| Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped with cords. | Da nahm Pilatus Jesum und geißelte ihn. |
| And the men of the army made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him. | Und die Kriegsknechte flochten eine Krone von Dornen und setzten sie auf sein Haupt und legten ihm ein Purpurkleid an |
| And they kept coming and saying, Long life to the King of the Jews! And they gave him blows with their hands. | und sprachen: Sei gegrüßt, lieber Judenkönig! und gaben ihm Backenstreiche. |
| And Pilate went out again and said to them, See, I let him come out to you to make it clear to you that I see no wrong in him. | Da ging Pilatus wieder heraus und sprach zu ihnen: Sehet, ich führe ihn heraus zu euch, daß ihr erkennt, daß ich keine Schuld an ihm finde. |
| Then Jesus came out with the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Here is the man! | Also ging Jesus heraus und trug eine Dornenkrone und ein Purpurkleid. Und er spricht zu ihnen: Sehet, welch ein Mensch! |
| So when the chief priests and the police saw him they gave a loud cry, To the cross! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and put him on the cross: I see no crime in him. | Da ihn die Hohenpriester und die Diener sahen, schrieen sie und sprachen: Kreuzige! Kreuzige! Pilatus spricht zu ihnen: Nehmt ihr ihn hin und kreuzigt ihn; denn ich finde keine Schuld an ihm. |
| And the Jews made answer, We have a law, and by that law it is right for him to be put to death because he said he was the Son of God. | Die Juden antworteten ihm: Wir haben ein Gesetz, und nach dem Gesetz soll er sterben; denn er hat sich selbst zu Gottes Sohn gemacht. |
| When this saying came to Pilate's ears his fear became greater; | Da Pilatus das Wort hörte, fürchtete er sich noch mehr |
| And he went again into the Praetorium and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer. | und ging wieder hinein in das Richthaus und spricht zu Jesus: Woher bist du? Aber Jesus gab ihm keine Antwort. |
| Then Pilate said to him, You say nothing to me? is it not clear to you that I have power to let you go free and power to put you to death on the cross? | Da sprach Pilatus zu ihm: Redest du nicht mit mir? Weißt du nicht, daß ich Macht habe, dich zu kreuzigen, und Macht habe, dich loszugeben? |
| Jesus gave this answer: You would have no power at all over me if it was not given to you by God; so that he who gave me up to you has the greater sin. | Jesus antwortete: Du hättest keine Macht über mich, wenn sie dir nicht wäre von obenherab gegeben; darum, der mich dir überantwortet hat, der hat größere Sünde. |
| Hearing this, Pilate had a desire to let him go free, but the Jews said in a loud voice, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: everyone who makes himself a king goes against Caesar. | Von da an trachtete Pilatus, wie er ihn losließe. Die Juden aber schrieen und sprachen: Läßt du diesen los, so bist du des Kaisers Freund nicht; denn wer sich zum König macht, der ist wider den Kaiser. |
| So when these words came to Pilate's ear, he took Jesus out, seating himself in the judge's seat in a place named in Hebrew, Gabbatha, or the Stone Floor. | Da Pilatus das Wort hörte, führte er Jesum heraus und setzte sich auf den Richtstuhl an der Stätte, die da heißt Hochpflaster, auf hebräisch aber Gabbatha. |
| (It was the day when they made ready for the Passover; and it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, There is your King! | Es war aber der Rüsttag auf Ostern, um die sechste Stunde. Und er spricht zu den Juden: Sehet, das ist euer König! |
| Then they gave a loud cry, Away with him! away with him! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Am I to put your King to death on the cross? The chief priests said in answer, We have no king but Caesar. | Sie schrieen aber: Weg, weg mit dem! kreuzige ihn! Spricht Pilatus zu ihnen: Soll ich euren König kreuzigen? Die Hohenpriester antworteten: Wir haben keinen König denn den Kaiser. |
| So then he gave him up to them to be put to death on the cross. And they took Jesus away; | Da überantwortete er ihn, daß er gekreuzigt würde. Sie nahmen aber Jesum und führten ihn ab. |
| And he went out with his cross on him to the place which is named Dead Man's Head (in Hebrew, Golgotha): | Und er trug sein Kreuz und ging hinaus zur Stätte, die da heißt Schädelstätte, welche heißt auf hebräisch Golgatha. |
| Where they put him on the cross with two others, one on this side and one on that, and Jesus in the middle. | Allda kreuzigten sie ihn und mit ihm zwei andere zu beiden Seiten, Jesum aber mitteninne. |
| And Pilate put on the cross a statement in writing. The writing was: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. | Pilatus aber schrieb eine Überschrift und setzte sie auf das Kreuz; und war geschrieben: Jesus von Nazareth, der Juden König. |
| The writing was seen by a number of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was put to death on the cross was near the town; and the writing was in Hebrew and Latin and Greek. | Diese Überschrift lasen viele Juden; denn die Stätte war nahe bei der Stadt, da Jesus gekreuzigt ward. Und es war geschrieben in hebräischer, griechischer und lateinischer Sprache. |
| Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not put, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews. | Da sprachen die Hohenpriester der Juden zu Pilatus: Schreibe nicht: "Der Juden König", sondern daß er gesagt habe: Ich bin der Juden König. |
