| Now while Ezra was making his prayer and his statement of wrongdoing, weeping and falling down before the house of God, a very great number of men and women and children out of Israel came together round him: for the people were weeping bitterly. | Und da Esra also betete und bekannte, weinte und vor dem Hause Gottes lag, sammelten sich zu ihm aus Israel eine sehr große Gemeinde von Männern und Weibern und Kindern; denn das Volk weinte sehr. |
| And Shecaniah, the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answering, said to Ezra, We have done evil against our God, and have taken as our wives strange women of the peoples of the land: but still there is hope for Israel in this question. | Und Sechanja, der Sohn Jehiels, aus den Kindern Elam, antwortete und sprach zu Esra: Wohlan, wir haben uns an unserm Gott vergriffen, daß wir fremde Weiber aus den Völkern des Landes genommen haben. Nun, es ist noch Hoffnung für Israel über dem. |
| Let us now make an agreement with our God to put away all the wives and all their children, if it seems right to my lord and to those who go in fear of the words of our God; and let it be done in keeping with the law. | So laßt uns einen Bund machen mit unserm Gott, daß wir alle Weiber und die von ihnen geboren sind, hinaustun nach dem Rat des HERRN und derer, die die Gebote unsers Gottes fürchten, daß man tue nach dem Gesetz. |
| Up, now! for this is your business, and we are with you; take heart and do it. | So mache dich auf! denn dir gebührt's; wir wollen mit dir sein. Sei getrost und tue es! |
| Then Ezra got up, and made the chiefs of the priests and the Levites and all Israel take an oath that they would do this. So they took an oath. | Da stand Esra auf und nahm einen Eid von den Obersten der Priester und Leviten und des ganzen Israels, daß sie nach diesem Wort tun sollten. Und sie schwuren. |
| Then Ezra got up from before the house of God and went into the room of Jehohanan, the son of Eliashib; but when he came there, he took no food or drink, for he was sorrowing for the sin of those who had come back. | Und Esra stand auf vor dem Hause Gottes und ging in die Kammer Johanans, des Sohnes Eljasibs. Und da er dahin kam, aß er kein Brot und trank kein Wasser; denn er trug Leid um die Vergreifung derer, die gefangen gewesen waren. |
| And they made a public statement through all Judah and Jerusalem, to all those who had come back, that they were to come together to Jerusalem; | Und sie ließen ausrufen durch Juda und Jerusalem zu allen, die gefangen gewesen waren, daß sie sich gen Jerusalem versammelten. |
| And that if anyone did not come before three days were past, as ordered by the rulers and the responsible men, all his goods would be put under the curse, and he himself would be cut off from the meeting of the people who had come back. | Und welcher nicht käme in drei Tagen nach dem Rat der Obersten und Ältesten, des Habe sollte alle verbannt sein und er abgesondert von der Gemeinde der Gefangenen. |
| Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin came together to Jerusalem before three days were past; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month; and all the people were seated in the wide square in front of the house of God, shaking with fear because of this business and because of the great rain. | Da versammelten sich alle Männer Juda's und Benjamins gen Jerusalem in drei Tagen, das ist am zwanzigsten Tage des neunten Monats. Und alles Volk saß auf der Straße vor dem Hause Gottes und zitterte um der Sache willen und vom Regen. |
| And Ezra the priest got to his feet and said to them, You have done wrong and taken strange women for your wives, so increasing the sin of Israel. | Und Esra, der Priester, stand auf und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr habt euch vergriffen, daß ihr fremde Weiber genommen habt, daß ihr der Schuld Israels noch mehr machtet. |
| So now, give praise to the Lord, the God of your fathers, and do his pleasure; and make yourselves separate from the peoples of the land and from the strange women. | So bekennt nun dem HERRN, eurer Väter Gott, und tut sein Wohlgefallen und scheidet euch von den Völkern des Landes und von den fremden Weibern. |
| Then all the people, answering, said with a loud voice, As you have said, so it is right for us to do. | Da antwortete die ganze Gemeinde und sprach mit lauter Stimme: Es geschehe, wie du uns gesagt hast. |
| But the number of people is great, and it is a time of much rain; it is not possible for us to go on waiting outside, and this is not a thing which may be done in one day or even two: for our sin in this business is great. | Aber des Volks ist viel, und Regenzeit, und man kann nicht draußen stehen; so ist's auch nicht eines oder zweier Tage Werk, denn wir haben viel gemacht solcher Übertretungen. |
