| Then Eliphaz the Temanite made answer and said, | Da antwortete Eliphas von Theman und sprach: |
| Is it possible for a man to be of profit to God? No, for a man's wisdom is only of profit to himself. | Kann denn ein Mann Gottes etwas nützen? Nur sich selber nützt ein Kluger. |
| Is it of any interest to the Ruler of all that you are upright? or is it of use to him that your ways are without sin? | Meinst du, dem Allmächtigen liege daran, daß du gerecht seist? Was hilft's ihm, wenn deine Wege ohne Tadel sind? |
| Is it because you give him honour that he is sending punishment on you and is judging you? | Meinst du wegen deiner Gottesfurcht strafe er dich und gehe mit dir ins Gericht? |
| Is not your evil-doing great? and there is no end to your sins. | Nein, deine Bosheit ist zu groß, und deiner Missetaten ist kein Ende. |
| For you have taken your brother's goods when he was not in your debt, and have taken away the clothing of those who have need of it. | Du hast etwa deinem Bruder ein Pfand genommen ohne Ursache; du hast den Nackten die Kleider ausgezogen; |
| You do not give water to the tired traveller, and from him who has no food you keep back bread. | du hast die Müden nicht getränkt mit Wasser und hast dem Hungrigen dein Brot versagt; |
| For it was the man with power who had the land, and the man with an honoured name who was living in it. | du hast Gewalt im Lande geübt und prächtig darin gegessen; |
| You have sent widows away without hearing their cause, and you have taken away the support of the child who has no father. | die Witwen hast du leer lassen gehen und die Arme der Waisen zerbrochen. |
| For this cause nets are round your feet, and you are overcome with sudden fear. | Darum bist du mit Stricken umgeben, und Furcht hat dich plötzlich erschreckt. |
| Your light is made dark so that you are unable to see, and you are covered by a mass of waters. | Solltest du denn nicht die Finsternis sehen und die Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt? |
| Is not God as high as heaven? and see the stars, how high they are! | Ist nicht Gott hoch droben im Himmel? Siehe, die Sterne an droben in der Höhe! |
| And you say, What knowledge has God? is he able to give decisions through the deep dark? | Und du sprichst: "Was weiß Gott? Sollte er, was im Dunkeln ist, richten können? |
| Thick clouds are covering him, so that he is unable to see; and he is walking on the arch of heaven. | Die Wolken sind die Vordecke, und er sieht nicht; er wandelt im Umkreis des Himmels." |
| Will you keep the old way by which evil men went? | Achtest du wohl auf den Weg, darin vorzeiten die Ungerechten gegangen sind? |
| Who were violently taken away before their time, who were overcome by the rush of waters: | die vergangen sind, ehe denn es Zeit war, und das Wasser hat ihren Grund weggewaschen; |
| Who said to God, Go away from us; and, What is the Ruler of all able to do to us? | die zu Gott sprachen: "Hebe dich von uns! was sollte der Allmächtige uns tun können?" |
| Though he made their houses full of good things: but the purpose of the evil-doers is far from me! | so er doch ihr Haus mit Gütern füllte. Aber der Gottlosen Rat sei ferne von mir. |
| The upright saw it and were glad: and those who had done no wrong made sport of them, | Die Gerechten werden es sehen und sich freuen, und der Unschuldige wird ihrer spotten: |
| Saying, Truly, their substance is cut off, and their wealth is food for the fire. | "Fürwahr, unser Widersacher ist verschwunden; und sein Übriggelassenes hat das Feuer verzehrt." |
| Put yourself now in a right relation with him and be at peace: so will you do well in your undertakings. | So vertrage dich nun mit ihm und habe Frieden; daraus wird dir viel Gutes kommen. |
| Be pleased to take teaching from his mouth, and let his words be stored up in your heart. | Höre das Gesetz von seinem Munde und fasse seine Reden in dein Herz. |
| If you come back to the Ruler of all, making yourself low before him; if you put evil far away from your tents; | Wirst du dich bekehren zu dem Allmächtigen, so wirst du aufgebaut werden. Tue nur Unrecht ferne hinweg von deiner Hütte |
| And put your gold in the dust, even your gold of Ophir among the rocks of the valleys; | und wirf in den Staub dein Gold und zu den Steinen der Bäche das Ophirgold, |
| Then the Ruler of all will be your gold, and his teaching will be your silver; | so wird der Allmächtige dein Gold sein und wie Silber, das dir zugehäuft wird. |
| For then you will have delight in the Ruler of all, and your face will be lifted up to God. | Dann wirst du Lust haben an dem Allmächtigen und dein Antlitz zu Gott aufheben. |
| You will make your prayer to him, and be answered; and you will give effect to your oaths. | So wirst du ihn bitten, und er wird dich hören, und wirst dein Gelübde bezahlen. |
| Your purposes will come about, and light will be shining on your ways. | Was du wirst vornehmen, wird er dir lassen gelingen; und das Licht wird auf deinem Wege scheinen. |
| For God makes low those whose hearts are lifted up, but he is a saviour to the poor in spirit. | Denn die sich demütigen, die erhöht er; und wer seine Augen niederschlägt, der wird genesen. |
| He makes safe the man who is free from sin, and if your hands are clean, salvation will be yours. | Auch der nicht unschuldig war wird errettet werden; er wird aber errettet um deiner Hände Reinigkeit willen. |
