| As a number of attempts have been made to put together in order an account of those events which took place among us, | Poiché molti hanno intrapreso ad ordinare una narrazione de’ fatti che si son compiuti tra noi, |
| As they were handed down to us by those who saw them from the first and were preachers of the word, | secondo che ce li hanno tramandati quelli che da principio ne furono testimoni oculari e che divennero ministri della Parola, |
| It seemed good to me, having made observation, with great care, of the direction of events in their order, to put the facts in writing for you, most noble Theophilus; | è parso bene anche, a me dopo essermi accuratamente informato d’ogni cosa dall’origine, di scrivertene per ordine, o eccellentissimo Teofilo, |
| So that you might have certain knowledge of those things about which you were given teaching. | affinché tu riconosca la certezza delle cose che ti sono state insegnate. |
| In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, there was a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the order of Abijah; and he had a wife of the family of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. | Ai dì d’Erode, re della Giudea, v’era un certo sacerdote di nome Zaccaria, della muta di Abia; e sua moglie era delle figliuole d’Aronne e si chiamava Elisabetta. |
| They were upright in the eyes of God, keeping all the rules and orders of God, and doing no wrong. | Or erano ambedue giusti nel cospetto di Dio, camminando irreprensibili in tutti i comandamenti e precetti del Signore. |
| And they were without children, because Elisabeth had never given birth, and they were at that time very old. | E non aveano figliuoli, perché Elisabetta era sterile, ed erano ambedue avanzati in età. |
| Now it came about that in his turn he was acting as priest before God, | Or avvenne che esercitando Zaccaria il sacerdozio dinanzi a Dio nell’ordine della sua muta, |
| And as was the way of the priests, he had to go into the Temple to see to the burning of perfumes. | secondo l’usanza del sacerdozio, gli toccò a sorte d’entrar Del tempio del Signore per offrirvi il profumo; |
| And all the people were offering prayers outside, at the time of the burning of perfumes. | e tutta la moltitudine del popolo stava di fuori in preghiera nell’ora del profumo. |
| And he saw an angel of the Lord in his place on the right side of the altar. | E gli apparve un angelo del Signore, ritto alla destra dell’altare de’ profumi. |
| And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear came on him. | E Zaccaria, vedutolo, fu turbato e preso da spavento. |
| But the angel said, Have no fear, Zacharias, for your prayer has come to the ears of God, and your wife Elisabeth will have a son, and his name will be John. | Ma l’angelo gli disse: Non temere, Zaccaria, perché la tua preghiera è stata esaudita; e tua moglie Elisabetta ti partorirà un figliuolo, al quale porrai nome Giovanni. |
| And you will be glad and have great delight; and numbers of people will have joy at his birth. | E tu ne avrai gioia ed allegrezza, e molti si rallegreranno per la sua nascita. |
| For he will be great in the eyes of the Lord; he will not take wine or strong drink; and he will be full of the Spirit of God from his birth. | Poiché sarà grande nel cospetto del Signore; non berrà né vino né cervogia, e sarà ripieno dello Spirito Santo fin dal seno di sua madre, |
| And through him great numbers of the children of Israel will be turned to the Lord their God. | e convertirà molti de’ figliuoli d’Israele al Signore Iddio loro; |
| And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, turning the hearts of fathers to their children, and wrongdoers to the way of righteousness; to make ready a people whose hearts have been turned to the Lord. | ed egli andrà innanzi a lui con lo spirito e con la potenza d’Elia, per volgere i cuori de’ padri ai figliuoli e i ribelli alla saviezza de’ giusti, affin di preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto. |
| And Zacharias said to the angel, How may I be certain of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is far on in years. | E Zaccaria disse all’angelo: A che conoscerò io questo? Perch’io son vecchio e mia moglie è avanti nell’età. |
| And the angel, answering, said, I am Gabriel, whose place is before God; I have been sent to say these words to you and to give you this good news. | E l’angelo, rispondendo, gli disse: Io son Gabriele, che sto davanti a Dio; e sono stato mandato a parlarti e recarti questa buona notizia. |
| Now, see, you will be without voice or language till the day when these things come about, because you had not faith in my words, which will have effect at the right time. | Ed ecco, tu sarai muto, e non potrai parlare fino al giorno che queste cose avverranno, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole che si adempiranno a suo tempo. |
| And the people were waiting for Zacharias and were surprised because he was in the Temple for such a long time. | Il popolo intanto stava aspettando Zaccaria, e si maravigliava che s’indugiasse tanto nel tempio. |
| And when he came out he was not able to say anything, and they saw that he had seen a vision in the Temple; and he was making signs to them without words. | Ma quando fu uscito, non potea parlar loro; e capirono che avea avuto una visione nel tempio; ed egli faceva loro dei segni e rimase muto. |
