| And Jacob sent for his sons, and said, Come together, all of you, so that I may give you news of your fate in future times. | Poi Giacobbe chiamò i suoi figliuoli, e disse: "Adunatevi, e vi annunzierò ciò che vi avverrà ne’ giorni a venire. |
| Come near, O sons of Jacob, and give ear to the words of Israel your father. | Adunatevi e ascoltate, o figliuoli di Giacobbe! Date ascolto a Israele, vostro padre! |
| Reuben, you are my oldest son, the first-fruit of my strength, first in pride and first in power: | Ruben, tu sei il mio primogenito, la mia forza, la primizia del mio vigore, eminente in dignità ed eminente in forza. |
| But because you were uncontrolled, the first place will not be yours; for you went up to your father's bed, even his bride-bed, and made it unclean. | Impetuoso come l’acqua, tu non avrai la preeminenza, perché sei salito sul letto di tuo padre. Allora tu l’hai profanato. Egli è salito sul mio letto. |
| Simeon and Levi are brothers; deceit and force are their secret designs. | Simeone e Levi sono fratelli: le loro spade sono strumenti di violenza. |
| Take no part in their secrets, O my soul; keep far away, O my heart, from their meetings; for in their wrath they put men to death, and for their pleasure even oxen were wounded. | Non entri l’anima mia nel loro consiglio segreto, non si unisca la mia gloria alla loro raunanza! Poiché nella loro ira hanno ucciso degli uomini, e nel loro mal animo han tagliato i garetti ai tori. |
| A curse on their passion for it was bitter; and on their wrath for it was cruel. I will let their heritage in Jacob be broken up, driving them from their places in Israel. | Maledetta l’ira loro, perch’è stata violenta, e il loro furore perch’è stato crudele! Io li dividerò in Giacobbe, e li disperderò in Israele. |
| To you, Judah, will your brothers give praise: your hand will be on the neck of your haters; your father's sons will go down to the earth before you. | Giuda, te loderanno i tuoi fratelli; la tua mano sarà sulla cervice de’ tuoi nemici; i figliuoli di tuo padre si prostreranno dinanzi a te. |
| Judah is a young lion; like a lion full of meat you have become great, my son; now he takes his rest like a lion stretched out and like an old lion; by whom will his sleep be broken? | Giuda è un giovine leone; tu risali dalla preda, figliuol mio; egli si china, s’accovaccia come un leone, come una leonessa: chi lo farà levare? |
| The rod of authority will not be taken from Judah, and he will not be without a law-giver, till he comes who has the right to it, and the peoples will put themselves under his rule. | Lo scettro non sarà rimosso da Giuda, né il bastone del comando di fra i suoi piedi, finché venga Colui che darà il riposo, e al quale ubbidiranno i popoli. |
| Knotting his ass's cord to the vine, and his young ass to the best vine; washing his robe in wine, and his clothing in the blood of grapes: | Egli lega il suo asinello alla vite, e il puledro della sua asina, alla vite migliore; lava la sua veste col vino, e il suo manto col sangue dell’uva. |
| His eyes will be dark with wine, and his teeth white with milk. | Egli ha gli occhi rossi dal vino, e i denti bianchi dal latte. |
| The resting-place of Zebulun will be by the sea, and he will be a harbour for ships; the edge of his land will be by Zidon. | Zabulon abiterà sulla costa dei mari; sarà sulla costa ove convengon le navi, e il suo fianco s’appoggerà a Sidon. |
| Issachar is a strong ass stretched out among the flocks: | Issacar è un asino robusto, sdraiato fra i tramezzi del chiuso. |
| And he saw that rest was good and the land was pleasing; so he let them put weights on his back and became a servant. | Egli ha visto che il riposo è buono, e che il paese è ameno; ha curvato la spalla per portare il peso, ed è divenuto un servo forzato al lavoro. |
| Dan will be the judge of his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. | Dan giudicherà il suo popolo, come una delle tribù d’Israele. |
