| Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a great man of war; he was the son of a loose woman, and Gilead was his father. | Or Jefte, il Galaadita, era un uomo forte e valoroso, figliuolo di una meretrice, e avea Galaad per padre. |
| And Gilead's wife gave birth to sons, and when her sons became men, they sent Jephthah away, saying, You have no part in the heritage of our father's house, for you are the son of another woman. | La moglie di Galaad gli avea dato de’ figliuoli; e quando questi figliuoli della moglie furono grandi, cacciarono Jefte e gli dissero: "Tu non avrai eredità in casa di nostro padre, perché sei figliuolo d’un’altra donna". |
| So Jephthah went in flight from his brothers and was living in the land of Tob, where a number of good-for-nothing men, joining Jephthah, went out with him on his undertakings. | E Jefte se ne fuggì lungi dai suoi fratelli e si stabilì nel paese di Tob. Degli uomini da nulla si raccolsero attorno a Jefte, e facevano delle incursioni con lui. |
| Now after a time the children of Ammon made war against Israel. | Qualche tempo dopo avvenne che i figliuoli di Ammon mossero guerra a Israele. |
| And when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the responsible men of Gilead went to get Jephthah back from the land of Tob; | E come i figliuoli di Ammon movean guerra a Israele, gli anziani di Galaad andarono a cercare Jefte nel paese di Tob. |
| And they said to Jephthah, Come and be our chief so that we may make war against the children of Ammon. | E dissero a Jefte: "Vieni, sii nostro capitano, e combatteremo contro i figliuoli di Ammon". |
| But Jephthah said to the responsible men of Gilead, Did you not, in your hate for me, send me away from my father's house? Why do you come to me now when you are in trouble? | Ma Jefte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: "Non m’avete voi odiato e cacciato dalla casa di mio padre? Perché venite da me ora che siete nell’angustia?" |
| And the responsible men of Gilead said to Jephthah, That is the reason we have come back to you; so go with us and make war against the children of Ammon, and we will make you our head over all the people of Gilead. | E gli anziani di Galaad dissero a Jefte: "Appunto per questo torniamo ora da te, onde tu venga con noi e combatta contro i figliuoli di Ammon e tu sia capo di noi tutti abitanti di Galaad". |
| Then Jephthah said to the responsible men of Gilead, If you take me back to make war against the children of Ammon, and if with the help of the Lord I overcome them, will you make me your head? | Jefte rispose agli anziani di Galaad: "Se mi riconducete da voi per combattere contro i figliuoli di Ammon, e l’Eterno li dà in mio potere, io sarò vostro capo". |
| And the responsible men of Gilead said to Jephthah, May the Lord be our witness: we will certainly do as you say. | E gli anziani di Galaad dissero a Jefte: "L’Eterno sia testimone fra noi, e ci punisca se non facciamo quello che hai detto". |
| So Jephthah went with the responsible men of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Jephthah said all these things before the Lord in Mizpah. | Jefte dunque andò con gli anziani di Galaad; il popolo lo costituì suo capo e condottiero, e Jefte ripeté davanti all’Eterno, a Mitspa, tutte le parole che avea dette prima. |
| Then Jephthah sent men to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What have you against me that you have come to make war against my land? | Poi Jefte inviò de’ messi al re de’ figliuoli di Ammon per dirgli: "Che questione c’è fra me e te che tu venga contro di me per far guerra al mio paese?" |
| And the king of the children of Ammon said to the men sent by Jephthah, Because Israel, when he came up out of Egypt, took away my land, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok and as far as Jordan: so now, give me back those lands quietly. | E il re de’ figliuoli di Ammon rispose ai messi di Jefte: "Mi son mosso perché, quando Israele salì dall’Egitto, s’impadronì del mio paese, dall’Arnon fino allo Jabbok e al Giordano; rendimelo all’amichevole". |
| And Jephthah sent again to the king of the children of Ammon, | Jefte inviò di nuovo de’ messi al re de’ figliuoli di Ammon per dirgli: |
