| Now it came about that on the Sabbath he was going through the fields of grain, and his disciples took the heads of the grain for food, crushing them in their hands. | Or avvenne che in un giorno di sabato egli passava per i seminati; e i suoi discepoli svellevano delle spighe, e sfregandole con le mani, mangiavano. |
| But some of the Pharisees said, Why do you do what it is not right to do on the Sabbath? | Ed alcuni de’ Farisei dissero: Perché fate quel che non è lecito nel giorno del sabato? |
| And Jesus said, Have you not seen in the Writings what David did when he was in need of food, he, and those who were with him; | E Gesù, rispondendo, disse loro: Non avete letto neppure quel che fece Davide, quand’ebbe fame, egli e coloro ch’eran con lui? |
| How he went into the house of God and took for food the holy bread, which only the priests may take, and gave it to those who were with him? | Com’entrò nella casa di Dio, e prese i pani di presentazione, e ne mangiò e ne diede anche a coloro che eran con lui, quantunque non sia lecito mangiarne se non ai soli sacerdoti? |
| And he said, The Son of man is lord even of the Sabbath. | E diceva loro: Il Figliuol dell’uomo è Signore del sabato. |
| And it came about, on another Sabbath, that he went into the Synagogue and was teaching there. And a man was there whose right hand was dead. | Or avvenne in un altro sabato ch’egli entrò nella sinagoga, e si mise ad insegnare. E quivi era un uomo che avea la mano destra secca. |
| And the scribes and Pharisees were watching him to see if he would make him well on the Sabbath, so that they might be able to say something against him. | Or gli scribi e i Farisei l’osservavano per vedere se farebbe una guarigione in giorno di sabato, per trovar di che accusarlo. |
| But he had knowledge of their thoughts; and he said to the man whose hand was dead, Get up and come into the middle. And he got up and came forward. | Ma egli conosceva i loro pensieri, e disse all’uomo che avea la man secca: Lèvati, e sta su nel mezzo! Ed egli, alzatosi, stette su. |
| And Jesus said, I put the question to you, Is it right to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil? to give life or to take it away? | Poi Gesù disse loro: Io domando a voi: E’ lecito, in giorno di sabato, di far del bene o di far del male? di salvare una persona o di ucciderla? |
| And looking round on all of them, he said to him, Put out your hand. And he did so: and his hand was made well. | E girato lo sguardo intorno su tutti loro, disse a quell’uomo: Stendi la mano! Egli fece così, e la sua mano tornò sana. |
| But they were full of wrath, and were talking together about what they might do to Jesus. | Ed essi furon ripieni di furore e discorreano fra loro di quel che potrebbero fare a Gesù. |
| And it came about in those days that he went out to the mountain for prayer; and he was all night in prayer to God. | Or avvenne in que’ giorni ch’egli se ne andò sul monte a pregare, e passò la notte in orazione a Dio. |
| And the day came and, turning to his disciples, he made a selection from among them of twelve, to whom he gave the name of Apostles; | E quando fu giorno, chiamò a sé i suoi discepoli, e ne elesse dodici, ai quali dette anche il nome di apostoli: |
| Simon, to whom he gave the name of Peter, and Andrew, his brother, and James and John and Philip and Bartholomew | Simone, che nominò anche Pietro, e Andrea, fratello di lui, e Giacomo e Giovanni, e Filippo e Bartolommeo, |
| And Matthew and Thomas and James, the son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was named the Zealot, | e Matteo e Toma, e Giacomo d’Alfeo e Simone chiamato Zelota, |
| And Judas, the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, he who was false to him. | e Giuda di Giacomo, e Giuda Iscariot che divenne poi traditore. |
| And he came down with them to a level place, and a great band of his disciples, and a very great number of people from all Judaea and Jerusalem and from the parts of Tyre and Sidon by the sea, came to give hearing to him, and to be made well from their diseases; | E sceso con loro, si fermò sopra un ripiano, insieme con gran folla dei suoi discepoli e gran quantità di popolo da tutta la Giudea e da Gerusalemme e dalla marina di Tiro e di Sidone, |
