| Now when it came to the ears of Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, that Joshua had taken Ai, and had given it up to the curse (for as he had done to Jericho and its king, so he had done to Ai and its king); and that the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living among them; | Or quando Adoni-Tsedek, re di Gerusalemme, udì che Giosuè avea preso Ai e l’avea votata allo sterminio, che avea trattato Ai e il suo re nel modo che avea trattato Gerico e il suo re, che gli abitanti di Gabaon avean fatto la pace con gl’Israeliti ed erano in mezzo a loro, |
| He was in great fear, because Gibeon was a great town, like one of the king's towns, greater than Ai, and all the men in it were men of war. | fu tutto spaventato; perché Gabaon era una città grande come una delle città reali, anche più grande di Ai, e tutti gli uomini suoi erano valorosi. |
| So Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, sent to Hoham, king of Hebron, and to Piram, king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia, king of Lachish, and to Debir, king of Eglon, saying, | Perciò Adoni-Tsedek, re di Gerusalemme, mandò a dire a Hoham re di Hebron, a Piram re di Iarmuth, a Iafia re di Lakis e a Debir re di Eglon: |
| Come up to me and give me help, and let us make an attack on Gibeon: for they have made peace with Joshua and the children of Israel. | "Salite da me, soccorretemi, e noi batteremo Gabaon, perché ha fatto la pace con Giosuè e coi figliuoli d’Israele". |
| So the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, were banded together, and went up with all their armies and took up their position before Gibeon and made war against it. | E cinque re degli Amorei, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron, il re di Iarmuth, il re di Lakis e il re di Eglon si radunarono, salirono con tutti i loro eserciti, si accamparono dirimpetto a Gabaon, e l’attaccarono. |
| And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua to the tent-circle at Gilgal, saying, Be not slow to send help to your servants; come up quickly to our support and keep us safe: for all the kings of the Amorites from the hill-country have come together against us. | Allora i Gabaoniti mandarono a dire a Giosuè, al campo di Ghilgal: "Non negare ai tuoi servi il tuo aiuto, affrettati a salire da noi, liberaci, soccorrici, perché tutti i re degli Amorei che abitano la contrada montuosa si sono radunati contro di noi". |
| So Joshua went up from Gilgal with all his army and all his men of war. | E Giosuè salì da Ghilgal, con tutta la gente di guerra e con tutti gli uomini segnalati per valore. |
| And the Lord said to Joshua, Have no fear of them, for I have given them into your hands; they will all give way before you. | E l’Eterno disse a Giosuè: "Non li temere, perché io li ho dati in poter tuo; nessun di loro potrà starti a fronte". |
| So Joshua, having come up from Gilgal all night, made a sudden attack on them. | E Giosuè piombò loro addosso all’improvviso: avea marciato tutta la notte da Ghilgal. |
| And the Lord made them full of fear before Israel, and they put great numbers of them to death at Gibeon, and went after them by the way going up to Beth-horon, driving them back to Azekah and Makkedah | E l’Eterno li mise in rotta davanti ad Israele, che fe’ loro subire una grande sconfitta presso Gabaon, li inseguì per la via che sale a Beth-Horon, e li batté fino ad Azeka e a Makkeda. |
| And in their flight before Israel, on the way down from Beth-horon, the Lord sent down great stones from heaven on them all the way to Azekah, causing their death: those whose death was caused by the stones were more than those whom the children of Israel put to death with the sword. | Mentre fuggivano d’innanzi a Israele ed erano alla scesa di Beth-Horon, l’Eterno fe’ cader dal cielo su loro delle grosse pietre fino ad Azeka, ed essi perirono; quelli che morirono per le pietre della grandinata furon più numerosi di quelli che i figliuoli d’Israele uccisero con la spada. |
| It was on the day when the Lord gave up the Amorites into the hands of the children of Israel that Joshua said to the Lord, before the eyes of Israel, Sun, be at rest over Gibeon; and you, O moon, in the valley of Aijalon. | Allora Giosuè parlò all’Eterno, il giorno che l’Eterno diede gli Amorei in potere de’ figliuoli d’Israele, e disse in presenza d’Israele: "Sole, fermati su Gabaon, e tu, luna, sulla valle d’Aialon!" |
