| Now these are the nations which the Lord kept in the land for the purpose of testing Israel by them, all those who had had no experience of all the wars of Canaan; | Voici les nations que l`Éternel laissa pour éprouver par elles Israël, tous ceux qui n`avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan. |
| Only because of the generations of the children of Israel, for the purpose of teaching them war--only those who up till then had no experience of it; | Il voulait seulement que les générations des enfants d`Israël connussent et apprissent la guerre, ceux qui ne l`avaient pas connue auparavant. |
| The five chiefs of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites and the Zidonians and the Hivites living in Mount Lebanon, from the mountain Baal-hermon as far as Hamath: | Ces nations étaient: les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens, les Sidoniens, et les Héviens qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal Hermon jusqu`à l`entrée de Hamath. |
| For the purpose of testing Israel by them, to see if they would give ear to the orders of the Lord, which he had given to their fathers by the hand of Moses. | Ces nations servirent à mettre Israël à l`épreuve, afin que l`Éternel sût s`ils obéiraient aux commandements qu`il avait prescrits à leurs pères par Moïse. |
| Now the children of Israel were living among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites: | Et les enfants d`Israël habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, des Phéréziens, des Héviens et des Jébusiens; |
| And they took as wives the daughters of these nations and gave their daughters to their sons, and became servants to their gods. | ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, ils donnèrent à leurs fils leurs propres filles, et ils servirent leurs dieux. |
| And the children of Israel did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and put out of their minds the Lord their God, and became servants to the Baals and the Astartes. | Les enfants d`Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l`Éternel, ils oublièrent l`Éternel, et ils servirent les Baals et les idoles. |
| So the wrath of the Lord was burning against Israel, and he gave them up into the hands of Cushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel were his servants for eight years. | La colère de l`Éternel s`enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains de Cuschan Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie. Et les enfants d`Israël furent asservis huit ans à Cuschan Rischeathaïm. |
| And when the children of Israel made prayer to the Lord, he gave them a saviour, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. | Les enfants d`Israël crièrent à l`Éternel, et l`Éternel leur suscita un libérateur qui les délivra, Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère cadet de Caleb. |
| And the spirit of the Lord came on him and he became judge of Israel, and went out to war, and the Lord gave up Cushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, into his hands and he overcame him. | L`esprit de l`Éternel fut sur lui. Il devint juge en Israël, et il partit pour la guerre. L`Éternel livra entre ses mains Cuschan Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et sa main fut puissante contre Cuschan Rischeathaïm. |
| Then for forty years the land had peace, till the death of Othniel, the son of Kenaz. | Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans. Et Othniel, fils de Kenaz, mourut. |
| Then the children of Israel again did evil in the eyes of the Lord; and the Lord made Eglon, king of Moab, strong against Israel, because they had done evil in the Lord's eyes. | Les enfants d`Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l`Éternel; et l`Éternel fortifia Églon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu`ils avaient fait ce qui déplaît à l`Éternel. |
| And Eglon got together the people of Ammon and Amalek, and they went and overcame Israel and took the town of palm-trees. | Églon réunit à lui les fils d`Ammon et les Amalécites, et il se mit en marche. Il battit Israël, et ils s`emparèrent de la ville des palmiers. |
| And the children of Israel were servants to Eglon, king of Moab, for eighteen years. | Et les enfants d`Israël furent asservis dix-huit ans à Églon, roi de Moab. |
| Then when the children of Israel made prayer to the Lord, he gave them a saviour, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man; and the children of Israel sent an offering by him to Eglon, king of Moab. | Les enfants d`Israël crièrent à l`Éternel, et l`Éternel leur suscita un libérateur, Éhud, fils de Guéra, Benjamite, qui ne se servait pas de la main droite. Les enfants d`Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Églon, roi de Moab. |
| So Ehud made himself a two-edged sword, a cubit long, which he put on at his right side under his robe. | Éhud se fit une épée à deux tranchants, longue d`une coudée, et il la ceignit sous ses vêtements, au côté droit. |
| And he took the offering to Eglon, king of Moab, who was a very fat man. | Il offrit le présent à Églon, roi de Moab: or Églon était un homme très gras. |
| And after giving the offering, he sent away the people who had come with the offering. | Lorsqu`il eut achevé d`offrir le présent, il renvoya les gens qui l`avaient apporté. |
| But he himself, turning back from the stone images at Gilgal, said, I have something to say to you in secret, O king. And he said, Let there be quiet. Then all those who were waiting before him went out. | Il revint lui-même depuis les carrières près de Guilgal, et il dit: O roi! j`ai quelque chose de secret à te dire. Le roi dit: Silence! Et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui sortirent. |
| Then Ehud came in to him while he was seated by himself in his summer-house. And Ehud said, I have a word from God for you. And he got up from his seat. | Éhud l`aborda comme il était assis seul dans sa chambre d`été, et il dit: J`ai une parole de Dieu pour toi. Églon se leva de son siège. |
| And Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right side, and sent it into his stomach; | Alors Éhud avança la main gauche, tira l`épée de son côté droit, et la lui enfonça dans le ventre. |
| And the hand-part went in after the blade, and the fat was joined up over the blade; for he did not take the sword out of his stomach. And he went out into the ... | La poignée même entra après la lame, et la graisse se referma autour de la lame; car il ne retira pas du ventre l`épée, qui sortit par derrière. |
| Then Ehud went out into the covered way, shutting the doors of the summer-house on him and locking them. | Éhud sortit par le portique, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute, et tira le verrou. |
| Now when he had gone, the king's servants came, and saw that the doors of the summer-house were locked; and they said, It may be that he is in his summer-house for a private purpose. | Quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs du roi vinrent et regardèrent; et voici, les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées au verrou. Ils dirent: Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans la chambre d`été. |
| And they went on waiting till they were shamed, but the doors were still shut; so they took the key, and, opening them, saw their lord stretched out dead on the floor. | Ils attendirent longtemps; et comme il n`ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre haute, ils prirent la clé et ouvrirent, et voici, leur maître était mort, étendu par terre. |
| But Ehud had got away while they were waiting and had gone past the stone images and got away to Seirah. | Pendant leurs délais, Éhud prit la fuite, dépassa les carrières, et se sauva à Seïra. |
| And when he came there, he had a horn sounded in the hill-country of Ephraim, and all the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he at their head. | Dès qu`il fut arrivé, il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d`Éphraïm. Les enfants d`Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et il se mit à leur tête. |
| And he said to them, Come after me; for the Lord has given the Moabites, your haters, into your hands. So they went down after him and took the crossing-places of Jordan against Moab, and let no one go across. | Il leur dit: Suivez-moi, car l`Éternel a livré entre vos mains les Moabites, vos ennemis. Ils descendirent après lui, s`emparèrent des gués du Jourdain vis-à-vis de Moab, et ne laissèrent passer personne. |
| At that time they put about ten thousand men of Moab to the sword, every strong man and every man of war; not a man got away. | Ils battirent dans ce temps-là environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous robustes, tous vaillants, et pas un n`échappa. |
| So Moab was broken that day under the hand of Israel. And for eighty years the land had peace. | En ce jour, Moab fut humilié sous la main d`Israël. Et le pays fut en repos pendant quatre-vingts ans. |
| And after him came Shamgar, the son of Anath, who put to death six hundred Philistines with an ox-stick; and he was another saviour of Israel. | Après lui, il y eut Schamgar, fils d`Anath. Il battit six cents hommes des Philistins avec un aiguillon à boeufs. Et lui aussi fut un libérateur d`Israël. |