| And when the days of his work in the Temple were ended, he went back to his house. | E quando furon compiuti i giorni del suo ministero, egli se ne andò a casa sua. |
| After that time, Elisabeth, being certain that she was to become a mother, kept herself from men's eyes for five months, saying, | Or dopo que’ giorni, Elisabetta sua moglie rimase incinta; e si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi, dicendo: |
| The Lord has done this to me, for his eyes were on me, to take away my shame in the eyes of men. | Ecco quel che il Signore ha fatto per me ne’ giorni nei quali ha rivolto a me lo sguardo per togliere il mio vituperio fra gli uomini. |
| Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee, named Nazareth, | Al sesto mese l’angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città di Galilea detta Nazaret |
| To a virgin who was to be married to a man named Joseph, of the family of David; and the name of the virgin was Mary. | ad una vergine fidanzata ad un uomo chiamato Giuseppe della casa di Davide; e il nome della vergine era Maria. |
| And the angel came in to her and said, Peace be with you, to whom special grace has been given; the Lord is with you. | E l’angelo, entrato da lei, disse: Ti saluto, o favorita dalla grazia; il Signore è teco. |
| But she was greatly troubled at his words, and said to herself, What may be the purpose of these words? | Ed ella fu turbata a questa parola, e si domandava che cosa volesse dire un tal saluto. |
| And the angel said to her, Have no fear, Mary, for you have God's approval. | E l’angelo le disse: Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio. |
| And see, you will give birth to a son, and his name will be Jesus. | Ed ecco tu concepirai nel seno e partorirai un figliuolo e gli porrai nome Gesù. |
| He will be great, and will be named the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God will give him the kingdom of David, his father: | Questi sarà grande, e sarà chiamato Figliuol dell’Altissimo, e il Signore Iddio gli darà il trono di Davide suo padre, |
| He will have rule over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. | ed egli regnerà sulla casa di Giacobbe in eterno, e il suo regno non avrà mai fine. |
| And Mary said to the angel, How may this be, because I have had no knowledge of a man? | E Maria disse all’angelo: Come avverrà questo, poiché non conosco uomo? |
| And the angel in answer said to her, The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will come to rest on you, and so that which will come to birth will be named holy, Son of God. | E l’angelo, rispondendo, le disse: Lo Spirito Santo verrà su di te e la potenza dell’Altissimo ti coprirà dell’ombra sua; perciò ancora il santo che nascerà sarà chiamato Figliuolo di Dio. |
| Even now Elisabeth, who is of your family, is to be a mother, though she is old: and this is the sixth month with her who was without children. | Ed ecco, Elisabetta, tua parente, ha concepito anche lei un figliuolo nella sua vecchiaia; e questo è il sesto mese per lei, ch’era chiamata sterile; |
| For there is nothing which God is not able to do. | poiché nessuna parola di Dio rimarrà inefficace. |
| And Mary said: I am the servant of the Lord; may it be to me as you say. And the angel went away. | E Maria disse: Ecco, io son l’ancella del Signore; siami fatto secondo la tua parola. E l’angelo si partì da lei. |
| Then Mary got up and went quickly into the high lands, to a town of Judah; | In que’ giorni Maria si levò e se ne andò in fretta nella regione montuosa, in una città di Giuda, |
| And went into the house of Zacharias and took Elisabeth in her arms. | ed entrò in casa di Zaccaria e salutò Elisabetta. |
| And when the voice of Mary came to the ears of Elisabeth, the baby made a sudden move inside her; then Elisabeth was full of the Holy Spirit, | E avvenne che come Elisabetta ebbe udito il saluto di Maria, il bambino le balzò nel seno; ed Elisabetta fu ripiena di Spirito Santo, |
| And she said with a loud voice: May blessing be on you among women, and a blessing on the child of your body. | e a gran voce esclamò: Benedetta sei tu fra le donne, e benedetto è il frutto del tuo seno! |
| How is it that the mother of my Lord comes to me? | E come mai m’è dato che la madre del mio Signore venga da me? |
| For, truly, when the sound of your voice came to my ears, the baby in my body made a sudden move for joy. | Poiché ecco, non appena la voce del tuo saluto m’è giunta agli orecchi, il bambino m’è per giubilo balzato nel seno. |
| Happy will she be who had faith that the things which the Lord has said to her will be done. | E beata è colei che ha creduto, perché le cose dettele da parte del Signore avranno compimento. |
| And Mary said: My soul gives glory to God; | E Maria disse: "L’anima mia magnifica il Signore, |
| My spirit is glad in God my Saviour. | e lo spirito mio esulta in Dio mio Salvatore, |
| For he has had pity on his servant, though she is poor and lowly placed: and from this hour will all generations give witness to the blessing which has come to me. | poich’egli ha riguardato alla bassezza della sua ancella. Perché ecco, d’ora innanzi tutte le età mi chiameranno beata, |
| For he who is strong has done great things for me; and holy is his name. | poiché il Potente mi ha fatto grandi cose. Santo è il suo nome |
| His mercy is for all generations in whom is the fear of him. | e la sua misericordia è d’età in età per quelli che lo temono. |