| But Pilate made answer, What I have put in writing will not be changed. | Pilatus antwortete: Was ich geschrieben habe, das habe ich geschrieben. |
| And when Jesus was nailed to the cross, the men of the army took his clothing, and made a division of it into four parts, to every man a part, and they took his coat: now the coat was without a join, made out of one bit of cloth. | Die Kriegsknechte aber, da sie Jesus gekreuzigt hatten, nahmen sie seine Kleider und machten vier Teile, einem jeglichen Kriegsknecht ein Teil, dazu auch den Rock. Der Rock aber war ungenäht, von obenan gewirkt durch und durch. |
| So they said among themselves, Let this not be cut up, but let us put it to the decision of chance and see who gets it. (They did this so that the Writings might come true, which say, They made a distribution of my clothing among them, and my coat they put to the decision of chance.) This was what the men of the army did. | Da sprachen sie untereinander: Laßt uns den nicht zerteilen, sondern darum losen, wes er sein soll. (Auf daß erfüllet würde die Schrift, die da sagt: "Sie haben meine Kleider unter sich geteilt und haben über meinen Rock das Los geworfen.") Solches taten die Kriegsknechte. |
| Now by the side of the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. | Es stand aber bei dem Kreuze Jesu seine Mutter und seiner Mutter Schwester, Maria, des Kleophas Weib, und Maria Magdalena. |
| So when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple who was dear to him, he said to his mother, Mother, there is your son! | Da nun Jesus seine Mutter sah und den Jünger dabeistehen, den er liebhatte, spricht er zu seiner Mutter: Weib, siehe, das ist dein Sohn! |
| Then he said to the disciple, There is your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his house. | Darnach spricht er zu dem Jünger: Siehe, das ist deine Mutter! Und von der Stunde an nahm sie der Jünger zu sich. |
| After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the Writings might come true, Jesus said, Give me water. | Darnach, da Jesus wußte, daß schon alles vollbracht war, daß die Schrift erfüllt würde, spricht er: Mich dürstet! |
| Now there was a vessel ready, full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a stick and put it to his mouth. | Da stand ein Gefäß voll Essig. Sie aber füllten einen Schwamm mit Essig und legten ihn um einen Isop und hielten es ihm dar zum Munde. |
| So when Jesus had taken the wine he said, All is done. And with his head bent he gave up his spirit. | Da nun Jesus den Essig genommen hatte, sprach er: Es ist vollbracht! und neigte das Haupt und verschied. |
| Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. | Die Juden aber, dieweil es der Rüsttag war, daß nicht die Leichname am Kreuze blieben den Sabbat über (denn desselben Sabbats Tag war groß), baten sie Pilatus, daß ihre Beine gebrochen und sie abgenommen würden. |
| So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken and then of the other who was put to death on the cross with Jesus: | Da kamen die Kriegsknechte und brachen dem ersten die Beine und dem andern, der mit ihm gekreuzigt war. |
| But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken; | Als sie aber zu Jesus kamen und sahen, daß er schon gestorben war, brachen sie ihm die Beine nicht; |
| But one of the men made a wound in his side with a spear, and straight away there came out blood and water. | sondern der Kriegsknechte einer öffnete seine Seite mit einem Speer, und alsbald ging Blut und Wasser heraus. |
| And he who saw it has given witness (and his witness is true; he is certain that what he says is true) so that you may have belief. | Und der das gesehen hat, der hat es bezeugt, und sein Zeugnis ist wahr; und dieser weiß, daß er die Wahrheit sagt, auf daß auch ihr glaubet. |
| These things came about so that the Writings might be true, No bone of his body will be broken. | Denn solches ist geschehen, daß die Schrift erfüllet würde: "Ihr sollt ihm kein Bein zerbrechen." |
| And again another verse says, They will see him who was wounded by their spears. | Und abermals spricht eine andere Schrift: "Sie werden sehen, in welchen sie gestochen haben." |
| After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, made a request to Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate said he might do so. So he went and took away his body. | Darnach bat den Pilatus Joseph von Arimathia, der ein Jünger Jesu war, doch heimlich aus Furcht vor den Juden, daß er möchte abnehmen den Leichnam Jesu. Und Pilatus erlaubte es. Da kam er und nahm den Leichnam Jesu herab. |
| And Nicodemus came (he who had first come to Jesus by night) with a roll of myrrh and aloes mixed, about a hundred pounds. | Es kam aber auch Nikodemus, der vormals in der Nacht zu Jesus gekommen war, und brachte Myrrhe und Aloe untereinander bei hundert Pfunden. |
| Then they took the body of Jesus, folding linen about it with the spices, as is the way of the Jews when they put the dead to rest. | Da nahmen sie den Leichnam Jesu und banden ihn in leinene Tücher mit den Spezereien, wie die Juden pflegen zu begraben. |
| Now there was a garden near the cross, and in the garden a new place for the dead in which no man had ever been put. | Es war aber an der Stätte, da er gekreuzigt ward, ein Garten, und im Garten ein neues Grab, in welches niemand je gelegt war. |
| So they put Jesus there, because it was the Jews' day of getting ready for the Passover, and the place was near. | Dahin legten sie Jesum um des Rüsttages willen der Juden, dieweil das Grab nahe war. |
