| Truly, my eye has seen all this, word of it has come to my ear, and I have knowledge of it. | Ecco, l’occhio mio tutto questo l’ha veduto; l’orecchio mio l’ha udito e l’ha inteso. |
| The same things are in my mind as in yours; I am equal to you. | Quel che sapete voi lo so pur io, non vi sono punto inferiore. |
| But I would have talk with the Ruler of all, and my desire is to have an argument with God. | Ma io vorrei parlare con l’Onnipotente, avrei caro di ragionar con Dio; |
| But you put a false face on things; all your attempts to put things right are of no value. | giacché voi siete de’ fabbri di menzogne, siete tutti quanti de’ medici da nulla. |
| If only you would keep quiet, it would be a sign of wisdom! | Oh se serbaste il silenzio! esso vi conterebbe come sapienza. |
| Give ear to the argument of my mouth, and take note of the words of my lips. | Ascoltate, vi prego, quel che ho da rimproverarvi; state attenti alle ragioni delle mie labbra! |
| Will you say in God's name what is not right, and put false words into his mouth? | Volete dunque difendere Iddio parlando iniquamente? sostener la sua causa con parole di frode? |
| Will you have respect for God's person in this cause, and put yourselves forward as his supporters? | Volete aver riguardo alla sua persona? e costituirvi gli avvocati di Dio? |
| Will it be good for you to be searched out by him, or have you the thought that he may be guided into error like a man? | Sarà egli un bene per voi quando vi scruterà a fondo? credete ingannarlo come s’inganna un uomo? |
| He will certainly put you right, if you have respect for persons in secret. | Certo egli vi riprenderà severamente se nel vostro segreto avete dei riguardi personali. |
| Will not his glory put you in fear, so that your hearts will be overcome before him? | La maestà sua non vi farà sgomenti? Il suo terrore non piomberà su di voi? |
| Your wise sayings are only dust, and your strong places are only earth. | I vostri detti memorandi son massime di cenere; i vostri baluardi son baluardi d’argilla. |
| Keep quiet, and let me say what is in my mind, whatever may come to me. | Tacete! lasciatemi stare! voglio parlare io, e m’avvenga quello che può! |
| I will take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand. | Perché prenderei la mia carne coi denti? Metterò piuttosto la mia vita nelle mie mani. |
| Truly, he will put an end to me; I have no hope; but I will not give way in argument before him; | Ecco, egli m’ucciderà; non spero più nulla; ma io difenderò in faccia a lui la mia condotta! |
| And that will be my salvation, for an evil-doer would not come before him, | Anche questo servirà alla mia salvezza; poiché un empio non ardirebbe presentarsi a lui. |
| Give ear with care to my words, and keep what I say in your minds. | Ascoltate attentamente il mio discorso, porgete orecchio a quanto sto per dichiararvi. |
| See now, I have put my cause in order, and I am certain that I will be seen to be right. | Ecco, io ho disposto ogni cosa per la causa; so che sarò riconosciuto giusto. |
| Is any one able to take up the argument against me? If so, I would keep quiet and give up my breath. | V’è qualcuno che voglia farmi opposizione? Se v’è io mi taccio e vo’ morire. |
| Only two things do not do to me, then I will come before your face: | Ma, o Dio, concedimi solo due cose, e non mi nasconderò dal tuo cospetto: |
| Take your hand far away from me; and let me not be overcome by fear of you. | ritirami d’addosso la tua mano, e fa’ che i tuoi terrori non mi spaventin più. |
| Then at the sound of your voice I will give answer; or let me put forward my cause for you to give me an answer. | Poi interpellami, ed io risponderò; o parlerò io, e tu replicherai. |
| What is the number of my evil-doings and my sins? give me knowledge of them. | Quante sono le mie iniquità, quanti i miei peccati? Fammi conoscere la mia trasgressione, il mio peccato! |
| Why is your face veiled from me, as if I was numbered among your haters? | Perché nascondi il tuo volto, e mi tieni in conto di nemico? |
| Will you be hard on a leaf in flight before the wind? will you make a dry stem go more quickly on its way? | Vuoi tu atterrire una foglia portata via dal vento? Vuoi tu perseguitare una pagliuzza inaridita? |
| For you put bitter things on record against me, and send punishment on me for the sins of my early years; | tu che mi condanni a pene così amare, e mi fai espiare i falli della mia giovinezza, |
| And you put chains on my feet, watching all my ways, and making a limit for my steps; | tu che metti i miei piedi nei ceppi, che spii tutti i miei movimenti, e tracci una linea intorno alla pianta de’ miei piedi? |
| Though a man comes to nothing like a bit of dead wood, or like a robe which has become food for the worm. | Intanto questo mio corpo si disfa come legno tarlato, come un abito roso dalle tignuole. |
