Exodus 20
|
And God said all these words: | And God spake all these words, saying, |
I am the Lord your God who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the prison-house. | I am Jehovah thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. |
You are to have no other gods but me. | Thou shalt have no other gods before me. |
You are not to make an image or picture of anything in heaven or on the earth or in the waters under the earth: | Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any likeness [of any thing] that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. |
You may not go down on your faces before them or give them worship: for I, the Lord your God, am a God who will not give his honour to another; and I will send punishment on the children for the wrongdoing of their fathers, to the third and fourth generation of my haters; | Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them, for I Jehovah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation of them that hate me, |
And I will have mercy through a thousand generations on those who have love for me and keep my laws. | and showing lovingkindness unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. |
You are not to make use of the name of the Lord your God for an evil purpose; whoever takes the Lord's name on his lips for an evil purpose will be judged a sinner by the Lord | Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. |
Keep in memory the Sabbath and let it be a holy day. | Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. |
On six days do all your work: | Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work; |
But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on that day you are to do no work, you or your son or your daughter, your man-servant or your woman-servant, your cattle or the man from a strange country who is living among you: | but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: |
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and everything in them, and he took his rest on the seventh day: for this reason the Lord has given his blessing to the seventh day and made it holy. | for in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Jehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. |
Give honour to your father and to your mother, so that your life may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. | Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee. |
Do not put anyone to death without cause. | Thou shalt not kill. |
Do not be false to the married relation. | Thou shalt not commit adultery. |
Do not take the property of another. | Thou shalt not steal. |
Do not give false witness against your neighbour. | Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. |
Let not your desire be turned to your neighbour's house, or his wife or his man-servant or his woman-servant or his ox or his ass or anything which is his. | Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's. |
And all the people were watching the thunderings and the flames and the sound of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when they saw it, they kept far off, shaking with fear. | And all the people perceived the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the voice of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off. |
And they said to Moses, To your words we will give ear, but let not the voice of God come to our ears, for fear death may come on us. | And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die. |
And Moses said to the people, Have no fear: for God has come to put you to the test, so that fearing him you may be kept from sin. | And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not. |
And the people kept their places far off, but Moses went near to the dark cloud where God was. | And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. |
And the Lord said to Moses, Say to the children of Israel, You yourselves have seen that my voice has come to you from heaven | And Jehovah said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. |
Gods of silver and gods of gold you are not to make for yourselves. | Ye shall not make [other gods] with me; gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto you. |
Make for me an altar of earth, offering on it your burned offerings and your peace-offerings, your sheep and your oxen: in every place where I have put the memory of my name, I will come to you and give you my blessing. | An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in every place where I record my name I will come unto thee and I will bless thee. |
And if you make me an altar of stone do not make it of cut stones: for the touch of an instrument will make it unclean. | And if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. |
And do not go up by steps to my altar, for fear that your bodies may be seen uncovered. | Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not uncovered thereon. |