| With his arm he has done acts of power; he has put to flight those who have pride in their hearts. | Egli ha operato potentemente col suo braccio ha disperso quelli ch’eran superbi ne’ pensieri del cuor loro; |
| He has put down kings from their seats, lifting up on high the men of low degree. | ha tratto giù dai troni i potenti, ed ha innalzato gli umili; |
| Those who had no food he made full of good things; the men of wealth he sent away with nothing in their hands; | ha ricolmato di beni i famelici, e ha rimandati a vuoto i ricchi. |
| His help he has given to Israel, his servant, so that he might keep in mind his mercy to Abraham and his seed for ever, | Ha soccorso Israele, suo servitore, ricordandosi della misericordia |
| As he gave his word to our fathers. | di cui avea parlato ai nostri padri, verso Abramo e verso la sua progenie in perpetuo". |
| And Mary was with her for about three months and then went back to her house. | E Maria rimase con Elisabetta circa tre mesi; poi se ne tornò a casa sua. |
| Now it was time for Elisabeth to give birth, and she had a son. | Or compiutosi per Elisabetta il tempo di partorire, diè alla luce un figliuolo. |
| And it came to the ears of her neighbours and relations that the Lord had been very good to her, and they took part in her joy. | E i suoi vicini e i parenti udirono che il Signore avea magnificata la sua misericordia verso di lei, e se ne rallegravano con essa. |
| And on the eighth day they came to see to the circumcision of the child, and they would have given him the name of Zacharias, his father's name; | Ed ecco che nell’ottavo giorno vennero a circoncidere il bambino, e lo chiamavano Zaccaria dal nome di suo padre. |
| But his mother made answer and said, No, his name is John. | Allora sua madre prese a parlare e disse: No, sarà invece chiamato Giovanni. |
| And they said, Not one of your relations has that name. | Ed essi le dissero: Non v’è alcuno nel tuo parentado che porti questo nome. |
| And they made signs to his father, to say what name was to be given to him. | E per cenni domandavano al padre come voleva che fosse chiamato. |
| And he sent for writing materials and put down: His name is John; and they were all surprised. | Ed egli, chiesta una tavoletta, scrisse così: Il suo nome è Giovanni. E tutti si maravigliarono. |
| And straight away his mouth was open and his tongue was free and he gave praise to God. | In quell’istante la sua bocca fu aperta e la sua lingua sciolta, ed egli parlava benedicendo Iddio. |
| And fear came on all those who were living round about them: and there was much talk about all these things in all the hill-country of Judaea. | E tutti i lor vicini furon presi da timore; e tutte queste cose si divulgavano per tutta la regione montuosa della Giudea. |
| And all who had word of them kept them in their minds and said, What will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. | E tutti quelli che le udirono, le serbarono in cuor loro e diceano: Che sarà mai questo bambino? Perché la mano del Signore era con lui. |
| And his father, Zacharias, was full of the Holy Spirit, and with the voice of a prophet said these words: | E Zaccaria, suo padre, fu ripieno dello Spirito Santo, e profetò dicendo: |
| Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and made them free, | "Benedetto sia il Signore, l’Iddio d’Israele, perché ha visitato e riscattato il suo popolo, |
| Lifting up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, | e ci ha suscitato un potente salvatore nella casa di Davide suo servitore |
| (As he said, by the mouth of his holy prophets, from the earliest times,) | (come avea promesso ab antico per bocca de’ suoi profeti); |
| Salvation from those who are against us, and from the hands of those who have hate for us; | uno che ci salverà da’ nostri nemici e dalle mani di tutti quelli che ci odiano. |
| To do acts of mercy to our fathers and to keep in mind his holy word, | Egli usa così misericordia verso i nostri padri e si ricorda del suo santo patto, |
| The oath which he made to Abraham, our father, | del giuramento che fece ad Abramo nostro padre, |
| That we, being made free from the fear of those who are against us, might give him worship, | affine di concederci che, liberati dalla mano dei nostri nemici, gli servissimo senza paura, |
| In righteousness and holy living before him all our days. | in santità e giustizia, nel suo cospetto, tutti i giorni della nostra vita. |
| And you, child, will be named the prophet of the Most High: you will go before the face of the Lord, to make ready his ways; | E tu, piccol fanciullo, sarai chiamato profeta dell’Altissimo perché andrai davanti alla faccia del Signore per preparar le sue vie, |
| To give knowledge of salvation to his people, through the forgiveness of sins, | per dare al suo popolo conoscenza della salvezza mediante la remissione de’ loro peccati, |
| Because of the loving mercies of our God, by which the dawn from heaven has come to us, | dovuta alle viscere di misericordia del nostro Dio, per le quali l’Aurora dall’alto ci visiterà |
| To give light to those in dark places, and in the shade of death, so that our feet may be guided into the way of peace. | per risplendere su quelli che giacciono in tenebre ed in ombra di morte, per guidare i nostri passi verso la via della pace". |
| And the child became tall, and strong in spirit; and he was living in the waste land till the day when he came before the eyes of Israel. | Or il bambino cresceva e si fortificava in ispirito; e stette ne’ deserti fino al giorno in cui dovea manifestarsi ad Israele. |
