| This is what the Lord said to me: Go and get yourself a linen band and put it round you and do not put it in water. | Così mi ha detto l’Eterno: "Va’, còmprati una cintura di lino, mettitela sui fianchi, ma non la porre nell’acqua". |
| So, as the Lord said, I got a band for a price and put it round my body. | Così io comprai la cintura, secondo la parola dell’Eterno, e me la misi sui fianchi. |
| And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, | E la parola dell’Eterno mi fu indirizzata per la seconda volta, in questi termini: |
| Take the band which you got for a price, which is round your body, and go to Parah and put it in a secret place there in a hole of the rock. | "Prendi la cintura che hai comprata e che hai sui fianchi; va’ verso l’Eufrate, e quivi nascondila nella fessura d’una roccia". |
| So I went and put it in a secret place by Parah, as the Lord had said to me. | E io andai, e la nascosi presso l’Eufrate, come l’Eterno mi aveva comandato. |
| Then after a long time, the Lord said to me, Up! go to Parah and get the band which I gave you orders to put there. | Dopo molti giorni l’Eterno mi disse: "Lèvati, va’ verso l’Eufrate, e togli di là la cintura, che io t’avevo comandato di nascondervi". |
| So I went to Parah and, uncovering the hole, took the band from the place where I had put it away: and the band was damaged and of no use for anything. | E io andai verso l’Eufrate, e scavai, e tolsi la cintura dal luogo dove l’avevo nascosta; ed ecco, la cintura era guasta, e non era più buona a nulla. |
| Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, | Allora la parola dell’Eterno mi fu rivolta in questi termini: |
| The Lord has said, In this way I will do damage to the pride of Judah and to the great pride of Jerusalem. | Così parla l’Eterno: "In questo modo io distruggerò l’orgoglio di Giuda e il grande orgoglio di Gerusalemme, |
| These evil people who say they will not give ear to my words, who go on in the pride of their hearts and have become servants and worshippers of other gods, will become like this band which is of no use for anything. | di questo popolo malvagio che ricusa di ascoltare le mie parole, che cammina seguendo la caparbietà del suo cuore, e va dietro ad altri dèi per servirli e per prostrarsi dinanzi a loro; esso diventerà come questa cintura, che non è più buona a nulla. |
| For as a band goes tightly round a man's body, so I made all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah tightly united to me; so that they might be a people for me and a name and a praise and a glory: but they would not give ear. | Poiché, come la cintura aderisce ai fianchi dell’uomo, così io avevo strettamente unita a me tutta la casa d’Israele e tutta la casa di Giuda, dice l’Eterno, perché fossero mio popolo, mia fama, mia lode, mia gloria; ma essi non han voluto dare ascolto. |
| So you are to say this word to them: This is the word of the Lord, the God of Israel: Every skin bottle will be full of wine; and they will say to you, Is it not quite clear to us that every skin bottle will be full of wine? | Tu dirai dunque loro questa parola: Così parla l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele: "Ogni vaso sarà riempito di vino"; e quando essi ti diranno: "Non lo sappiamo noi che ogni vaso si riempie di vino?" |
| Then you are to say to them, The Lord has said, I will make all the people of this land, even the kings seated on David's seat, and the priests and the prophets and all the people of Jerusalem, overcome with strong drink. | Allora tu di’ loro: Così parla l’Eterno: Ecco, io empirò d’ebbrezza tutti gli abitanti di questo paese, i re che seggono sul trono di Davide, i sacerdoti, i profeti, e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme. |
| I will have them smashed against one another, fathers and sons together, says the Lord: I will have no pity or mercy, I will have no feeling for them to keep me from giving them to destruction. | Li sbatterò l’uno contro l’altro, padri e figli assieme, dice l’Eterno; io non risparmierò alcuno; nessuna pietà, nessuna compassione m’impedirà di distruggerli. |
| Give ear and let your ears be open; be not lifted up: for these are the words of the Lord. | Ascoltate, porgete orecchio! non insuperbite, perché l’Eterno parla. |
| Give glory to the Lord your God, before he makes it dark, and before your feet are slipping on the dark mountains, and, while you are looking for a light, he makes it into deep dark, into black night. | Date gloria all’Eterno, al vostro Dio, prima ch’ei faccia venir le tenebre, e prima che i vostri piedi inciampino sui monti avvolti nel crepuscolo, e voi aspettiate la luce ed egli ne faccia un’ombra di morte, e la muti in oscurità profonda. |
| But if you do not give ear to it, my soul will be weeping in secret for your pride; my eye will be weeping bitterly, streaming with water, because the Lord's flock has been taken away as prisoners. | Ma se voi non date ascolto, l’anima mia piangerà in segreto, a motivo del vostro orgoglio, gli occhi miei piangeranno dirottamente, si scioglieranno in lacrime, perché il gregge dell’Eterno sarà menato in cattività. |
| Say to the king and to the queen-mother, Make yourselves low, be seated on the earth: for the crown of your glory has come down from your heads. | Di’ al re e alla regina: "Sedetevi in terra! perché la vostra gloriosa corona vi cade di testa". |
| The towns of the south are shut up, and there is no one to make them open: Judah is taken away as prisoners; all Judah is taken away as prisoners. | Le città del mezzogiorno sono chiuse, e non v’è più chi le apra; tutto Giuda è menato in cattività, è menato in esilio tutto quanto. |
| Let your eyes be lifted up (O Jerusalem), and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock which was given to you, your beautiful flock? | Alzate gli occhi, e guardate quelli che vengono dal settentrione; dov’è il gregge, il magnifico gregge, che t’era stato dato? |
| What will you say when he puts over you those whom you yourself have made your friends? will not pains take you like a woman in childbirth? | Che dirai tu quand’Egli ti punirà? Ma tu stessa hai insegnato ai tuoi amici a dominar su te. Non ti piglieranno i dolori, come piglian la donna che sta per partorire? |
| And if you say in your heart, Why have these things come on me? because of the number of your sins, your skirts have been uncovered and violent punishment overtakes you. | E se tu dici in cuor tuo: "Perché m’avvengon queste cose?" Per la grandezza della tua iniquità i lembi della tua veste ti son rimboccati, e i tuoi calcagni sono violentemente scoperti. |
| Is it possible for the skin of the Ethiopian to be changed, or the markings on the leopard? Then it might be possible for you to do good, who have been trained to do evil. | Un moro può egli mutar la sua pelle o un leopardo le sue macchie? Allora anche voi, abituati come siete a fare il male, potrete fare il bene? |
| So I will send them in all directions, as dry grass is taken away by the wind of the waste land. | E io li disperderò, come stoppia portata via dal vento del deserto. |
| This is your fate, the part measured out to you by me, says the Lord, because you have put me out of your memory and put your faith in what is false. | E’ questa la tua sorte, la parte ch’io ti misuro, dice l’Eterno, perché tu m’hai dimenticato, e hai riposto la tua fiducia nella menzogna. |
| So I will have your skirts uncovered before your face, in order that your shame may be seen. | E io pure ti rovescerò i lembi della veste sul viso, sì che si vegga la tua vergogna. |
| I have seen your disgusting acts, even your false behaviour and your cries of desire and your loose ways on the hills in the field. Unhappy are you, O Jerusalem, you have no desire to be made clean; how long will you be in turning back to me? | Io ho visto le tue abominazioni, i tuoi adulteri, i tuoi nitriti, l’infamia della tua prostituzione sulle colline e per i campi. Guai a te, o Gerusalemme! Quando avverrà mai che tu ti purifichi?" |