| And said to him, This is the word of Jephthah: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the children of Ammon; | "Così dice Jefte: Israele non s’impadronì del paese di Moab, né del paese de’ figliuoli di Ammon; |
| But when they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the waste land to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh; | ma, quando Israele salì dall’Egitto e attraversò il deserto fino al mar Rosso e giunse a Kades, |
| Then Israel sent men to the king of Edom saying, Let me now go through your land; but the king of Edom did not give ear to them. And in the same way he sent to the king of Moab, but he would not; so Israel went on living in Kadesh. | inviò de’ messi al re di Edom per dirgli: Ti prego, lasciami passare per il tuo paese; ma il re di Edom non acconsentì. Mandò anche al re di Moab, il quale pure rifiutò; e Israele rimase a Kades. |
| Then he went on through the waste land and round the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and put up their tents on the other side of the Arnon; they did not come inside the limit of Moab, for the Arnon was the limit of Moab. | Poi camminò per il deserto, fece il giro del paese di Edom e del paese di Moab, giunse a oriente del paese di Moab, e si accampò di là dall’Arnon, senza entrare nel territorio di Moab; perché l’Arnon segna il confine di Moab. |
| And Israel sent men to Sihon, king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, Let me now go through your land to my place. | E Israele inviò de’ messi a Sihon, re degli Amorei, re di Heshbon, e gli fe’ dire: Ti preghiamo lasciaci passare dal tuo paese, per arrivare al nostro. |
| But Sihon would not give way and let Israel go through his land; and Sihon got together all his people, and put his army in position in Jahaz, and made war on Israel. | Ma Sihon non si fidò d’Israele per permettergli di passare per il suo territorio; anzi Sihon radunò tutta la sua gente, s’accampò a Jahats, e combatté contro Israele. |
| And the Lord, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his people into the hands of Israel, and they overcame them; so all the land of the Amorites, the people of that land, became Israel's. | E l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, diede Sihon e tutta la sua gente nelle mani d’Israele, che li sconfisse; così Israele conquistò tutto il paese degli Amorei, che abitavano quella contrada; |
| All the limit of the Amorites was theirs, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok and from the waste land even to Jordan. | conquistò tutto il territorio degli Amorei, dall’Arnon allo Jabbok e dal deserto al Giordano. |
| So now the Lord, the God of Israel, has taken away their land from the Amorites and given it to his people Israel; are you then to have it? | E ora che l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, ha cacciato gli Amorei d’innanzi a Israele, ch’è il suo popolo, dovresti tu possedere il loro paese? |
| Do you not keep the lands of those whom Chemosh your god sends out from before you? So we will keep all the lands of those whom the Lord our God sends out from before us. | Non possiedi tu quello che Kemosh, il tuo dio, t’ha fatto possedere? Così anche noi possederemo il paese di quelli che l’Eterno ha cacciati d’innanzi a noi. |
| What! are you any better than Balak, the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever take up a cause against Israel or make war against them? | Sei tu forse da più di Balak, figliuolo di Tsippor, re di Moab? Mosse egli querela ad Israele, o gli fece egli guerra? |
| While Israel was living in Heshbon and its daughter-towns and in Aroer and its daughter-towns and in all the towns which are by the side of the Arnon, for three hundred years, why did you not get them back at that time? | Son trecent’anni che Israele abita ad Heshbon e nelle città del suo territorio, ad Aroer e nelle città del suo territorio, e in tutte le città lungo l’Arnon; perché non gliele avete tolte durante questo tempo? |
| So I have done no wrong against you, but you are doing wrong to me in fighting against me: may the Lord, who is Judge this day, be judge between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. | E io non t’ho offeso, e tu agisci male verso di me, movendomi guerra. L’Eterno, il giudice, giudichi oggi tra i figliuoli d’Israele e i figliuoli di Ammon!" |
