| On that day there was a reading from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and they saw that it said in the book that no Ammonite or Moabite might ever come into the meeting of God; | In quel tempo si lesse in presenza del popolo il libro di Mosè, e vi si trovò scritto che l’Ammonita e il Moabita non debbono mai in perpetuo entrare nella raunanza di Dio, |
| Because they did not give the children of Israel bread and water when they came to them, but got Balaam to put a curse on them: though the curse was turned into a blessing by our God. | perché non eran venuti incontro ai figliuoli d’Israele con del pane e dell’acqua, e perché aveano prezzolato a loro danno Balaam, per maledirli; ma il nostro Iddio convertì la maledizione in benedizione. |
| So after hearing the law, they took out of Israel all the mixed people. | E quando il popolo ebbe udita la legge, separò da Israele ogni elemento straniero. |
| Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who had been placed over the rooms of the house of our God, being a friend of Tobiah, | Or prima di questo, il sacerdote Eliascib, ch’era preposto alle camere della casa del nostro Dio ed era parente di Tobia, |
| Had made ready for him a great room, where at one time they kept the meal offerings, the perfume, and the vessels and the tenths of the grain and wine and oil which were given by order to the Levites and the music-makers and the door-keepers, and the lifted offerings for the priests. | avea messo a disposizione di quest’ultimo una camera grande là dove, prima d’allora, si riponevano le offerte, l’incenso, gli utensili, la decima del grano, del vino e dell’olio, tutto ciò che spettava per legge ai Leviti, ai cantori, ai portinai, e la parte che se ne prelevava per i sacerdoti. |
| But all this time I was not at Jerusalem: for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I went to the king; and after some days, I got the king to let me go, | Ma quando si faceva tutto questo, io non ero a Gerusalemme; perché l’anno trentaduesimo di Artaserse, re di Babilonia, ero tornato presso il re; e in capo a qualche tempo avendo ottenuto un congedo dal re, |
| And I came to Jerusalem; and it was clear to me what evil Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in making ready for him a room in the buildings of the house of God. | tornai a Gerusalemme, e m’accorsi del male che Eliascib avea fatto per amor di Tobia, mettendo a sua disposizione una camera nei cortili della casa di Dio. |
| And it was evil in my eyes: so I had all Tobiah's things put out of the room. | La cosa mi dispiacque fortemente, e feci gettare fuori dalla camera tutte le masserizie appartenenti a Tobia; |
| Then I gave orders, and they made the rooms clean: and I put back in them the vessels of the house of God, with the meal offerings and the perfume. | poi ordinai che si purificassero quelle camere, e vi feci ricollocare gli utensili della casa di Dio, le offerte e l’incenso. |
| And I saw that the Levites had not been given what was needed for their support; so that the Levites and the music-makers, who did the work, had gone away, everyone to his field. | Seppi pure che le porzioni dovute ai Leviti non erano state date, e che i Leviti e i cantori, incaricati del servizio, se n’eran fuggiti, ciascuno alla sua terra. |
| Then I made protests to the chiefs, and said, Why has the house of God been given up? And I got them together and put them in their places. | E io censurai i magistrati, e dissi loro: "Perché la casa di Dio è ella stata abbandonata?" Poi radunai i Leviti e i cantori e li ristabilii nei loro uffici. |
| Then all Judah came with the tenth part of the grain and wine and oil and put it into the store-houses. | Allora tutto Giuda portò nei magazzini le decime del frumento, del vino e dell’olio; |
| And I made controllers over the store-houses, Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and with them was Hanan, the son of Zaccur the son of Mattaniah: they were taken to be true men and their business was the distribution of these things to their brothers. | e affidai la sorveglianza dei magazzini al sacerdote Scelemia, allo scriba Tsadok, e a Pedaia uno dei Leviti; ai quali aggiunsi Hanan, figliuolo di Zaccur, figliuolo di Mattania, perché erano reputati uomini fedeli. Il loro ufficio era di fare le repartizioni tra i loro fratelli. |
| Keep me in mind, O my God, in connection with this, and do not let the good which I have done for the house of my God and its worship go from your memory completely. | Ricordati per questo di me, o Dio mio, e non cancellare le opere pie che ho fatte per la casa del mio Dio e per il suo servizio! |
| In those days, I saw in Judah some who were crushing grapes on the Sabbath, and getting in grain and putting it on asses; as well as wine and grapes and figs and all sorts of goods which they took into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day: and I gave witness against them on the day when they were marketing food. | In que’ giorni osservai in Giuda di quelli che calcavano l’uva negli strettoi in giorno di sabato, altri che portavano, caricandolo sugli asini, del grano ed anche del vino, dell’uva, dei fichi, e ogni sorta di cose, che facean venire a Gerusalemme in giorno di sabato; ed io li rimproverai a motivo del giorno in cui vendevano le loro derrate. |
