| The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, | La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie de la part de l`Éternel, en ces mots: |
| Give ear to the words of this agreement, and say to the men of Judah and to the people of Jerusalem, | Écoutez les paroles de cette alliance, Et parlez aux hommes de Juda et aux habitants de Jérusalem! |
| The Lord, the God of Israel, has said, Let that man be cursed who does not give ear to the words of this agreement, | Dis-leur: Ainsi parle l`Éternel, le Dieu d`Israël: Maudit soit l`homme qui n`écoute point les paroles de cette alliance, |
| To the order which I gave your fathers on the day when I took them out of the land of Egypt, out of the oven of iron, saying, Give ear to my voice, and do all the orders I have given you: so you will be my people, and I will be your God: | Que j`ai prescrite à vos pères, Le jour où je les ai fait sortir du pays d`Égypte, De la fournaise de fer, en disant: Écoutez ma voix, et faites tout ce que je vous ordonnerai; Alors vous serez mon peuple, Je serai votre Dieu, |
| So that I may give effect to the oath which I made to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey as at this day. And I said in answer, So be it, O Lord. | Et j`accomplirai le serment que j`ai fait à vos pères, De leur donner un pays où coulent le lait et le miel, Comme vous le voyez aujourd`hui. -Et je répondis: Amen, Éternel! |
| And the Lord said to me, Give out these words in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, Give ear to the words of this agreement and do them. | L`Éternel me dit: Publie toutes ces paroles dans les villes de Juda Et dans les rues de Jérusalem, en disant: Écoutez les paroles de cette alliance, Et mettez-les en pratique! |
| For I gave certain witness to your fathers on the day when I took them up out of the land of Egypt, and even to this day, getting up early and witnessing and saying, Give ear to my voice. | Car j`ai averti vos pères, Depuis le jour où je les ai fait monter du pays d`Égypte Jusqu`à ce jour, Je les ai avertis tous les matins, en disant: Écoutez ma voix! |
| But they gave no attention and did not give ear, but they went on, every man in the pride of his evil heart: so I sent on them all the curses in this agreement, which I gave them orders to keep, but they did not. | Mais ils n`ont pas écouté, ils n`ont pas prêté l`oreille, Ils ont suivi chacun les penchants de leur mauvais coeur; Alors j`ai accompli sur eux toutes les paroles de cette alliance, Que je leur avais ordonné d`observer et qu`ils n`ont point observée. |
| And the Lord said to me, There is an evil design at work among the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem. | L`Éternel me dit: Il y a une conjuration entre les hommes de Juda Et les habitants de Jérusalem. |
| They are turned back to the sins of their fathers, who would not give ear to my words; they have gone after other gods and become their servants: the people of Israel and the people of Judah have not kept the agreement which I made with their fathers. | Ils sont retournés aux iniquités de leurs premiers pères, Qui ont refusé d`écouter mes paroles, Et ils sont allés après d`autres dieux, pour les servir. La maison d`Israël et la maison de Juda ont violé mon alliance, Que j`avais faite avec leurs pères. |
| So the Lord has said, I will send evil on them, which they will not be able to get away from; and they will send up a cry for help to me, but I will not give ear to them. | C`est pourquoi ainsi parle l`Éternel: Voici, je vais faire venir sur eux des malheurs Dont ils ne pourront se délivrer. Ils crieront vers moi, Et je ne les écouterai pas. |
| Then the towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go crying for help to the gods to whom they have been burning perfumes: but they will give them no salvation in the time of their trouble. | Les villes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem Iront invoquer les dieux auxquels ils offrent de l`encens, Mais ils ne les sauveront pas au temps de leur malheur. |
| For the number of your gods is as the number of your towns, O Judah; and for every street in Jerusalem you have put up altars to the Baal for burning perfumes to the Baal. | Car tu as autant de dieux que de villes, ô Juda! Et autant Jérusalem a de rues, Autant vous avez dressé d`autels aux idoles, D`autels pour offrir de l`encens à Baal... |
| And as for you, make no prayers for this people, send up no cry or prayer for them: for I will not give ear to their cry in the time of their trouble. | Et toi, n`intercède pas en faveur de ce peuple, N`élève pour eux ni supplications ni prières; Car je ne les écouterai pas, Quand ils m`invoqueront à cause de leur malheur. |
| About Judah. What have you to do in my house? is it your thought that oaths and holy flesh will get you out of your trouble? will you make yourself safe in this way? | Que ferait mon bien-aimé dans ma maison? Il s`y commet une foule de crimes. La chair sacrée disparaîtra devant toi. Quand tu fais le mal, c`est alors que tu triomphes! |
| You had been named by the Lord, A branching olive-tree, fair with beautiful fruit: with the noise of a great rushing he has put it on fire and its branches are broken. | Olivier verdoyant, remarquable par la beauté de son fruit, Tel est le nom que t`avait donné l`Éternel; Au bruit d`un grand fracas, il l`embrase par le feu, Et ses rameaux sont brisés. |
| For the Lord of armies, by whom you were planted, has given his decision for evil against you, because of the evil which the people of Israel and the people of Judah have done, In moving me to wrath by offering perfumes to the Baal. | L`Éternel des armées, qui t`a planté, Appelle sur toi le malheur, A cause de la méchanceté de la maison d`Israël et de la maison de Juda, Qui ont agi pour m`irriter, en offrant de l`encens à Baal. |
| And the Lord gave me knowledge of it and I saw it: then you made clear to me their doings. | L`Éternel m`en a informé, et je l`ai su; Alors tu m`as fait voir leurs oeuvres. |
| But I was like a gentle lamb taken to be put to death; I had no thought that they were designing evil against me, saying, Come and let us make trouble his food, cutting him off from the land of the living, so that there may be no more memory of his name. | J`étais comme un agneau familier qu`on mène à la boucherie, Et j`ignorais les mauvais desseins qu`ils méditaient contre moi: Détruisons l`arbre avec son fruit! Retranchons-le de la terre des vivants, Et qu`on ne se souvienne plus de son nom! - |
| But, O Lord of armies, judging in righteousness, testing the thoughts and the heart, let me see your punishment come on them: for I have put my cause before you. | Mais l`Éternel des armées est un juste juge, Qui sonde les reins et les coeurs. Je verrai ta vengeance s`exercer contre eux, Car c`est à toi que je confie ma cause. |
| So this is what the Lord of armies has said about the men of Anathoth who have made designs against your life, saying, You are not to be a prophet in the name of the Lord, or death will overtake you by our hands: | C`est pourquoi ainsi parle l`Éternel contre les gens d`Anathoth, Qui en veulent à ta vie, et qui disent: Ne prophétise pas au nom de l`Éternel, Ou tu mourras de notre main! |
| So the Lord of armies has said, See, I will send punishment on them: the young men will be put to the sword; their sons and their daughters will come to death through need of food: | C`est pourquoi ainsi parle l`Éternel des armées: Voici, je vais les châtier; Les jeunes hommes mourront par l`épée, Leurs fils et leurs filles mourront par la famine. |
| Not one of them will keep his life, for I will send evil on the men of Anathoth in the year of their punishment. | Aucun d`eux n`échappera; Car je ferai venir le malheur sur les gens d`Anathoth, L`année où je les châtierai. |
