had taken life. |
| Und das Volk ging hinauf und bat, daß er täte, wie er pflegte. | And the people went up, requesting him to do as he had done for them in other years. |
| Pilatus aber antwortete ihnen: Wollt ihr, daß ich euch den König der Juden losgebe? | And Pilate said in answer to them, Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free? |
| Denn er wußte, daß ihn die Hohenpriester aus Neid überantwortet hatten. | For he saw that the chief priests had given him up through envy. |
| Aber die Hohenpriester reizten das Volk, das er ihnen viel lieber den Barabbas losgäbe. | But the people were moved by the chief priests to make him let Barabbas go free. |
| Pilatus aber antwortete wiederum und sprach zu ihnen: Was wollt ihr denn, daß ich tue dem, den ihr beschuldigt, er sei der König der Juden? | And Pilate again said in answer to them, What then am I to do to him to whom you give the name of the King of the Jews? |
| Sie schrieen abermals: Kreuzige ihn! | And they said again loudly, To the cross with him! |
| Pilatus aber sprach zu ihnen: Was hat er Übles getan? Aber sie schrieen noch viel mehr: Kreuzige ihn! | And Pilate said to them, Why, what evil has he done? But their cry was the louder, To the cross! |
| Pilatus aber gedachte, dem Volk genugzutun, und gab ihnen Barabbas los, und geißelte Jesum und überantwortete ihn, daß er gekreuzigt würde. | And Pilate, desiring to do what was pleasing to the people, let Barabbas go free, and gave up Jesus, when he had been whipped, to be put to death on the cross. |
| Die Kriegsknechte aber führten ihn hinein in das Richthaus und riefen zusammen die ganze Schar | And the men of the army took him away into the square in front of the building which is the Praetorium, and they got together all the band. |
| und zogen ihm einen Purpur an und flochten eine dornene Krone und setzten sie ihm auf, | And they put a purple robe on him, and twisting a crown of thorns, they put it on him; |
| und fingen an, ihn zu grüßen: Gegrüßet seist du, der Juden König! | And, as if honouring him, they said, Long life to the King of the Jews! |
| Und schlugen ihm das Haupt mit dem Rohr und verspeiten ihn und fielen auf die Kniee und beteten ihn an. | And they gave him blows on the head with a stick and put shame on him and, going down on their knees, gave him worship. |
| Und da sie ihn verspottet hatten, zogen sie ihm den Purpur aus und zogen seine eigenen Kleider an und führten ihn aus, daß sie ihn kreuzigten. | And when they had made sport of him, they took the purple robe off him and put his clothing on him. And they took him out to put him to death on the cross. |
| Und zwangen einen, mit Namen Simon von Kyrene, der vom Felde kam (der ein Vater war des Alexander und Rufus), daß er sein Kreuz trüge. | And they made one, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, who was going by, coming from the country, go with them, so that he might take his cross. |
| Und sie brachten ihn an die Stätte Golgatha, das ist verdolmetscht: Schädelstätte. | And they took him to the place named Golgotha, which is, Dead Man's Head. |
| Und sie gaben ihm Myrrhe im Wein zu trinken; und er nahm's nicht zu sich. | And they gave him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it. |
| Und da sie ihn gekreuzigt hatten, teilten sie seine Kleider und warfen das Los darum, wer etwas bekäme. | And he was nailed to the cross; and they made a division of his clothing among them, putting to the decision of chance what everyone was to take. |
| Und es war um die dritte Stunde, da sie ihn kreuzigten. | And it was the third hour when they put him on the cross. |
| Und es war oben über ihm geschrieben was man ihm schuld gab, nämlich: Der König der Juden. | And the statement of his crime was put in writing on the cross, THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
| Und sie kreuzigten mit ihm zwei Mörder, einen zu seiner Rechten und einen zur Linken. | And they put two thieves on crosses with him, one on his right side, and one on his left. |
| Da ward die Schrift erfüllet, die da sagt: "Er ist unter die Übeltäter gerechnet." | [] |
| Und die vorübergingen, lästerten ihn und schüttelten ihre Häupter und sprachen: Pfui dich, wie fein zerbrichst du den Tempel und baust ihn in drei Tagen! | And those who went by made sport of him, shaking their heads, and saying, Ha! you who give the Temple to destruction, and put it up again in three days, |