| And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were made well. | i quali eran venuti per udirlo e per esser guariti delle loro infermità. |
| And all the people were desiring to be touched by him, for power came from him and made them all well. | E quelli che erano tormentati da spiriti immondi, erano guariti; e tutta la moltitudine cercava di toccarlo, perché usciva da lui una virtù che sanava tutti. |
| And turning his eyes to his disciples he said, Happy are you who are poor: for the kingdom of God is yours. | Ed egli, alzati gli occhi verso i suoi discepoli, diceva: Beati voi che siete poveri, perché il Regno di Dio è vostro. |
| Happy are you who are in need of food now: for you will be made full. Happy are you who are weeping now; for you will be glad. | Beati voi che ora avete fame, perché sarete saziati. Beati voi che ora piangete, perché riderete. |
| Happy are you, when men have hate for you, and put you away from among them and say angry words to you, turning away in disgust at your name, because of the Son of man. | Beati voi, quando gli uomini v’avranno odiati, e quando v’avranno sbanditi d’infra loro, e v’avranno vituperati ed avranno ripudiato il vostro nome come malvagio, per cagione del Figliuol dell’uomo. |
| Be glad in that day, and be lifted up for joy, for your reward in heaven will be great: for their fathers did these same things to the prophets. | Rallegratevi in quel giorno e saltate di letizia perché, ecco, il vostro premio è grande ne’ cieli; poiché i padri loro facean lo stesso a’ profeti. |
| But unhappy are you who have wealth: for you have been comforted now. | Ma guai a voi, ricchi, perché avete già la vostra consolazione. |
| Unhappy are you who are full of food now: for you will be in need. Unhappy are you who are laughing now: for you will be crying in sorrow. | Guai a voi che siete ora satolli, perché avrete fame. Guai a voi che ora ridete, perché farete cordoglio piangerete. |
| Unhappy are you when all men give you their approval: for so their fathers did to the false prophets. | Guai a voi quando tutti gli uomini diran bene di voi, perché i padri loro facean lo stesso coi falsi profeti. |
| But I say to you who give ear to me, Have love for those who are against you, do good to those who have hate for you, | Ma a voi che ascoltate, io dico: Amate i vostri nemici; fate del bene a quelli che v’odiano; |
| Give blessing to those who give you curses, say prayers for those who are cruel to you. | benedite quelli che vi maledicono, pregate per quelli che v’oltraggiano. |
| If a man gives you a blow on one side of your face, then let the other side be turned to him; from him who takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe. | A chi ti percuote su una guancia, porgigli anche l’altra; e a chi ti toglie il mantello non impedire di prenderti anche la tunica. |
| Give to everyone who comes with a request, and if a man takes away your property, make no attempt to get it back again. | Da’ a chiunque ti chiede; e a chi ti toglie il tuo, non glielo ridomandare. |
| Do to others as you would have them do to you. | E come volete che gli uomini facciano a voi, fate voi pure a loro. |
| If you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? for even sinners have love for those who have love for them. | E se amate quelli che vi amano, qual grazia ve ne viene? poiché anche i peccatori amano quelli che li amano. |
| And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is it to you? for even sinners do the same. | E se fate del bene a quelli che vi fanno del bene, qual grazia ve ne viene? anche i peccatori fanno lo stesso. |
| And if you let those have the use of your money, from whom you are hoping to get it back, what credit is it to you? even sinners do so to sinners, hoping to get back as much as they gave. | E se prestate a quelli dai quali sperate ricevere, qual grazia ne avete? Anche i peccatori prestano ai peccatori per riceverne altrettanto. |
| But be loving to those who are against you and do them good, and give them your money, not giving up hope, and your reward will be great and you will be the sons of the Most High: for he is kind to evil men, and to those who have hard hearts. | Ma amate i vostri nemici, e fate del bene e prestate senza sperarne alcun che, e il vostro premio sarà grande e sarete figliuoli dell’Altissimo; poich’Egli è benigno verso gl’ingrati e malvagi. |
