| A good name is better than oil of great price, and the day of death than the day of birth. | Una buona reputazione val meglio dell’olio odorifero; e il giorno della morte, meglio del giorno della nascita. |
| It is better to go to the house of weeping, than to go to the house of feasting; because that is the end of every man, and the living will take it to their hearts. | E’ meglio andare in una casa di duolo, che andare in una casa di convito; poiché là è la fine d’ogni uomo, e colui che vive vi porrà mente. |
| Sorrow is better than joy; when the face is sad the mind gets better. | La tristezza val meglio del riso; poiché quando il viso è mesto, il cuore diventa migliore. |
| The hearts of the wise are in the house of weeping; but the hearts of the foolish are in the house of joy. | Il cuore del savio è nella casa del duolo; ma il cuore degli stolti è nella casa della gioia. |
| It is better to take note of the protest of the wise, than for a man to give ear to the song of the foolish. | Meglio vale udire la riprensione del savio, che udire la canzone degli stolti. |
| Like the cracking of thorns under a pot, so is the laugh of a foolish man; and this again is to no purpose. | Poiché qual è lo scoppiettio de’ pruni sotto una pentola, tal è il riso dello stolto. Anche questo è vanità. |
| The wise are troubled by the ways of the cruel, and the giving of money is the destruction of the heart. | Certo, l’oppressione rende insensato il savio, e il dono fa perdere il senno. |
| The end of a thing is better than its start, and a gentle spirit is better than pride. | Meglio vale la fine d’una cosa, che il suo principio; e lo spirito paziente val meglio dello spirito altero. |
| Be not quick to let your spirit be angry; because wrath is in the heart of the foolish. | Non t’affrettare a irritarti nello spirito tuo, perché l’irritazione riposa in seno agli stolti. |
| Say not, Why were the days which have gone by better than these? Such a question comes not from wisdom. | Non dire: "Come mai i giorni di prima eran migliori di questi?" poiché non è per sapienza che tu chiederesti questo. |
| Wisdom together with a heritage is good, and a profit to those who see the sun. | La sapienza è buona quanto un’eredità, e anche di più, per quelli che vedono il sole. |
| Wisdom keeps a man from danger even as money does; but the value of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to its owner. | Poiché la sapienza offre un riparo, come l’offre il danaro; ma l’eccellenza della scienza sta in questo, che la sapienza fa vivere quelli che la possiedono. |
| Give thought to the work of God. Who will make straight what he has made bent? | Considera l’opera di Dio; chi potrà raddrizzare ciò che egli ha ricurvo? |
| In the day of wealth have joy, but in the day of evil take thought: God has put the one against the other, so that man may not be certain what will be after him. | Nel giorno della prosperità godi del bene, e nel giorno dell’avversità rifletti. Dio ha fatto l’uno come l’altro, affinché l’uomo non scopra nulla di ciò che sarà dopo di lui. |
| These two have I seen in my life which is to no purpose: a good man coming to his end in his righteousness, and an evil man whose days are long in his evil-doing. | Io ho veduto tutto questo nei giorni della mia vanità. V’è tal giusto che perisce per la sua giustizia, e v’è tal empio che prolunga la sua vita con la sua malvagità. |
| Be not given overmuch to righteousness and be not over-wise. Why let destruction come on you? | Non esser troppo giusto, e non ti far savio oltremisura; perché ti distruggeresti? |
| Be not evil overmuch, and be not foolish. Why come to your end before your time? | Non esser troppo empio, né essere stolto; perché morresti tu prima del tempo? |
| It is good to take this in your hand and not to keep your hand from that; he who has the fear of God will be free of the two. | E’ bene che tu t’attenga fermamente a questo, e che tu non ritragga la mano da quello; poiché chi teme Iddio evita tutte queste cose. |
| Wisdom makes a wise man stronger than ten rulers in a town. | La sapienza dà al savio più forza che non facciano dieci capi in una città. |
| There is no man on earth of such righteousness that he does good and is free from sin all his days. | Certo, non v’è sulla terra alcun uomo giusto che faccia il bene e non pecchi mai. |
| Do not give ear to all the words which men say, for fear of hearing the curses of your servant. | Non porre dunque mente a tutte le parole che si dicono, per non sentirti maledire dal tuo servo; |
| Your heart has knowledge how frequently others have been cursed by you. | poiché il tuo cuore sa che sovente anche tu hai maledetto altri. |
| All this I have put to the test by wisdom; I said, I will be wise, but it was far from me. | Io ho esaminato tutto questo con sapienza. Ho detto: "Voglio acquistare sapienza"; ma la sapienza è rimasta lungi da me. |
| Far off is true existence, and very deep; who may have knowledge of it? | Una cosa ch’è tanto lontana e tanto profonda chi la potrà trovare? |
| I gave my mind to knowledge and to searching for wisdom and the reason of things, and to the discovery that sin is foolish, and that to be foolish is to be without one's senses. | Io mi sono applicato nel cuor mio a riflettere, a investigare, a cercare la sapienza e la ragion delle cose, e a riconoscere che l’empietà è una follia e la stoltezza una pazzia; |
| And I saw a thing more bitter than death, even the woman whose heart is full of tricks and nets, and whose hands are as bands. He with whom God is pleased will get free from her, but the sinner will be taken by her. | e ho trovato una cosa più amara della morte: la donna ch’è tutta tranelli, il cui cuore non è altro che reti, e le cui mani sono catene; colui ch’è gradito a Dio le sfugge, ma il peccatore riman preso da lei. |
| Look! this I have seen, said the Preacher, taking one thing after another to get the true account, | Ecco, questo ho trovato, dice l’Ecclesiaste, dopo aver esaminato le cose una ad una per afferrarne la ragione; |
| For which my soul is still searching, but I have it not; one man among a thousand have I seen; but a woman among all these I have not seen. | ecco quello che l’anima mia cerca ancora, senza ch’io l’abbia trovato: un uomo fra mille, l’ho trovato, ma una donna fra tutte, non l’ho trovata. |
| This only have I seen, that God made men upright, but they have been searching out all sorts of inventions. | Questo soltanto ho trovato: che Dio ha fatto l’uomo retto, ma gli uomini hanno cercato molti sotterfugi. |
