| And it came about on one of those days, when he was teaching the people in the Temple and preaching the good news, | E avvenne un di quei giorni, che mentre insegnava al popolo nel tempio ed evangelizzava, sopraggiunsero i capi sacerdoti e gli scribi con gli anziani, e gli parlaron così: |
| That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority. | Dicci con quale autorità tu fai queste cose, e chi t’ha data codesta autorità. |
| And in answer he said to them, I will put a question to you, and do you give me an answer: | Ed egli, rispondendo, disse loro: Anch’io vi domanderò una cosa: |
| The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men? | Il battesimo di Giovanni era dal cielo a dagli uomini? |
| And they said among themselves, If we say, From heaven; he will say, Why did you not have faith in him? | Ed essi ragionavan fra loro, dicendo: Se diciamo: Dal cielo, egli ci dirà: Perché non gli credeste? |
| But if we say, Of men; we will be stoned by the people, for they are certain that John was a prophet. | Ma se diciamo: Dagli uomini, tutto il popolo ci lapiderà, perché è persuaso che Giovanni era un profeta. |
| And they made answer that they had no idea where it came from. | E risposero che non sapevano d’onde fosse. |
| And Jesus said, And I will not make clear to you by what authority I do these things. | E Gesù disse loro: Neppur io vi dico con quale autorità fo queste cose. |
| And he gave the people this story: A man made a vine-garden and gave the use of it to some field-workers and went into another country for a long time. | Poi prese a dire al popolo questa parabola: Un uomo piantò una vigna, l’allogò a dei lavoratori, e se n’andò in viaggio per lungo tempo. |
| And at the right time he sent a servant to the workers to get part of the fruit from the vines; but the workmen gave him blows and sent him away with nothing. | E nella stagione mandò a que’ lavoratori un servitore perché gli dessero del frutto della vigna; ma i lavoratori, battutolo, lo rimandarono a mani vuote. |
| And he sent another servant, and they gave blows to him in the same way, and put shame on him, and sent him away with nothing. | Ed egli di nuovo mandò un altro servitore; ma essi, dopo aver battuto e vituperato anche questo, lo rimandarono a mani vuote. |
| And he sent a third, and they gave him wounds and put him out. | Ed egli ne mandò ancora un terzo; ed essi, dopo aver ferito anche questo, lo scacciarono. |
| And the lord of the garden said, What am I to do? I will send my dearly loved son; they may give respect to him. | Allora il padron della vigna disse: Che farò? Manderò il mio diletto figliuolo; forse a lui porteranno rispetto. |
| But when the workmen saw him, they said to one another, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property: let us put him to death and the heritage will be ours. | Ma quando i lavoratori lo videro, fecero tra loro questo ragionamento: Costui è l’erede; uccidiamolo, affinché l’eredità diventi nostra. |
| And driving him out of the garden they put him to death. Now what will the lord do to these workmen? | E cacciatolo fuor dalla vigna, lo uccisero. Che farà loro dunque il padron della vigna? |
| He will come and put them to destruction and give the garden to others. And when he said this, they said, May it not be so. | Verrà e distruggerà que’ lavoratori, e darà la vigna ad altri. Ed essi, udito ciò, dissero: Così non sia! |
| But he, looking on them, said, Is it not in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has become the chief stone of the building? | Ma egli, guardatili in faccia, disse: Che vuol dir dunque questo che è scritto: La pietra che gli edificatori hanno riprovata è quella che è divenuta pietra angolare? |
| Everyone falling on that stone will be broken, but the man on whom the stone comes down will be crushed to dust. | Chiunque cadrà su quella pietra sarà sfracellato; ed ella stritolerà colui sul quale cadrà. |
| And the chief priests and the scribes made attempts to get their hands on him in that very hour; and they were in fear of the people, for they saw that he had made up this story against them. | E gli scribi e i capi sacerdoti cercarono di mettergli le mani addosso in quella stessa ora, ma temettero il popolo; poiché si avvidero bene ch’egli avea detto quella parabola per loro. |
| And they kept watch on him, and sent out secret representatives, who were acting the part of good men, in order that they might get something from his words, on account of which they might give him up to the government and into the power of the ruler. | Ed essendosi messi ad osservarlo, gli mandarono delle spie che simulassero d’esser giusti per coglierlo in parole, affin di darlo in man dell’autorità e del potere del governatore. |
| And they put a question to him, saying, Master, we are certain that your teaching and your words are right, and that you have no respect for a man's position, but you are teaching the true way of God: | E quelli gli fecero una domanda, dicendo: Maestro, noi sappiamo che tu parli e insegni dirittamente, e non hai riguardi personali, ma insegni la via di Dio secondo verità: |