| Hilf dir nun selber und steig herab vom Kreuz! | Keep yourself from death, and come down from the cross. |
| Desgleichen die Hohenpriester verspotteten ihn untereinander samt den Schriftgelehrten und sprachen: Er hat anderen geholfen, und kann sich selber nicht helfen. | In the same way the chief priests, laughing at him among themselves with the scribes, said, A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. |
| Ist er Christus und König in Israel, so steige er nun vom Kreuz, daß wir sehen und glauben. Und die mit ihm gekreuzigt waren, schmähten ihn auch. | Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and have belief. And those who were put on crosses with him said evil things against him. |
| Und nach der sechsten Stunde ward eine Finsternis über das ganze Land bis um die neunte Stunde. | And when the sixth hour had come, it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour. |
| Und um die neunte Stunde rief Jesus laut und sprach: "Eli, Eli lama asabthani? das ist verdolmetscht: Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen? | And at the ninth hour, Jesus said in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me? |
| Und etliche, die dabeistanden, da sie es hörten, sprachen sie: Siehe er ruft den Elia. | And some of those who were near, hearing it, said, See, he is crying to Elijah. |
| Da lief einer und füllte einen Schwamm mit Essig und steckte ihn auf ein Rohr und tränkte ihn und sprach: Halt, laßt sehen, ob Elia komme und ihn herabnehme. | And one of them went quickly and, getting a sponge full of bitter wine, put it on a rod, and gave it to him for drink, saying, Let be; let us see if Elijah will come to take him down. |
| Aber Jesus schrie laut und verschied. | And Jesus gave a loud cry, and gave up his spirit. |
| Und der Vorhang im Tempel zerriß in zwei Stücke von obenan bis untenaus. | And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end. |
| Der Hauptmann aber, der dabeistand ihm gegenüber und sah, daß er mit solchem Geschrei verschied, sprach: Wahrlich, dieser Mensch ist Gottes Sohn gewesen! | And when the captain, who was near, saw how he gave up his spirit, he said, Truly this man was a son of God. |
| Und es waren auch Weiber da, die von ferne solches sahen; unter welchen war Maria Magdalena und Maria, Jakobus des Kleinen und des Joses Mutter, und Salome, | And there were women watching from a distance: among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome, |
| die ihm auch nachgefolgt waren, da er in Galiläa war, und gedient hatten, und viele andere, die mit ihm hinauf gen Jerusalem gegangen waren. | Who went with him when he was in Galilee and took care of him; and a number of other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. |
| Und am Abend, dieweil es der Rüsttag war, welcher ist der Vorsabbat, | And when it was evening, because it was the time of getting ready, that is, the day before the Sabbath, |
| kam Joseph von Arimathia, ein ehrbarer Ratsherr, welcher auch auf das Reich Gottes wartete. Der wagte es und ging hinein zu Pilatus und bat um den Leichnam Jesu. | There came Joseph of Arimathaea, a responsible man in high honour, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God; and he went in to Pilate without fear, and made a request for the body of Jesus. |
| Pilatus aber verwunderte sich, daß er schon tot war, und rief den Hauptmann und fragte ihn, ob er schon lange gestorben wäre. | And Pilate was surprised that he was dead; and, sending for the captain, he put a question to see if he had been dead for long. |
| Und als er's erkundet von dem Hauptmann, gab er Joseph den Leichnam. | And when he had news of it from the captain, he let Joseph have the body. |
| Und er kaufte eine Leinwand und nahm ihn ab und wickelte ihn in die Leinwand und legte ihn in ein Grab, das war in einen Felsen gehauen, und wälzte einen Stein vor des Grabes Tür. | And he got a linen cloth and, taking him down, put the linen cloth round him, and put him in a place for the dead which had been cut out of a rock; and a stone was rolled against the door. |
| Aber Maria Magdalena und Maria, des Joses Mutter, schauten zu, wo er hingelegt ward. | And Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses, saw where he was put. |
