| HERR, warum trittst du so ferne, verbirgst dich zur Zeit der Not? | Why do you keep far away, O Lord? why are you not to be seen in times of trouble? |
| Weil der Gottlose Übermut treibt, muß der Elende leiden; sie hängen sich aneinander und erdenken böse Tücke. | The evil-doer in his pride is cruel to the poor; let him be taken by the tricks of his invention. |
| Denn der Gottlose rühmt sich seines Mutwillens, und der Geizige sagt dem Herrn ab und lästert ihn. | For the evil-doer is lifted up because of the purpose of his heart, and he whose mind is fixed on wealth is turned away from the Lord, saying evil against him. |
| Der Gottlose meint in seinem Stolz, er frage nicht darnach; in allen seinen Tücken hält er Gott für nichts. | The evil-doer in his pride says, God will not make a search. All his thoughts are, There is no God. |
| Er fährt fort mit seinem Tun immerdar; deine Gerichte sind ferne von ihm; er handelt trotzig mit allen seinen Feinden. | His ways are ever fixed; your decisions are higher than he may see: as for his haters, they are as nothing to him. |
| Er spricht in seinem Herzen: Ich werde nimmermehr darniederliegen; es wird für und für keine Not haben. | He has said in his heart, I will not be moved: through all generations I will never be in trouble. |
| Sein Mund ist voll Fluchens, Falschheit und Trugs; seine Zunge richtet Mühe und Arbeit an. | His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and false words: under his tongue are evil purposes and dark thoughts. |
| Er sitzt und lauert in den Dörfern; er erwürgt die Unschuldigen heimlich; seine Augen spähen nach dem Armen. | He is waiting in the dark places of the towns: in the secret places he puts to death those who have done no wrong: his eyes are secretly turned against the poor. |
| Er lauert im Verborgenen wie ein Löwe in der Höhle; er lauert, daß er den Elenden erhasche, und er hascht ihn, wenn er ihn in sein Netz zieht. | He keeps himself in a secret place like a lion in his hole, waiting to put his hands on the poor man, and pulling him into his net. |
| Er zerschlägt und drückt nieder und stößt zu Boden den Armen mit Gewalt. | The upright are crushed and made low, and the feeble are overcome by his strong ones. |
| Er spricht in seinem Herzen: Gott hat's vergessen; er hat sein Antlitz verborgen, er wird's nimmermehr sehen. | He says in his heart, God has no memory of me: his face is turned away; he will never see it. |
| Stehe auf, HERR; Gott, erhebe deine Hand; vergiß der Elenden nicht! | Up! O Lord; let your hand be lifted: give thought to the poor. |
| Warum soll der Gottlose Gott lästern und in seinem Herzen sprechen: Du fragest nicht darnach? | Why has the evil-doer a low opinion of God, saying in his heart, You will not make search for it? |
| Du siehest ja, denn du schauest das Elend und den Jammer; es steht in deinen Händen. Die Armen befehlens's dir; du bist der Waisen Helfer. | You have seen it; for your eyes are on sorrow and grief, to take it into your hand: the poor man puts his faith in you; you have been the helper of the child who has no father. |
| Zerbrich den Arm des Gottlosen und suche heim das Böse, so wird man sein gottlos Wesen nimmer finden. | Let the arm of the sinner and the evil-doer be broken; go on searching for his sin till there is no more. |
| Der HERR ist König immer und ewiglich; die Heiden müssen aus seinem Land umkommen. | The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations are gone from his land. |
| Das Verlangen der Elenden hörst du, HERR; ihr Herz ist gewiß, daß dein Ohr darauf merket, | Lord, you have given ear to the prayer of the poor: you will make strong their hearts, you will give them a hearing: |
| daß du Recht schaffest dem Waisen und Armen, daß der Mensch nicht mehr trotze auf Erden. | To give decision for the child without a father and for the broken-hearted, so that the man of the earth may no longer be feared. |