| And the sun was at rest and the moon kept its place till the nation had given punishment to their attackers. (Is it not recorded in the book of Jashar?) So the sun kept its place in the middle of the heavens, and was waiting, and did not go down, for the space of a day. | E il sole si fermò, e la luna rimase la suo luogo, finché la nazione si fosse vendicata de’ suoi nemici. Questo non sta egli scritto nel libro del Giusto? E il sole si fermò in mezzo al cielo e non s’affrettò a tramontare per quasi un giorno intero. |
| And there was no day like that, before it or after it, when the Lord gave ear to the voice of a man; for the Lord was fighting for Israel. | E mai, né prima né poi, s’è dato un giorno simile a quello, nel quale l’Eterno abbia esaudito la voce d’un uomo; poiché l’Eterno combatteva per Israele. |
| And Joshua, with all Israel, went back to the tent-circle at Gilgal. | E Giosuè, con tutto Israele, tornò al campo di Ghilgal. |
| But these five kings went in flight secretly to a hole in the rock at Makkedah. | Or i cinque re eran fuggiti, e s’erano nascosti nella spelonca di Makkeda. |
| And word was given to Joshua that the five kings had been taken in a hole in the rock at Makkedah. | La cosa fu riferita a Giosuè e gli fu detto: "I cinque re sono stati trovati nascosti nella spelonca di Makkeda". |
| And Joshua said, Let great stones be rolled against the mouth of the hole, and let men keep watch by it: | Allora Giosuè disse: "Rotolate delle grosse pietre all’imboccatura della spelonca, e ponetevi degli uomini per far loro la guardia; |
| But do you, without waiting, go after their army, attacking them from the back; do not let them get into their towns, for the Lord your God has given them into your hands. | ma voi non vi fermate; inseguite i vostri nemici, e colpite le retroguardie; non li lasciate entrare nelle loro città, perché l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, li ha dati in poter vostro". |
| Now when Joshua and the children of Israel had come to the end of their war of complete destruction, and had put to death all but a small band who had got safely into the walled towns, | E quando Giosuè e i figliuoli d’Israele ebbero finito d’infliggere loro una grande, completa disfatta, e quelli che scamparono si furon rifugiati nelle città fortificate, |
| All the people went back to Joshua to the tent-circle at Makkedah in peace: and no one said a word against the children of Israel. | tutto il popolo tornò tranquillamente a Giosuè al campo di Makkeda, senza che alcuno osasse fiatare contro i figliuoli d’Israele. |
| Then Joshua said, Take away the stones from the mouth of the hole in the rock, and make those five kings come out to me. | Allora Giosuè disse: "Aprite l’imboccatura della caverna, traetene fuori quei cinque re, e menateli a me". |
| And they did so, and made those five kings come out of the hole to him, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. | Quelli fecero così, trassero dalla spelonca quei cinque re, il re di Gerusalemme, il re di Hebron, il re di Iarmuth, il re di Lakis, il re di Eglon, e glieli menarono. |
| And when they had made those kings come out to Joshua, Joshua sent for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, Come near and put your feet on the necks of these kings. So they came near and put their feet on their necks. | E quand’ebbero tratti dalla spelonca e menati a Giosuè quei re Giosuè, chiamò tutti gli uomini d’Israele e disse ai capi della gente di guerra ch’era andata con lui: "Accostatevi, mettete il piede sul collo di questi re". Quelli s’accostarono e misero loro il piede sul collo. |
| And Joshua said to them, Have no fear and do not be troubled; be strong and take heart: for so will the Lord do to all against whom you make war. | E Giosuè disse loro: "Non temete, non vi sgomentate, siate forti, e fatevi animo, perché così farà l’Eterno a tutti i vostri nemici contro ai quali avete a combattere". |
| Then Joshua had them put to death, hanging them on five trees, where they were till evening. | Dopo ciò Giosuè li percosse e li fece morire, quindi li appiccò a cinque alberi; e quelli rimasero appiccati agli alberi fino a sera. |
| And when the sun went down, they were taken down from the trees, by Joshua's orders, and put into the hole where they had gone to be safe; and great stones were placed at the mouth of the hole, where they are to this day. | E sul tramontar del sole, Giosuè ordino che fossero calati dagli alberi e gettati nella spelonca dove s’erano nascosti; e che all’imboccatura della caverna fossero messe delle grosse pietre, le quali vi son rimaste fino al dì d’oggi. |
| That day Joshua took Makkedah, and put it and its king to the sword; every soul in it he gave up to the curse without mercy: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. | In quel medesimo giorno Giosuè prese Makkeda e fece passare a fil di spada la città e il suo re; li votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e tratto il re di Makkeda come avea trattato il re di Gerico. |
