| Why do you keep far away, O Lord? why are you not to be seen in times of trouble? | O Eterno, perché te ne stai lontano? Perché ti nascondi in tempi di distretta? |
| The evil-doer in his pride is cruel to the poor; let him be taken by the tricks of his invention. | L’empio nella sua superbia perseguita con furore i miseri; essi rimangon presi nelle macchinazioni che gli empi hanno ordite; |
| For the evil-doer is lifted up because of the purpose of his heart, and he whose mind is fixed on wealth is turned away from the Lord, saying evil against him. | poiché l’empio si gloria delle brame dell’anima sua, benedice il rapace e disprezza l’Eterno. |
| The evil-doer in his pride says, God will not make a search. All his thoughts are, There is no God. | L’empio, nell’alterezza della sua faccia, dice: l’Eterno non farà inchieste. Tutti i suoi pensieri sono: Non c’è Dio! |
| His ways are ever fixed; your decisions are higher than he may see: as for his haters, they are as nothing to him. | Le sue vie son prospere in ogni tempo; cosa troppo alta per lui sono i tuoi giudizi; egli soffia contro tutti i suoi nemici. |
| He has said in his heart, I will not be moved: through all generations I will never be in trouble. | Egli dice nel suo cuore: Non sarò mai smosso; d’età in età non m’accadrà male alcuno. |
| His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and false words: under his tongue are evil purposes and dark thoughts. | La sua bocca è piena di esecrazione, di frodi, e di oppressione; sotto la sua lingua v’è malizia ed iniquità. |
| He is waiting in the dark places of the towns: in the secret places he puts to death those who have done no wrong: his eyes are secretly turned against the poor. | Egli sta negli agguati de’ villaggi; uccide l’innocente in luoghi nascosti; i suoi occhi spiano il meschino. |
| He keeps himself in a secret place like a lion in his hole, waiting to put his hands on the poor man, and pulling him into his net. | Sta in agguato nel suo nascondiglio come un leone nella sua spelonca; sta in agguato per sorprendere il misero; egli sorprende il misero traendolo nella sua rete. |
| The upright are crushed and made low, and the feeble are overcome by his strong ones. | Se ne sta quatto e chino, ed i meschini cadono tra le sue unghie. |
| He says in his heart, God has no memory of me: his face is turned away; he will never see it. | Egli dice nel cuor suo: Iddio dimentica, nasconde la sua faccia, mai lo vedrà. |
| Up! O Lord; let your hand be lifted: give thought to the poor. | Lèvati, o Eterno! o Dio, alza la mano! Non dimenticare i miseri. |
| Why has the evil-doer a low opinion of God, saying in his heart, You will not make search for it? | Perché l’empio disprezza Iddio? perché dice in cuor suo: Non ne farai ricerca? |
| You have seen it; for your eyes are on sorrow and grief, to take it into your hand: the poor man puts his faith in you; you have been the helper of the child who has no father. | Tu l’hai pur veduto; poiché tu riguardi ai travagli ed alle pene per prender la cosa in mano. A te si abbandona il meschino; tu sei l’aiutator dell’orfano. |
| Let the arm of the sinner and the evil-doer be broken; go on searching for his sin till there is no more. | Fiacca il braccio dell’empio, cerca l’empietà del malvagio finché tu non ne trovi più. |
| The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations are gone from his land. | L’Eterno è re in sempiterno; le nazioni sono state sterminate dalla sua terra. |
| Lord, you have given ear to the prayer of the poor: you will make strong their hearts, you will give them a hearing: | O Eterno, tu esaudisci il desiderio degli umili; tu raffermerai il cuor loro, inclinerai le orecchie tue |
| To give decision for the child without a father and for the broken-hearted, so that the man of the earth may no longer be feared. | per far ragione all’orfano e all’oppresso, onde l’uomo, che è della terra, cessi dall’incutere spavento. |