| And there were men of Tyre there, who came with fish and all sorts of goods, trading with the children of Judah and in Jerusalem on the Sabbath. | C’erano anche dei Siri, stabiliti a Gerusalemme, che portavano del pesce e ogni sorta di cose, e le vendevano ai figliuoli di Giuda in giorni di sabato, e in Gerusalemme. |
| Then I made protests to the chiefs of Judah, and said to them, What is this evil which you are doing, not keeping the Sabbath day holy? | Allora io censurai i notabili di Giuda, e dissi loro: "Che vuol dire questa mala azione che fate, profanando il giorno del sabato? |
| Did not your fathers do the same, and did not our God send all this evil on us and on this town? but you are causing more wrath to come on Israel by not keeping the Sabbath holy. | I nostri padri non fecero essi così? e l’Iddio nostro fece, per questo, cader su noi e su questa città tutti questi mali. E voi accrescete l’ira ardente contro ad Israele, profanando il sabato!" |
| And so, when the streets of Jerusalem were getting dark before the Sabbath, I gave orders for the doors to be shut and not to be open again till after the Sabbath: and I put some of my servants by the door so that nothing might be taken in on the Sabbath day. | E non appena le porte di Gerusalemme cominciarono ad esser nell’ombra, prima del sabato, io ordinai che le porte fossero chiuse, e che non si riaprissero fino a dopo il sabato; e collocai alcuni de’ miei servi alle porte, affinché nessun carico entrasse in città durante il sabato. |
| So the traders in all sorts of goods took their night's rest outside Jerusalem once or twice. | Così i mercanti e i venditori d’ogni sorta di cose una o due volte passarono la notte fuori di Gerusalemme. |
| Then I gave witness against them and said, Why are you waiting all night by the wall? if you do so again I will have you taken prisoners. From that time they did not come again on the Sabbath. | Allora io li rimproverai, e dissi loro: "Perché passate voi la notte davanti alle mura? Se lo rifate, vi farò arrestare". Da quel momento non vennero più il sabato. |
| And I gave the Levites orders to make themselves clean and come and keep the doors and make the Sabbath holy. Keep this in mind to my credit, O my God, and have mercy on me, for great is your mercy. | Io ordinai anche ai Leviti che si purificassero e venissero a custodire le porte per santificare il giorno del sabato. Anche per questo ricordati di me, o mio Dio, e abbi pietà di me secondo la grandezza della tua misericordia! |
| And in those days I saw the Jews who were married to women of Ashdod and Ammon and Moab: | In que’ giorni vidi pure dei Giudei che s’erano ammogliati con donne di Ashdod, di Ammon e di Moab; |
| And their children were talking half in the language of Ashdod; they had no knowledge of the Jews' language, but made use of the language of the two peoples. | e la metà dei loro figliuoli parlava l’asdodeo, ma non sapeva parlare la lingua de’ Giudei; conosceva soltanto la lingua di questo o quest’altro popolo. |
| And I took up the cause against them, cursing them and giving blows to some of them and pulling out their hair; and I made them take an oath by God, saying, You are not to give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. | E io li censurai, li maledissi, ne picchiai alcuni, strappai loro i capelli, e li feci giurare nel nome di Dio che non darebbero le loro figliuole ai figliuoli di costoro, e non prenderebbero le figliuole di coloro per i loro figliuoli né per loro stessi. |
| Was it not in these things that Solomon, king of Israel, did wrong? among a number of nations there was no king like him, and he was dear to his God, and God made him king over all Israel: but even he was made to do evil by strange women. | E dissi: "Salomone, re d’Israele, non peccò egli forse appunto in questo? E, certo, fra le molte nazioni, non ci fu re simile a lui; era amato dal suo Dio, e Dio l’avea fatto re di tutto Israele; nondimeno, le donne straniere fecero peccare anche lui. |
| Are we then without protest to let you do all this great evil, sinning against our God by taking strange women for your wives? | E s’avrà egli a dir di voi che commettete questo gran male, che siete infedeli al nostro Dio, prendendo mogli straniere?" |
| And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib, the chief priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: so I sent him away from me. | Uno de’ figliuoli di Joiada, figliuolo di Eliascib, il sommo sacerdote, era genero di Samballat, lo Horonita; e io lo cacciai lungi da me. |
| Keep them in mind, O my God, because they have put shame on the priests' name and on the agreement of the priests and the Levites. | Ricordati di loro, o mio Dio, poiché hanno contaminato il sacerdozio e il patto fermato dal sacerdozio e dai Leviti! |
| So I made them clean from all strange people, and had regular watches fixed for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work; | Così purificai il popolo da ogni elemento straniero, e ristabilii i servizi vari de’ sacerdoti e de’ Leviti, assegnando a ciascuno il suo lavoro. |
| And for the wood offering, at fixed times, and for the first fruits. Keep me in mind, O my God, for good. | Ordinai pure il da farsi circa l’offerta delle legna ai tempi stabiliti, e circa le primizie. Ricordati di me, mio Dio, per farmi del bene! |
