Deuteronomio 20
|
| When you go out to war against other nations, and come face to face with horses and war-carriages and armies greater in number than yourselves, have no fear of them: for the Lord your God is with you, who took you up out of the land of Egypt. | Quando andrai alla guerra contro i tuoi nemici e vedrai cavalli e carri e gente in maggior numero di te, non li temere, perché l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, che ti fece salire dal paese d’Egitto, è teco. |
| And when you are on the point of attacking, let the priest come forward and say to the people, | E quando sarete sul punto di dar battaglia, il sacerdote si farà avanti, parlerà al popolo |
| Give ear, O Israel: today you are going forward to the fight; let your heart be strong; do not let uncontrolled fear overcome you because of those who are against you; | e gli dirà: "Ascolta, Israele! Voi state oggi per impegnar battaglia coi vostri nemici; il vostro cuore non venga meno; non temete, non vi smarrite e non vi spaventate dinanzi a loro, |
| For the Lord your God goes with you, fighting for you to give you salvation from those who are against you. | perché l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, è colui che marcia con voi per combattere per voi contro i vostri nemici, e per salvarvi". |
| And let the overseers say to the people, If there is any man who has made for himself a new house and has not gone into it, let him go back to his house, so that in the event of his death in the fight, another may not take his house for himself. | Poi gli ufficiali parleranno al popolo, dicendo: "C’è qualcuno che abbia edificata una casa nuova e non l’abbia ancora inaugurata? Vada, torni a casa sua, onde non abbia a morire in battaglia, e un altro inauguri la casa. |
| Or if any man has made a vine-garden without taking the first-fruits of it, let him go back to his house, so that in the event of his death in the fight, another may not be the first to make use of the fruit. | C’è qualcuno che abbia piantato una vigna e non ne abbia ancora goduto il frutto? Vada, torni a casa sua, onde non abbia a morire in battaglia, e un altro ne goda il frutto. |
| Or if any man is newly married and has had no sex relations with his wife, let him go back to his house, so that in the event of his death in the fight, another man may not take her. | C’è qualcuno che si sia fidanzato con una donna e non l’abbia ancora presa? Vada, torni a casa sua, onde non abbia a morire in battaglia, e un altro se la prenda". |
| And let the overseers go on to say to the people, If there is any man whose heart is feeble with fear, let him go back to his house before he makes the hearts of his countrymen feeble. | E gli ufficiali parleranno ancora al popolo, dicendo: "C’è qualcuno che abbia paura e senta venirgli meno il cuore? Vada, torni a casa sua, onde il cuore de’ suoi fratelli non abbia ad avvilirsi come il suo". |
| Then, after saying these words to the people, let the overseers put captains over the army. | E come gli ufficiali avranno finito di parlare al popolo, costituiranno i capi delle schiere alla testa del popolo. |
| When you come to a town, before attacking it, make an offer of peace. | Quando ti avvicinerai a una città per attaccarla, le offrirai prima la pace. |
| And if it gives you back an answer of peace, opening its doors to you, then all the people in it may be put to forced work as your servants. | E se acconsente alla pace e t’apre le sue porte, tutto il popolo che vi si troverà ti sarà tributario e soggetto. |
| If however it will not make peace with you, but war, then let it be shut in on all sides: | Ma s’essa non vuol far pace teco e ti vuol far guerra, allora l’assedierai; |
| And when the Lord your God has given it into your hands, let every male in it be put to death without mercy. | e quando l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, te l’avrà data nelle mani, ne metterai a fil di spada tutti i maschi; |
| But the women and the children and the cattle and everything in the town and all its wealth, you may take for yourselves: the wealth of your haters, which the Lord your God has given you, will be your food. | ma le donne, i bambini, il bestiame e tutto ciò che sarà nella città, tutto quanto il suo bottino, te li prenderai come tua preda; e mangerai il bottino de’ tuoi nemici, che l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, t’avrà dato. |
| So you are to do to all the towns far away, which are not the towns of these nations. | Così farai per tutte le città che sono molto lontane da te, e che non sono città di queste nazioni. |
| But in the towns of these peoples whose land the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage, let no living thing be kept from death: | Ma nelle città di questi popoli che l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, ti da come eredità, non conserverai in vita nulla che respiri; |
| Give them up to the curse; the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, as the Lord your God has given you orders: | ma voterai a completo sterminio gli Hittei, gli Amorei, i Cananei, i Ferezei, gli Hivvei e i Gebusei, come l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, ti ha comandato di fare; |
| So that you may not take them as your example and do all the disgusting things which they do in the worship of their gods, so sinning against the Lord your God. | affinché essi non v’insegnino a imitare tutte le abominazioni che fanno per i loro dèi, e voi non pecchiate contro l’Eterno, ch’è il vostro Dio. |
| If in war a town is shut in by your armies for a long time, do not let its trees be cut down and made waste; for their fruit will be your food; are the trees of the countryside men for you to take up arms against them? | Quando cingerai d’assedio una città per lungo tempo, attaccandola per prenderla, non ne distruggerai gli alberi a colpi di scure; ne mangerai il frutto, ma non li abbatterai; poiché l’albero della campagna è forse un uomo che tu l’abbia ad includere nell’assedio? |
| Only those trees which you are certain are not used for food may be cut down and put to destruction: and you are to make walls of attack against the town till it is taken. | Potrai però distruggere e abbattere gli alberi che saprai non esser alberi da frutto, e ne costruirai delle opere d’assedio contro la città che fa guerra teco, finch’essa cada. |