| Then Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Makkedah and came to Libnah, and made an attack on it; | Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Makkeda a Libna, e l’attaccò. |
| And again the Lord gave it and its king into the hands of Israel; and he put it and every person in it to the sword, till their destruction was complete; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. | E l’Eterno diede anche quella col suo re nelle mani d’Israele, e Giosuè la mise a fil di spada con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò scampare una, e trattò il re d’essa, come avea trattato il re di Gerico. |
| Then Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Libnah to Lachish, and took up their position against it and made an attack on it, | Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Libna a Lakis; s’accampò dirimpetto a questa, e l’attaccò. |
| And the Lord gave Lachish into the hands of Israel, and on the second day he took it, putting it and every person in it to the sword without mercy, as he had done to Libnah. | E l’Eterno diede Lakis nelle mani d’Israele, che la prese il secondo giorno, e la mise a fil di spada, con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come avea fatto a Libna. Allora Horam, re di Ghezer, salì in soccorso di Lakis; |
| Then Horam, king of Gezer, came up to the help of Lachish; and Joshua overcame him and his people, putting all of them to death. | ma Giosuè batté lui e il suo popolo così da non lasciarne scampare alcuno. |
| And Joshua and all Israel with him went on from Lachish to Eglon: and they took up their position against it and made an attack on it; | Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele passò da Lakis ad Eglon; s’accamparono dirimpetto a questa, e l’attaccarono. |
| And that day they took it, putting it and every person in it to the sword, as he had done to Lachish. | La presero quel medesimo giorno e la misero a fil di spada. In quel giorno Giosuè votò allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, esattamente come avea fatto a Lakis. |
| And Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron, and made an attack on it; | Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele salì da Eglon ad Hebron, e l’attaccarono. |
| And took it, overcoming it and putting it and its king and its towns and every person in it to the sword: as he had done to Eglon, he put them all to death, and gave it up to the curse with every person in it. | La presero, la misero a fil di spada insieme col suo re, con tutte le sue città e con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano; non ne lasciò sfuggire una, esattamente come avea fatto ad Eglon; la votò allo sterminio con tutte le persone che vi si trovavano. |
| And Joshua and all Israel with him went on to make an attack on Debir; | Poi Giosuè con tutto Israele tornò verso Debir, e l’attaccò. |
| And he took it, with its king and all its towns: and he put them to the sword, giving every person in it to the curse; all were put to death: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and its king. | La prese col suo re e con tutte le sue città; la misero a fil di spada e votarono allo sterminio tutte le persone che vi si trovavano, senza che ne scampasse una. Egli trattò Debir e il suo re come avea trattato Hebron, come avea trattato Libna e il suo re. |
| So Joshua overcame all the land, the hill-country and the South and the lowland and the mountain slopes, and all their kings; all were put to death: and every living thing he gave up to the curse, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had given him orders. | Giosuè dunque batté tutto il paese, la contrada montuosa, il mezzogiorno, la regione bassa, le pendici, e tutti i loro re; non lasciò scampare alcuno, ma votò allo sterminio tutto ciò che avea vita, come l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, avea comandato. |
| Joshua overcame them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the land of Goshen as far as Gibeon. | Così Giosuè li batté da Kades-Barnea fino a Gaza, e batté tutto il paese di Goscen fino a Gabaon. |
| And all these kings and their land Joshua took at the same time, because the Lord, the God of Israel, was fighting for Israel. | E Giosuè prese ad una volta tutti quei re e i loro paesi, perché l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, combatteva per Israele. |
| Then Joshua and all Israel with him went back to their tents at Gilgal. | Poi Giosuè, con tutto Israele, fece ritorno al campo di Ghilgal. |
