| Now after these things, word came to Joseph that his father was ill: and he took with him his sons Manasseh and Ephraim. | Dopo queste cose, avvenne che fu detto a Giuseppe: "Ecco, tuo padre è ammalato". Ed egli prese seco i suoi due figliuoli, Manasse ed Efraim. |
| And when they said to Jacob, Your son Joseph is coming to see you: then Israel, getting all his strength together, had himself lifted up in his bed. | Giacobbe ne fu informato, e gli fu detto: "Ecco, il tuo figliuolo Giuseppe viene da te". E Israele raccolse le sue forze, e si mise a sedere sul letto. |
| And Jacob said to Joseph, God, the Ruler of all, came to me in a vision at Luz in the land of Canaan, and gave me his blessing, | E Giacobbe disse a Giuseppe: "L’Iddio onnipotente mi apparve a Luz nel paese di Canaan, mi benedisse, |
| And said to me, Truly, I will make you fertile and give you increase and will make of you a great family of nations: and I will give this land to your seed after you to be their heritage for ever. | e mi disse: Ecco, io ti farò fruttare, ti moltiplicherò, ti farò diventare una moltitudine di popoli, e darò questo paese alla tua progenie dopo di te, come un possesso perpetuo. |
| And now your two sons who came to birth in Egypt before I came to you here, are mine; Ephraim and Manasseh will be mine, in the same way as Reuben and Simeon are. | E ora, i tuoi due figliuoli che ti son nati nel paese d’Egitto prima ch’io venissi da te in Egitto, sono miei. Efraim e Manasse saranno miei, come Ruben e Simeone. |
| And any other offspring which you have after them, will be yours, and will be named after their brothers in their heritage. | Ma i figliuoli che hai generati dopo di loro, saranno tuoi; essi saranno chiamati col nome dei loro fratelli, quanto alla loro eredità. |
| And as for me, when I came from Paddan, death overtook Rachel on the way, when we were still some distance from Ephrath; and I put her to rest there on the road to Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem. | Quanto a me, allorché tornavo da Paddan, Rachele morì presso di me, nel paese di Canaan, durante il viaggio, a qualche distanza da Efrata; e la seppellii quivi, sulla via di Efrata, che è Bethlehem". |
| Then Israel, looking at Joseph's sons, said, Who are these? | Israele guardò i figliuoli di Giuseppe, e disse: "Questi, chi sono?" |
| And Joseph said to his father, They are my sons, whom God has given me in this land. And he said, Let them come near me, and I will give them a blessing. | E Giuseppe rispose a suo padre: "Sono miei figliuoli, che Dio mi ha dati qui". Ed egli disse: "Deh, fa’ che si appressino a me, e io li benedirò". |
| Now because Israel was old, his eyes were no longer clear, and he was not able to see. So he made them come near to him, and he gave them a kiss, folding them in his arms. | Or gli occhi d’Israele erano annebbiati a motivo dell’età, sì che non ci vedeva più. E Giuseppe li fece avvicinare a lui, ed egli li baciò e li abbracciò. |
| And Israel said to Joseph, I had no hope of seeing your face again, but God in his mercy has let me see you and your children. | E Israele disse a Giuseppe: "Io non pensavo di riveder più la tua faccia; ed ecco che Iddio m’ha dato di vedere anche la tua progenie". |
| Then Joseph took them from between his knees, and went down on his face to the earth. | Giuseppe li ritirò di tra le ginocchia di suo padre, e si prostrò con la faccia a terra. |
| Then taking Ephraim with his right hand, Joseph put him at Israel's left side, and with his left hand he put Manasseh at Israel's right side, placing them near him. | Poi Giuseppe li prese ambedue: Efraim alla sua destra, alla sinistra d’Israele; e Manasse alla sua sinistra, alla destra d’Israele; e li fece avvicinare a lui. |
| And Israel, stretching out his right hand, put it on the head of Ephraim, the younger, and his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands on purpose, for Manasseh was the older. | E Israele stese la sua man destra, e la posò sul capo di Efraim ch’era il più giovane; e posò la sua mano sinistra sul capo di Manasse, incrociando le mani; poiché Manasse era il primogenito. |
| And he gave Joseph a blessing, saying, May the God to whom my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, gave worship, the God who has taken care of me all my life till this day, | E benedisse Giuseppe, e disse: "L’Iddio, nel cui cospetto camminarono i miei padri Abrahamo e Isacco, l’Iddio ch’è stato il mio pastore dacché esisto fino a questo giorno, |
| The angel who has been my saviour from all evil, send his blessing on these children: and let my name and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, be given to them; and let them become a great nation in the earth. | l’angelo che mi ha liberato da ogni male, benedica questi fanciulli! Siano chiamati col mio nome e col nome de’ miei padri Abrahamo ed Isacco, e moltiplichino copiosamente sulla terra!" |
| Now when Joseph saw that his father had put his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it did not seem right to him; and lifting his father's hand he would have put it on the head of Manasseh. | Or quando Giuseppe vide che suo padre posava la man destra sul capo di Efraim, n’ebbe dispiacere, e prese la mano di suo padre per levarla di sul capo di Efraim e metterla sul capo di Manasse. |
| And Joseph said to his father, Not so, my father, for this is the older; put your right hand on his head. | E Giuseppe disse a suo padre: "Non così, padre mio; perché questo è il primogenito; metti la tua man destra sul suo capo". |
| But his father would not, saying, I am doing it on purpose, my son; he will certainly become a nation and a great one; but his younger brother will be greater than he, and his seed will become a great family of nations. | Ma suo padre ricusò e disse: "Lo so, figliuol mio, lo so; anch’egli diventerà un popolo, e anch’egli sarà grande; nondimeno, il suo fratello più giovane sarà più grande di lui, e la sua progenie diventerà una moltitudine di nazioni". |
| So he gave them his blessing that day, saying, You will be the sign of blessing in Israel, for they will say, May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh; and he put Ephraim before Manasseh. | E in quel giorno li benedisse, dicendo: "Per te Israele benedirà, dicendo: Iddio ti faccia simile ad Efraim ed a Manasse!" E mise Efraim prima di Manasse. |
| Then Israel said to Joseph, Now my death is near; but God will be with you, guiding you back to the land of your fathers. | Poi Israele disse a Giuseppe: "Ecco, io mi muoio; ma Dio sarà con voi, e vi ricondurrà nel paese dei vostri padri. |
| And I have given you more than your brothers, even Shechem as your heritage, which I took from the Amorites with my sword and my bow. | E io ti do una parte di più che ai tuoi fratelli: quella che conquistai dalle mani degli Amorei, con la mia spada e col mio arco". |