| So now let our rulers be representatives for all the people, and let all those in our towns who are married to strange women come at fixed times, and with them the responsible men and the judges of every town, till the burning wrath of our God is turned away from us, and this has been done. | Laßt uns unsre Obersten bestellen für die ganze Gemeinde, daß alle, die in unsern Städten fremde Weiber genommen haben, zu bestimmten Zeiten kommen und die Ältesten einer jeglichen Stadt und ihre Richter mit ihnen, bis daß von uns gewendet werde der Zorn unseres Gottes um dieser Sache willen. |
| Only Jonathan, the son of Asahel, and Jahzeiah, the son of Tikvah, were against this, Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supporting them. | (Nur Jonathan, der Sohn Asahels, und Jahseja, der Sohn Tikwas, setzten sich dawider, und Mesullam und Sabthai, der Levit, halfen ihnen.) |
| So those who had come back did so. And Ezra the priest, with certain heads of families, by their fathers' families, all of them by their names, were marked out; and on the first day of the tenth month they took their places to go into the question with care. | Und die Kinder der Gefangenschaft taten also. Und der Priester Esra und Männer, welche die Häupter ihrer Vaterhäuser waren, alle mit Namen genannt, wurden ausgesondert und setzten sich am ersten Tage des zehnten Monats, zu erforschen diese Sache; |
| And they got to the end of all the men who were married to strange women by the first day of the first month. | und sie richteten es aus an allen Männern, die fremde Weiber hatten, bis zum ersten Tage des ersten Monats. |
| And among the sons of the priests who were married to strange women were these: of the sons of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak and his brothers, Maaseiah and Eliezer and Jarib and Gedaliah. | Und es wurden gefunden unter den Kindern der Priestern, die fremde Weiber genommen hatten, nämlich unter den Kindern Jesuas, des Sohnes Jozadaks, und seinen Brüdern Maaseja, Elieser, Jarib und Gedalja, |
| And they gave their word that they would put away their wives; and for their sin, they gave an offering of a male sheep of the flock. | und sie gaben ihre Hand darauf, daß sie die Weiber wollten ausstoßen und zu ihrem Schuldopfer einen Widder für ihre Schuld geben; |
| And of the sons of Immer, Hanani and Zebadiah. | unter den Kindern Immer: Hanani und Sebadja; |
| And of the sons of Harim, Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah and Jehiel and Uzziah. | unter den Kindern Harim: Maaseja, Elia, Semaja Jehiel und Usia; |
| And of the sons of Pashhur, Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah. | unter den Kindern Pashur: Eljoenai, Maaseja, Ismael, Nathanael, Josabad und Eleasa; |
| And of the Levites, Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah (that is Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer. | unter den Leviten: Josabad, Simei und Kelaja (er ist der Kelita), Pethahja, Juda und Elieser; |
| And of the music-makers, Eliashib; and of the door-keepers, Shallum and Telem and Uri. | unter den sängern: Eljasib; unter den Torhütern: Sallum, Telem und Uri. |
| And of Israel, the sons of Parosh, Ramiah and Izziah and Malchijah and Mijamin and Eleazar and Malchijah and Benaiah. | Von Israel unter den Kindern Pareos: Ramja, Jesia, Malchia, Mijamin, Eleasar, Malchia und Benaja; |
| And of the sons of Elam, Mattaniah, Zechariah, and Jehiel and Abdi and Jeremoth and Elijah. | unter den Kindern Elam: Matthanja, Sacharja, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth und Elia; |
| And of the sons of Zattu, Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, and Jeremoth and Zabad and Aziza. | unter den Kindern Satthu: Eljoenai, Eljasib, Matthanja, Jeremoth, Sabad und Asisa; |
| And of the sons of Bebai, Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, Athlai. | unter den Kindern Bebai: Johanan, Hananja, Sabbai und Athlai; |
| And of the sons of Bani, Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub and Sheal, Jeremoth. | unter den Kindern Bani: Mesullam, Malluch, Adaja, Jasub, Seal und Jeremoth; |
| And of the sons of Pahath-moab, Adna and Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel and Binnui and Manasseh. | unter den Kindern Pahath-Moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaja, Maaseja, Matthanja, Bezaleel, Binnui und Manasse; |

| Of the sons of Nebo, Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Iddo, and Joel, Benaiah. | unter den Kindern Nebo: Jeiel, Matthithja, Sabad, Sebina, Jaddai, Joel und Benaja. |
| All these had taken strange wives; and some of them had wives by whom they had offspring. | Diese alle hatten fremde Weiber genommen; und waren etliche unter denselben Weibern, die Kinder getragen hatten. |