| Be full of pity, even as your Father is full of pity. | Siate misericordiosi com’è misericordioso il Padre vostro. |
| Be not judges of others, and you will not be judged: do not give punishment to others, and you will not get punishment yourselves: make others free, and you will be made free: | Non giudicate, e non sarete giudicati; non condannate, e non sarete condannati; perdonate, e vi sarà perdonato. |
| Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, crushed down, full and running over, they will give to you. For in the same measure as you give, it will be given to you again. | Date, e vi sarà dato: vi sarà versata in seno buona misura, pigiata, scossa, traboccante; perché con la misura onde misurate, sarà rimisurato a voi. |
| And he gave them teaching in the form of a story, saying, Is it possible for one blind man to be guide to another? will they not go falling together into a hole? | Poi disse loro anche una parabola: Un cieco può egli guidare un cieco? Non cadranno tutti e due nella fossa? |
| The disciple is not greater than his master, but everyone whose learning is complete will be like his master. | Un discepolo non è da più del maestro; ma ogni discepolo perfetto sarà come il suo maestro. |
| And why do you take note of the grain of dust in your brother's eye, but take no note of the bit of wood which is in your eye? | Or perché guardi tu il bruscolo che è nell’occhio del tuo fratello, mentre non iscorgi la trave che è nell’occhio tuo proprio? |
| How will you say to your brother, Brother, let me take the grain of dust out of your eye, when you yourself do not see the bit of wood in your eye? O false one! first take the wood out of your eye and then you will see clearly to take the dust out of your brother's eye. | Come puoi dire al tuo fratello: Fratello, lascia ch’io ti tragga il bruscolo che hai nell’occhio, mentre tu stesso non vedi la trave ch’è nell’occhio tuo? Ipocrita, trai prima dall’occhio tuo la trave, e allora ci vedrai bene per trarre il bruscolo che è nell’occhio del tuo fratello. |
| For no good tree gives bad fruit, and no bad tree gives good fruit. | Non v’è infatti albero buono che faccia frutto cattivo, né v’è albero cattivo che faccia frutto buono; |
| For every tree is judged by its fruit. Men do not get figs from thorns, or grapes from blackberry plants. | poiché ogni albero si riconosce dal suo proprio frutto; perché non si colgon fichi dalle spine, ne si vendemmia uva dal pruno. |
| The good man, out of the good store of his heart, gives good things; and the evil man, out of his evil store, gives evil: for out of the full store of the heart come the words of the mouth. | L’uomo buono dal buon tesoro del suo cuore reca fuori il bene; e l’uomo malvagio, dal malvagio tesoro reca fuori il male; poiché dall’abbondanza del cuore parla la sua bocca. |
| Why do you say to me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? | Perché mi chiamate Signore, Signore, e non fate quel che dico? |
| Everyone who comes to me and gives ear to my words and does them, I will make clear to you what he is like: | Chiunque viene a me ed ascolta le mie parole e le mette in pratica, io vi mostrerò a chi somiglia. |
| He is like a man building a house, who went deep and put the base of it on a rock; and when the water came up and the river was driving against that house, it was not moved, because the building was good. | Somiglia ad un uomo il quale, edificando una casa, ha scavato e scavato profondo, ed ha posto il fondamento sulla roccia; e venuta una piena, la fiumana ha investito quella casa e non ha potuto scrollarla per che era stata edificata bene. |
| But he who gives hearing, without doing, is like a man building a house on the earth without a base for it; and when the force of the river came against it, straight away it came down; and the destruction of that house was great. | Ma chi ha udito e non ha messo in pratica, somiglia ad un uomo che ha edificato una casa sulla terra, senza fondamento; la fiumana l’ha investita, e subito è crollata; e la ruina di quella casa è stata grande. |
