| And at nightfall the two angels came to Sodom; and Lot was seated at the way into the town: and when he saw them he got up and came before them, falling down on his face to the earth. | Or i due angeli giunsero a Sodoma verso sera; e Lot stava sedendo alla porta di Sodoma; e, come li vide, s’alzò per andar loro incontro e si prostrò con la faccia a terra, e disse: |
| And he said, My masters, come now into your servant's house and take your rest there for the night, and let your feet be washed; and early in the morning you may go on your way. And they said, Not so, but we will take our night's rest in the street. | "Signori miei, vi prego, venite in casa del vostro servo, albergatevi questa notte, e lavatevi i piedi; poi domattina vi leverete per tempo e continuerete il vostro cammino". Ed essi risposero: "No; passeremo la notte sulla piazza". |
| But he made his request more strongly, so they went with him into his house; and he got food ready for them, and made unleavened bread, of which they took. | Ma egli fe’ loro tanta premura, che vennero da lui ed entrarono in casa sua. Ed egli fece loro un convito, cosse dei pani senza lievito, ed essi mangiarono. |
| But before they had gone to bed, the men of the town, all the men of Sodom, came round the house, young and old, from every part of the town; | Ma prima che si fossero coricati, gli uomini della città, i Sodomiti, circondarono la casa: giovani e vecchi, la popolazione intera venuta da ogni lato; e chiamarono Lot, e gli dissero: |
| And crying out to Lot, they said, Where are the men who came to your house this night? Send them out to us, so that we may take our pleasure with them. | "Dove sono quegli uomini che son venuti da te stanotte? Menaceli fuori, affinché noi li conosciamo!" |
| And Lot went out to them in the doorway, shutting the door after him. | Lot uscì verso di loro sull’ingresso di casa, si chiuse dietro la porta, e disse: |
| And he said, My brothers, do not this evil. | "Deh, fratelli miei, non fate questo male! |
| See now, I have two unmarried daughters; I will send them out to you so that you may do to them whatever seems good to you: only do nothing to these men, for this is why they have come under the shade of my roof. | Ecco, ho due figliuole che non hanno conosciuto uomo; deh, lasciate ch’io ve le meni fuori, e voi fate di loro quel che vi piacerà; soltanto non fate nulla a questi uomini, poiché son venuti all’ombra del mio tetto". |
| And they said, Give way there. This one man, they said, came here from a strange country, and will he now be our judge? now we will do worse to you than to them; and pushing violently against Lot, they came near to get the door broken in. | Ma essi gli dissero: "Fatti in là!" E ancora: "Quest’individuo è venuto qua come straniero, e la vuol far da giudice! Ora faremo a te peggio che a quelli!" E, premendo Lot con violenza, s’avvicinarono per sfondare la porta. |
| But the men put out their hands and took Lot into the house to them, shutting the door again. | Ma quegli uomini stesero la mano, trassero Lot in casa con loro, e chiusero la porta. |
| But the men who were outside the door they made blind, all of them, small and great, so that they were tired out with looking for the door. | E colpirono di cecità la gente ch’era alla porta della casa, dal più piccolo al più grande, talché si stancarono a cercar la porta. |
| Then the men said to Lot, Are there any others of your family here? sons-in-law or sons or daughters, take them all out of this place; | E quegli uomini dissero a Lot: "Chi hai tu ancora qui? fa’ uscire da questo luogo generi, figliuoli, figliuole e chiunque de’ tuoi è in questa città; |
| For we are about to send destruction on this place, because a great outcry against them has come to the ears of the Lord; and the Lord has sent us to put an end to the town. | poiché noi distruggeremo questo luogo, perché il grido contro i suoi abitanti è grande nel cospetto dell’Eterno, e l’Eterno ci ha mandati a distruggerlo". |
| And Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were married to his daughters, Come, let us go out of this place, for the Lord is about to send destruction on the town. But his sons-in-law did not take him seriously. | Allora Lot usci, parlò ai suoi generi che avevano preso le sue figliuole, e disse: "Levatevi, uscite da questo luogo, perché l’Eterno sta per distruggere la città". Ma ai i generi parve che volesse scherzare. |
| And when morning came, the angels did all in their power to make Lot go, saying, Get up quickly and take your wife and your two daughters who are here, and go, for fear that you come to destruction in the punishment of the town. | E come l’alba cominciò ad apparire, gli angeli sollecitarono Lot, dicendo: "Lèvati, prendi tua moglie e le tue due figliuole che si trovan qui, affinché tu non perisca nel castigo di questa città". |
| But while he was waiting, the men took him and his wife and his daughters by the hand, for the Lord had mercy on them, and put them outside the town. | Ma egli s’indugiava; e quegli uomini presero per la mano lui, sua moglie e le sue due figliuole, perché l’Eterno lo volea risparmiare; e lo menaron via, e lo misero fuori della città. |
| And when they had put them out, he said, Go for your life, without looking back or waiting in the lowland; go quickly to the mountain or you will come to destruction. | E avvenne che quando li ebbero fatti uscire, uno di quegli uomini disse: "Sàlvati la vita! non guardare indietro, e non ti fermare in alcun luogo della pianura; sàlvati al monte, che tu non abbia a perire!" |
