| Then Job made answer and said, | Hiob antwortete und sprach: |
| Give attention with care to my words; and let this be your comfort. | Hört doch meiner Rede zu und laßt mir das anstatt eurer Tröstungen sein! |
| Let me say what is in my mind, and after that, go on making sport of me. | Vertragt mich, daß ich auch rede, und spottet darnach mein! |
| As for me, is my outcry against man? is it then to be wondered at if my spirit is troubled? | Handle ich denn mit einem Menschen? oder warum sollte ich ungeduldig sein? |
| Take note of me and be full of wonder, put your hand on your mouth. | Kehrt euch her zu mir; ihr werdet erstarren und die Hand auf den Mund legen müssen. |
| At the very thought of it my flesh is shaking with fear. | Wenn ich daran denke, so erschrecke ich, und Zittern kommt mein Fleisch an. |
| Why is life given to the evil-doers? why do they become old and strong in power? | Warum leben denn die Gottlosen, werden alt und nehmen zu an Gütern? |
| Their children are ever with them, and their offspring before their eyes. | Ihr Same ist sicher um sie her, und ihre Nachkömmlinge sind bei ihnen. |
| Their houses are free from fear, and the rod of God does not come on them. | Ihr Haus hat Frieden vor der Furcht, und Gottes Rute ist nicht über ihnen. |
| Their ox is ready at all times to give seed; their cow gives birth, without dropping her young. | Seinen Stier läßt man zu, und es mißrät ihm nicht; seine Kuh kalbt und ist nicht unfruchtbar. |
| They send out their young ones like a flock, and their children have pleasure in the dance, | Ihre jungen Kinder lassen sie ausgehen wie eine Herde, und ihre Knaben hüpfen. |
| They make songs to the instruments of music, and are glad at the sound of the pipe. | Sie jauchzen mit Pauken und Harfen und sind fröhlich mit Flöten. |
| Their days come to an end without trouble, and suddenly they go down to the underworld. | Sie werden alt bei guten Tagen und erschrecken kaum einen Augenblick vor dem Tode, |
| Though they said to God, Go away from us, for we have no desire for the knowledge of your ways. | die doch sagen zu Gott: "Hebe dich von uns, wir wollen von deinen Wegen nicht wissen! |
| What is the Ruler of all, that we may give him worship? and what profit is it to us to make prayer to him? | Wer ist der Allmächtige, daß wir ihm dienen sollten? oder was sind wir gebessert, so wir ihn anrufen?" |
| Truly, is not their well-being in their power? (The purpose of the evil-doers is far from me.) | "Aber siehe, ihr Glück steht nicht in ihren Händen; darum soll der Gottlosen Sinn ferne von mir sein." |
| How frequently is the light of the evil-doers put out, or does trouble come on them? how frequently does his wrath take them with cords? | Wie oft geschieht's denn, daß die Leuchte der Gottlosen verlischt und ihr Unglück über sie kommt? daß er Herzeleid über sie austeilt in seinem Zorn? |
| How frequently are they as dry stems before the wind, or as grass taken away by the storm-wind? | daß sie werden wie Stoppeln vor dem Winde und wie Spreu, die der Sturmwind wegführt? |
| You say, God keeps punishment stored up for his children. Let him send it on the man himself, so that he may have the punishment of it! | "Gott spart desselben Unglück auf seine Kinder". Er vergelte es ihm selbst, daß er's innewerde. |
| Let his eyes see his trouble, and let him be full of the wrath of the Ruler of all! | Seine Augen mögen sein Verderben sehen, und vom Grimm des Allmächtigen möge er trinken. |
| For what interest has he in his house after him, when the number of his months is ended? | Denn was ist ihm gelegen an seinem Hause nach ihm, wenn die Zahl seiner Monden ihm zugeteilt ist? |
| Is anyone able to give teaching to God? for he is the judge of those who are on high. | Wer will Gott lehren, der auch die Hohen richtet? |
| One comes to his end in complete well-being, full of peace and quiet: | Dieser stirbt frisch und gesund in allem Reichtum und voller Genüge, |
| His buckets are full of milk, and there is no loss of strength in his bones. | sein Melkfaß ist voll Milch, und seine Gebeine werden gemästet mit Mark; |
| And another comes to his end with a bitter soul, without ever tasting good. | jener aber stirbt mit betrübter Seele und hat nie mit Freuden gegessen; |
| Together they go down to the dust, and are covered by the worm. | und liegen gleich miteinander in der Erde, und Würmer decken sie zu. |
| See, I am conscious of your thoughts, and of your violent purposes against me; | Siehe, ich kenne eure Gedanken wohl und euer frevles Vornehmen gegen mich. |
| For you say, Where is the house of the ruler, and where is the tent of the evil-doer? | Denn ihr sprecht: "Wo ist das Haus des Fürsten? und wo ist die Hütte, da die Gottlosen wohnten?" |
| Have you not put the question to the travellers, and do you not take note of their experience? | Habt ihr denn die Wanderer nicht befragt und nicht gemerkt ihre Zeugnisse? |
| How the evil man goes free in the day of trouble, and has salvation in the day of wrath? | Denn der Böse wird erhalten am Tage des Verderbens, und am Tage des Grimms bleibt er. |
| Who will make his way clear to his face? and if he has done a thing, who gives him punishment for it? | Wer will ihm ins Angesicht sagen, was er verdient? wer will ihm vergelten, was er tut? |
| He is taken to his last resting-place, and keeps watch over it. | Und er wird zu Grabe geleitet und hält Wache auf seinem Hügel. |
| The earth of the valley covering his bones is sweet to him, and all men come after him, as there were unnumbered before him. | Süß sind ihm die Schollen des Tales, und alle Menschen ziehen ihm nach; und derer, die ihm vorangegangen sind, ist keine Zahl. |
| Why then do you give me comfort with words in which there is no profit, when you see that there is nothing in your answers but deceit? | Wie tröstet ihr mich so vergeblich, und eure Antworten finden sich unrecht! |