| The king of the children of Ammon, however, did not give ear to the words which Jephthah sent to him. | Ma il re de’ figliuoli di Ammon non diede ascolto alle parole che Jefte gli avea fatto dire. |
| Then the spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah, and he went through Gilead and Manasseh, and came to Mizpeh of Gilead; and from Mizpeh of Gilead he went over to the children of Ammon. | Allora lo spirito dell’Eterno venne su Jefte, che attraversò Galaad e Manasse, passò a Mitspa di Galaad, e da Mitspa di Galaad mosse contro i figliuoli di Ammon. |
| And Jephthah took an oath to the Lord, and said, If you will give the children of Ammon into my hands, | E Jefte fece un voto all’Eterno, e disse: "Se tu mi dài nelle mani i figliuoli di Ammon, |
| Then whoever comes out from the door of my house, meeting me when I come back in peace from the children of Ammon, will be the Lord's and I will give him as a burned offering. | la persona che uscirà dalle porte di casa mia per venirmi incontro quando tornerò vittorioso dai figliuoli di Ammon, sarà dell’Eterno, e io l’offrirò in olocausto". |
| So Jephthah went over to the children of Ammon to make war on them; and the Lord gave them into his hands. | E Jefte marciò contro i figliuoli di Ammon per far loro guerra, e l’Eterno glieli diede nelle mani. |
| And he made an attack on them from Aroer all the way to Minnith, overrunning twenty towns, as far as Abel-cheramim, and put great numbers to the sword. So the children of Ammon were crushed before the children of Israel. | E egli inflisse loro una grandissima sconfitta, da Aroer fin verso Minnith, prendendo loro venti città, e fino ad Abel-Keramim. Così i figliuoli di Ammon furono umiliati dinanzi ai figliuoli d’Israele. |
| Then Jephthah came back to his house in Mizpah, and his daughter came out, meeting him on his way with music and with dances; she was his only child; he had no other sons or daughters. | Or Jefte se ne tornò a Mitspa, a casa sua; ed ecco uscirgli incontro la sua figliuola, con timpani e danze. Era l’unica sua figlia: non aveva altri figliuoli né altre figliuole. |
| And when he saw her he was overcome with grief, and said, Ah! my daughter! I am crushed with sorrow, and it is you who are the chief cause of my trouble; for I have made an oath to the Lord and I may not take it back. | E, come la vide, si stracciò le vesti, e disse: "Ah, figlia mia! tu mi accasci, tu mi accasci; tu sei fra quelli che mi conturbano! poiché io ho dato parola all’Eterno, e non posso ritrarmene". |
| And she said to him, My father, you have made an oath to the Lord; do then to me whatever you have said; for the Lord has sent a full reward on your haters, on the children of Ammon. | Ella gli disse: "Padre mio, se hai dato parola all’Eterno, fa’ di me secondo quel che hai proferito, giacché l’Eterno t’ha dato di far vendetta de’ figliuoli di Ammon, tuoi nemici". |
| Then she said to her father, Only do this for me: let me have two months to go away into the mountains with my friends, weeping for my sad fate. | Poi disse a suo padre: "Mi sia concesso questo: lasciami libera per due mesi, ond’io vada e scenda per i monti a piangere la mia verginità con le mie compagne". |
| And he said, Go then. So he sent her away for two months; and she went with her friends to the mountains, weeping for her sad fate. | Egli le rispose: "Va’!" e la lasciò andare per due mesi. Ed ella se ne andò con le sue compagne, e pianse sui monti la sua verginità. |
| And at the end of two months she went back to her father, who did with her as he had said in his oath: and she had never been touched by a man. So it became a rule in Israel, | Alla fine dei due mesi, ella tornò da suo padre; ed egli fece di lei quello che avea promesso con voto. Ella non avea conosciuto uomo. Di qui venne in Israele |
| For the women to go year by year sorrowing for the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite, four days in every year. | l’usanza che le figliuole d’Israele vanno tutti gli anni a celebrar la figliuola di Jefte, il Galaadita, per quattro giorni. |
