| Now in the fifteenth year of the rule of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being ruler of Judaea, and Herod being king of Galilee, his brother Philip king of the country of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias king of Abilene, | La quinzième année du règne de Tibère César, -lorsque Ponce Pilate était gouverneur de la Judée, Hérode tétrarque de la Galilée, son frère Philippe tétrarque de l`Iturée et du territoire de la Trachonite, Lysanias tétrarque de l`Abilène, |
| When Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of the Lord came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the waste land. | et du temps des souverains sacrificateurs Anne et Caïphe, -la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Jean, fils de Zacharie, dans le désert. |
| And he came into all the country round about Jordan, preaching baptism as a sign of forgiveness of sin for those whose hearts were changed. | Et il alla dans tout le pays des environs de Jourdain, prêchant le baptême de repentance, pour la rémission des péchés, |
| As it says in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the waste land, Make ready the way of the Lord, make his roads straight. | selon ce qui est écrit dans le livre des paroles d`Ésaïe, le prophète: C`est la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, Aplanissez ses sentiers. |
| Every valley will be lifted up, and all the mountains and hills made low, and the twisted will be made straight, and the rough ways smooth; | Toute vallée sera comblée, Toute montagne et toute colline seront abaissées; Ce qui est tortueux sera redressé, Et les chemins raboteux seront aplanis. |
| And all flesh will see the salvation of God. | Et toute chair verra le salut de Dieu. |
| So he said to the people who went out to him for baptism: You offspring of snakes, at whose word are you going in flight from the wrath to come? | Il disait donc à ceux qui venaient en foule pour être baptisés par lui: Races de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir? |
| Make clear by your acts that your hearts have been changed; and do not say to yourselves, We have Abraham for our father: for I say to you that God is able from these stones to make children of Abraham. | Produisez donc des fruits dignes de la repentance, et ne vous mettez pas à dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père! Car je vous déclare que de ces pierres Dieu peut susciter des enfants à Abraham. |
| And even now the axe is put to the root of the trees; and every tree which does not have good fruit will be cut down and put into the fire. | Déjà même la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres: tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bons fruits sera coupé et jeté au feu. |
| And the people put questions to him, saying, What have we to do? | La foule l`interrogeait, disant: Que devons-nous donc faire? |
| And he made answer and said to them, He who has two coats, let him give to him who has not even one; and he who has food, let him do the same. | Il leur répondit: Que celui qui a deux tuniques partage avec celui qui n`en a point, et que celui qui a de quoi manger agisse de même. |
| Then tax-farmers came to him for baptism and said to him, Master, what have we to do? | Il vint aussi des publicains pour être baptisés, et ils lui dirent: Maître, que devons-nous faire? |
| And he said to them, Do not make an attempt to get more money than the right amount. | Il leur répondit: N`exigez rien au delà de ce qui vous a été ordonné. |
| And men of the army put questions to him, saying, And what have we to do? And he said to them, Do no violent acts to any man, and do not take anything without right, and let your payment be enough for you. | Des soldats aussi lui demandèrent: Et nous, que devons-nous faire? Il leur répondit: Ne commettez ni extorsion ni fraude envers personne, et contentez-vous de votre solde. |
| And while the people were waiting, and all men were questioning in their hearts about John, if he was the Christ or not, | Comme le peuple était dans l`attente, et que tous se demandaient en eux-même si Jean n`était pas le Christ, |
| John made answer, saying to them all, Truly, I give you baptism with water, but one is coming who is greater than I, whose shoes I am not good enough to undo: he will give you baptism with the Holy Spirit, and with fire: | il leur dit à tous: Moi, je vous baptise d`eau; mais il vient, celui qui est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de délier la courroie de ses souliers. Lui, il vous baptisera du Saint Esprit et de feu. |
| In whose hand is the instrument with which he will make clean his grain; he will put the good grain in his store, but the waste will be burned in the fire which will never be put out. | Il a son van à la main; il nettoiera son aire, et il amassera le blé dans son grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s`éteint point. |
| And so comforting them with these and other words, he gave the good news to the people; | C`est ainsi que Jean annonçait la bonne nouvelle au peuple, en lui adressant encore beaucoup d`autres exhortations. |
| But Herod the king, because John had made a protest on account of Herodias, his brother's wife, and other evil things which Herod had done, | Mais Hérode le tétrarque, étant repris par Jean au sujet d`Hérodias, femme de son frère, et pour toutes les mauvaises actions qu`il avait commises, |
| Did this most evil thing of all, and had John shut up in prison. | ajouta encore à toutes les autres celle d`enfermer Jean dans la prison. |
| Now it came about that when all the people had been given baptism, Jesus, having had baptism with them, was in prayer, when, the heaven being open, | Tout le peuple se faisant baptiser, Jésus fut aussi baptisé; et, pendant qu`il priait, le ciel s`ouvrit, |
| The Holy Spirit came down in the form of a dove, and a voice came from heaven, saying, You are my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well pleased. | et le Saint Esprit descendit sur lui sous une forme corporelle, comme une colombe. Et une voix fit entendre du ciel ces paroles: Tu es mon Fils bien-aimé; en toi j`ai mis toute mon affection. |
| And Jesus at this time was about thirty years old, being the son (as it seemed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, | Jésus avait environ trente ans lorsqu`il commença son ministère, étant, comme on le croyait, fils de Joseph, fils d`Héli, |
| The son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, | fils de Matthat, fils de Lévi, fils de Melchi, fils de Jannaï, fils de Joseph, |
| The son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, | fils de Mattathias, fils d`Amos, fils de Nahum, fils d`Esli, fils de Naggaï, |