| And Lot said to them, Not so, O my Lord; | E Lot rispose loro: "No, mio signore! |
| See now, your servant has had grace in your eyes and great is your mercy in keeping my life from destruction, but I am not able to get as far as the mountain before evil overtakes me and death; | ecco, il tuo servo ha trovato grazia agli occhi tuoi, e tu hai mostrato la grandezza della tua bontà verso di me conservandomi in vita; ma io non posso salvarmi al monte prima che il disastro mi sopraggiunga, ed io perisca. |
| This town, now, is near, and it is a little one: O, let me go there (is it not a little one?) so that my life may be safe. | Ecco, questa città è vicina da potermici rifugiare, ed è piccola. Deh, lascia ch’io scampi quivi non è essa piccola? e vivrà l’anima mia!" |
| And he said, See, I have given you your request in this one thing more: I will not send destruction on this town. | E quegli a lui: "Ecco, anche questa grazia io ti concedo: di non distruggere la città, della quale hai parlato. |
| Go there quickly, for I am not able to do anything till you have come there. For this reason, the town was named Zoar. | Affrettati, scampa colà, poiché io non posso far nulla finché tu vi sia giunto". Perciò quella città fu chiamata Tsoar. |
| The sun was up when Lot came to Zoar. | Il sole si levava sulla terra quando Lot arrivò a Tsoar. |
| Then the Lord sent fire and flaming smoke raining down from heaven on Sodom and Gomorrah. | Allora l’Eterno fece piovere dai cieli su Sodoma e Gomorra zolfo e fuoco, da parte dell’Eterno; |
| And he sent destruction on those towns, with all the lowland and all the people of those towns and every green thing in the land. | ed egli distrusse quelle città e tutta la pianura e tutti gli abitanti delle città e quanto cresceva sul suolo. |
| But Lot's wife, looking back, became a pillar of salt. | Ma la moglie di Lot si volse a guardare indietro, e diventò una statua di sale. |
| And Abraham got up early in the morning and went to the place where he had been talking with the Lord: | E Abrahamo si levò la mattina a buon’ora, e andò al luogo dove s’era prima fermato davanti all’Eterno; |
| And looking in the direction of Sodom and Gomorrah and the lowland, he saw the smoke of the land going up like the smoke of an oven. | guardò verso Sodoma e Gomorra e verso tutta la regione della pianura, ed ecco vide un fumo che si levava dalla terra, come il fumo d’una fornace. |
| So it came about that when God sent destruction on the towns of the lowland, he kept his word to Abraham, and sent Lot safely away when he put an end to the towns where he was living. | Così avvenne che, quando Iddio distrusse le città della pianura, egli si ricordò d’Abrahamo, e fece partir Lot di mezzo al disastro, allorché sovvertì le città dove Lot avea dimorato. |
| Then Lot went up out of Zoar to the mountain, and was living there with his two daughters, for fear kept him from living in Zoar: and he and his daughters made their living-place in a hole in the rock. | Lot salì da Tsoar e dimorò sul monte insieme con le sue due figliuole, perché temeva di stare in Tsoar; e dimorò in una spelonca, egli con le sue due figliuole. |
| And the older daughter said to her sister, Our father is old, and there is no man to be a husband to us in the natural way: | E la maggiore disse alla minore: "Nostro padre è vecchio, e non c’è più nessuno sulla terra per venire da noi, come si costuma in tutta la terra. |
| Come, let us give our father much wine, and we will go into his bed, so that we may have offspring by our father, | Vieni, diamo a bere del vino a nostro padre, e giaciamoci con lui, affinché possiamo conservare la razza di nostro padre". |
| And that night they made their father take much wine; and the older daughter went into his bed; and he had no knowledge of when she went in or when she went away. | E quella stessa notte dettero a bere del vino al loro padre; e la maggiore entrò e si giacque con suo padre; ed egli non s’accorse né quando essa si coricò né quando si levò. |
| And on the day after, the older daughter said to the younger, Last night I was with my father; let us make him take much wine this night again, and do you go to him, so that we may have offspring by our father. | E avvenne che il dì seguente, la maggiore disse alla minore: "Ecco, la notte passata io mi giacqui con mio padre; diamogli a bere del vino anche questa notte; e tu entra, e giaciti con lui, affinché possiamo conservare la razza di nostro padre". |
| And that night again they made their father take much wine; and the younger daughter went into his bed; and he had no knowledge of when she went in or when she went away. | E anche quella notte dettero a bere del vino al padre loro, e la minore andò a giacersi con lui; ed egli non s’accorse né quando essa si coricò né quando si levò. |
| And so the two daughters of Lot were with child by their father. | Così le due figliuole di Lot rimasero incinte del loro padre. |
| And the older daughter had a son, and she gave him the name Moab: he is the father of the Moabites to this day. | E la maggiore partorì un figliuolo, al quale pose nome Moab. Questi è il padre dei Moabiti, che sussistono fino al di d’oggi. |
| And the younger had a son and gave him the name Ben-ammi: from him come the children of Ammon to this day. | E la minore partorì anch’essa un figliuolo, al quale pose nome Ben-Ammi. Questi è il padre degli Ammoniti, che sussistono fino al dì d’oggi. |