| Is it right for us to make payment of taxes to Caesar or not? | E’ egli lecito a noi pagare il tributo a Cesare o no? |
| But he saw through their trick and said to them, | Ma egli, avvedutosi della loro astuzia, disse loro: |
| Let me see a penny. Whose image and name are on it? And they said, Caesar's. | Mostratemi un denaro; di chi porta l’effigie e l’iscrizione? Ed essi dissero: Di Cesare. |
| And he said, Then give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's. | Ed egli a loro: Rendete dunque a Cesare quel ch’è di Cesare, e a Dio quel ch’è di Dio. |
| And they were not able to get anything from these words before the people: but they were full of wonder at his answer, and said nothing. | Ed essi non poteron coglierlo in parole dinanzi al popolo; e maravigliati della sua risposta, si tacquero. |
| And some of the Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no coming back from the dead; and they said to him, | Poi, accostatisi alcuni dei Sadducei, i quali negano che ci sia risurrezione, lo interrogarono, dicendo: |
| Master, Moses said that if a man's brother comes to his end, having a wife, but no children, his brother is to take the wife, and get a family for his brother. | Maestro, Mosè ci ha scritto che se il fratello di uno muore avendo moglie ma senza figliuoli, il fratello ne prenda la moglie e susciti progenie a suo fratello. |
| Now there were seven brothers, and the first had a wife and came to his end, having no children; | Or v’erano sette fratelli. Il primo prese moglie, e morì senza figliuoli. |
| And the second; | Il secondo pure la sposò; |
| And the third took her; and in the same way, all the seven, without having any children, came to their end. | poi il terzo; e così fu dei sette; non lasciaron figliuoli, e morirono. |
| And last of all, the woman came to her end. | In ultimo, anche la donna morì. |
| When they come back from the dead, whose wife will she be? for all the seven had her. | Nella risurrezione dunque, la donna, di chi di loro sarà moglie? Perché i sette l’hanno avuta per moglie. |
| And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives; | E Gesù disse loro: I figliuoli di questo secolo sposano e sono sposati; |
| But those to whom is given the reward of the world to come, and to come back from the dead, have no wives, and are not married; | ma quelli che saranno reputati degni d’aver parte al secolo avvenire e alla risurrezione dai morti, non sposano e non sono sposati, |
| And death has no more power over them, for they are equal to the angels, and are sons of God, being of those who will come back from the dead. | perché neanche possono più morire, giacché son simili agli angeli e son figliuoli di Dio, essendo figliuoli della risurrezione. |
| But even Moses made it clear that the dead come back to life, saying, in the story of the burning thorn-tree, The Lord, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. | Che poi i morti risuscitino anche Mosè lo dichiarò nel passo del "pruno", quando chiama il Signore l’Iddio d’Abramo, l’Iddio d’Isacco e l’Iddio di Giacobbe. |
| Now he is not the God of the dead but of the living: for all men are living to him. | Or Egli non è un Dio di morti, ma di viventi; poiché per lui vivono tutti. |
| And some of the scribes, in answer to this, said, Master, you have said well. | E alcuni degli scribi, rispondendo, dissero: Maestro, hai detto bene. |
| And they had fear of putting any more questions to him. | E non ardivano più fargli alcuna domanda. |
| And he said to them, Why do they say that the Christ is the son of David? | Ed egli disse loro: Come dicono che il Cristo è figliuolo di Davide? |
| For David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Take your seat at my right hand, | Poiché Davide stesso, nel libro dei Salmi, dice: Il Signore ha detto al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra, |
| Till I put under your feet all those who are against you. | finché io abbia posto i tuoi nemici per sgabello de’ tuoi piedi. |
| David then gives him the name of Lord, so how is it possible for him to be his son? | Davide dunque lo chiama Signore; e com’è egli suo figliuolo? |
| And in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples, | E udendolo tutto il popolo, egli disse a’ suoi discepoli: |
| Keep away from the scribes, whose pleasure it is to go about in long robes, and to have words of respect said to them in the market-places, and to take the chief seats in the Synagogues and the first places at feasts; | Guardatevi dagli scribi, i quali passegian volentieri in lunghe vesti ed amano le salutazioni nelle piazze e i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe e i primi posti nei conviti; |
| Who take the property of widows and before the eyes of men make long prayers; they will get a greater punishment. | essi che divorano le case delle vedove e fanno per apparenza lunghe orazioni. Costoro riceveranno maggior condanna. |
