The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Ecclesiastes 1:2 ^
All is to no purpose, said the Preacher, all the ways of man are to no purpose.
Ecclésiaste 1:2 ^
Vanité des vanités, dit l`Ecclésiaste, vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.
Ecclesiastes 1:3 ^
What is a man profited by all his work which he does under the sun?
Ecclésiaste 1:3 ^
Quel avantage revient-il à l`homme de toute la peine qu`il se donne sous le soleil?
Ecclesiastes 1:4 ^
One generation goes and another comes; but the earth is for ever.
Ecclésiaste 1:4 ^
Une génération s`en va, une autre vient, et la terre subsiste toujours.
Ecclesiastes 1:5 ^
The sun comes up and the sun goes down, and goes quickly back to the place where he came up.
Ecclésiaste 1:5 ^
Le soleil se lève, le soleil se couche; il soupire après le lieu d`où il se lève de nouveau.
Ecclesiastes 1:6 ^
The wind goes to the south, turning back again to the north; circling round for ever.
Ecclésiaste 1:6 ^
Le vent se dirige vers le midi, tourne vers le nord; puis il tourne encore, et reprend les mêmes circuits.
Ecclesiastes 1:7 ^
All the rivers go down to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the rivers go, there they go again.
Ecclésiaste 1:7 ^
Tous les fleuves vont à la mer, et la mer n`est point remplie; ils continuent à aller vers le lieu où ils se dirigent.
Ecclesiastes 1:8 ^
All things are full of weariness; man may not give their story: the eye has never enough of its seeing, or the ear of its hearing.
Ecclésiaste 1:8 ^
Toutes choses sont en travail au delà de ce qu`on peut dire; l`oeil ne se rassasie pas de voir, et l`oreille ne se lasse pas d`entendre.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 ^
That which has been, is that which is to be, and that which has been done, is that which will be done, and there is no new thing under the sun.
Ecclésiaste 1:9 ^
Ce qui a été, c`est ce qui sera, et ce qui s`est fait, c`est ce qui se fera, il n`y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil.
Ecclesiastes 1:10 ^
Is there anything of which men say, See, this is new? It has been in the old time which was before us.
Ecclésiaste 1:10 ^
S`il est une chose dont on dise: Vois ceci, c`est nouveau! cette chose existait déjà dans les siècles qui nous ont précédés.
Ecclesiastes 1:11 ^
There is no memory of those who have gone before, and of those who come after there will be no memory for those who are still to come after them.
Ecclésiaste 1:11 ^
On ne se souvient pas de ce qui est ancien; et ce qui arrivera dans la suite ne laissera pas de souvenir chez ceux qui vivront plus tard.
Ecclesiastes 1:12 ^
I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
Ecclésiaste 1:12 ^
Moi, l`Ecclésiaste, j`ai été roi d`Israël à Jérusalem.
Ecclesiastes 1:13 ^
And I gave my heart to searching out in wisdom all things which are done under heaven: it is a hard thing which God has put on the sons of men to do.
Ecclésiaste 1:13 ^
J`ai appliqué mon coeur à rechercher et à sonder par la sagesse tout ce qui se fait sous les cieux: c`est là une occupation pénible, à laquelle Dieu soumet les fils de l`homme.
Ecclesiastes 1:14 ^
I have seen all the works which are done under the sun; all is to no purpose, and desire for wind.
Ecclésiaste 1:14 ^
J`ai vu tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil; et voici, tout est vanité et poursuite du vent.
Ecclesiastes 1:15 ^
That which is bent may not be made straight, and that which is not there may not be numbered.
Ecclésiaste 1:15 ^
Ce qui est courbé ne peut se redresser, et ce qui manque ne peut être compté.
Ecclesiastes 1:16 ^
I said to my heart, See, I have become great and am increased in wisdom more than any who were before me in Jerusalem--yes, my heart has seen much wisdom and knowledge.
Ecclésiaste 1:16 ^
J`ai dit en mon coeur: Voici, j`ai grandi et surpassé en sagesse tous ceux qui ont dominé avant moi sur Jérusalem, et mon coeur a vu beaucoup de sagesse et de science.
Ecclesiastes 1:17 ^
And I gave my heart to getting knowledge of wisdom, and of the ways of the foolish. And I saw that this again was desire for wind.
Ecclésiaste 1:17 ^
J`ai appliqué mon coeur à connaître la sagesse, et à connaître la sottise et la folie; j`ai compris que cela aussi c`est la poursuite du vent.
Ecclesiastes 1:18 ^
Because in much wisdom is much grief, and increase of knowledge is increase of sorrow.
Ecclésiaste 1:18 ^
Car avec beaucoup de sagesse on a beaucoup de chagrin, et celui qui augmente sa science augmente sa douleur.