| May Dan be a snake in the way, a horned snake by the road, biting the horse's foot so that the horseman has a fall. | Dan sarà una serpe sulla strada, una cerasta sul sentiero, che morde i talloni del cavallo, sì che il cavaliere cade all’indietro. |
| I have been waiting for your salvation, O Lord. | Io ho aspettato la tua salvezza, o Eterno! |
| Gad, an army will come against him, but he will come down on them in their flight. | Gad, l’assaliranno delle bande armate, ma egli a sua volta le assalirà, e le inseguirà. |
| Asher's bread is fat; he gives delicate food for kings. | Da Ascer verrà il pane saporito, ed ei fornirà delizie reali. |
| Naphtali is a roe let loose, giving fair young ones. | Neftali è una cerva messa in libertà; egli dice delle belle parole. |
| Joseph is a young ox, whose steps are turned to the fountain; | Giuseppe e un ramo d’albero fruttifero; un ramo d’albero fruttifero vicino a una sorgente; i suoi rami si stendono sopra il muro. |
| He was troubled by the archers; they sent out their arrows against him, cruelly wounding him: | Gli arcieri l’hanno provocato, gli han lanciato dei dardi, l’hanno perseguitato; |
| But their bows were broken by a strong one, and the cords of their arms were cut by the Strength of Jacob, by the name of the Stone of Israel: | ma l’arco suo è rimasto saldo; le sue braccia e le sue mani sono state rinforzate dalle mani del Potente di Giacobbe, da colui ch’è il pastore e la roccia d’Israele, |
| Even by the God of your father, who will be your help, and by the Ruler of all, who will make you full with blessings from heaven on high, blessings of the deep stretched out under the earth, blessings of the breasts and of the fertile body: | dall’Iddio di tuo padre che t’aiuterà, e dall’Altissimo che ti benedirà con benedizioni del cielo di sopra, con benedizioni dell’abisso che giace di sotto, con benedizioni delle mammelle e del seno materno. |
| Blessings of sons, old and young, to the father: blessings of the oldest mountains and the fruit of the eternal hills: let them come on the head of Joseph, on the crown of him who was separate from his brothers. | Le benedizioni di tuo padre sorpassano le benedizioni dei miei progenitori, fino a raggiunger la cima delle colline eterne. Esse saranno sul capo di Giuseppe, sulla fronte del principe de’ suoi fratelli. |
| Benjamin is a wolf, searching for meat: in the morning he takes his food, and in the evening he makes division of what he has taken. | Beniamino è un lupo rapace; la mattina divora la preda, e la sera spartisce le spoglie". |
| These are the twelve tribes of Israel: and these are the words their father said to them, blessing them; to every one he gave his blessing. | Tutti costoro sono gli antenati delle dodici tribù d’Israele; e questo è quello che il loro padre disse loro, quando li benedisse. Li benedisse, dando a ciascuno la sua benedizione particolare. |
| And he gave orders to them, saying, Put me to rest with my people and with my fathers, in the hollow of the rock in the field of Ephron the Hittite, | Poi dette loro i suoi ordini, e disse: "Io sto per essere riunito al mio popolo; seppellitemi coi miei padri nella spelonca ch’è nel campo di Efron lo Hitteo, |
| In the rock in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham got from Ephron the Hittite, to be his resting-place. | nella spelonca ch’è nel campo di Macpela, dirimpetto a Mamre, nel paese di Canaan, la quale Abrahamo comprò, col campo, da Efron lo Hitteo, come sepolcro di sua proprietà. |
| There Abraham and Sarah his wife were put to rest, and there they put Isaac and Rebekah his wife, and there I put Leah to rest. | Quivi furon sepolti Abrahamo e Sara sua moglie; quivi furon sepolti Isacco e Rebecca sua moglie, e quivi io seppellii Lea. |
| In the rock in the field which was got for a price from the people of Heth. | Il campo e la spelonca che vi si trova, furon comprati dai figliuoli di Heth". |
| And when Jacob had come to the end of these words to his sons, stretching himself on his bed, he gave up his spirit, and went the way of his people. | Quando Giacobbe ebbe finito di dare questi ordini ai suoi figliuoli, ritirò i piedi entrò il letto, e spirò, e fu riunito al suo popolo. |
