| To the chief music-maker. Of the sons of Korah Maschil.It has come to our ears, O God, our fathers have given us the story, of the works which you did in their days, in the old times, | Al capo de’ musici. Dei figliuoli di Core. Cantico. O Dio, noi abbiamo udito coi nostri orecchi, i nostri padri ci hanno raccontato l’opera che compisti ai loro giorni, ai giorni antichi. |
| Uprooting the nations with your hand, and planting our fathers in their place; cutting down the nations, but increasing the growth of your people. | Tu con la tua mano scacciasti le nazioni e stabilisti i nostri padri; distruggesti dei popoli per estender loro. |
| For they did not make the land theirs by their swords, and it was not their arms which kept them safe; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your face, because you had pleasure in them. | Poiché essi non conquistarono il paese con la loro spada, né fu il loro braccio che li salvò, ma la tua destra, il tuo braccio, la luce del tuo volto, perché li gradivi. |
| You are my King and my God; ordering salvation for Jacob. | Tu sei il mio re, o Dio, ordina la salvezza di Giacobbe! |
| Through you will we overcome our haters; by your name will they be crushed under our feet who are violent against us. | Con te noi abbatteremo i nostri nemici, nel tuo nome calpesteremo quelli che si levan contro a noi. |
| I will not put faith in my bow, my sword will not be my salvation. | Poiché non è nel mio arco che io confido, e non è la mia spada che mi salverà; |
| But it is you who have been our saviour from those who were against us, and have put to shame those who had hate for us. | ma sei tu che ci salvi dai nostri nemici e rendi confusi quelli che ci odiano. |
| Our pride is in God at all times, to his name we give praise for ever. (Selah.) | In Dio noi ci glorieremo, ogni giorno e celebreremo il tuo nome in perpetuo. Sela. |
| But now you have sent us away from you, and put us to shame; you do not go out with our armies. | Ma ora ci hai reietti e coperti d’onta, e non esci più coi nostri eserciti. |
| Because of this we are turned back by the attacker: those who have hate for us take our goods for themselves. | Tu ci fai voltar le spalle davanti al nemico, e quelli che ci odiano ci depredano. |
| You have made us like sheep which are taken for meat; we are put to flight among the nations. | Ci hai dati via come pecore da mangiare, e ci hai dispersi fra le nazioni. |
| You let your people go for nothing; your wealth is not increased by their price. | Tu vendi il tuo popolo per un nulla, e non ti sei tenuto alto nel fissarne il prezzo. |
| You have made us to be looked down on by our neighbours, we are laughed at and shamed by those who are round about us. | Tu ci fai oggetto d’obbrobrio per i nostri vicini, di beffe e di scherno per quelli che ci stan d’intorno. |
| Our name is a word of shame among the nations, a sign for the shaking of heads among the peoples. | Tu ci rendi la favola delle nazioni, e i popoli scuotono il capo, quando si tratta di noi. |
| My downfall is ever before me, and I am covered with the shame of my face; | Tuttodì l’onta mia mi sta dinanzi, e la vergogna mi cuopre la faccia |
| Because of the voice of him who says sharp and bitter words; because of the hater and him who is the instrument of punishment. | all’udire chi mi vitupera e m’oltraggia, al vedere il nemico ed il vendicativo. |
| All this has come on us, but still we have kept you in our memory; and we have not been false to your word. | Tutto questo ci è avvenuto. Eppure non t’abbiam dimenticato e non siamo stati infedeli al tuo patto. |
| Our hearts have not gone back, and our steps have not been turned out of your way; | Il nostro cuore non si è rivolto indietro, e i nostri passi non si sono sviati dal tuo sentiero, |
| Though you have let us be crushed in the place of jackals, though we are covered with darkest shade. | perché tu ci avessi a fiaccare cacciandoci in dimore di sciacalli, perché tu avessi a stender su noi l’ombra della morte. |
| If the name of our God has gone out of our minds, or if our hands have been stretched out to a strange god, | Se avessimo dimenticato il nome del nostro Dio, e avessimo teso le mani verso un dio straniero, |
| Will not God make search for it? for he sees the secrets of the heart. | Dio non l’avrebbe egli scoperto? Poich’egli conosce i segreti del cuore. |
| Truly, because of you we are put to death every day; we are numbered like sheep for destruction. | Anzi è per cagion tua che siamo ogni dì messi a morte, e reputati come pecore da macello. |
| Why are you sleeping, O Lord? awake! and come to our help, do not give us up for ever. | Risvegliati! Perché dormi, o Signore? Destati, non rigettarci in perpetuo! |
| Why is your face covered, and why do you give no thought to our trouble and our cruel fate? | Perché nascondi la tua faccia e dimentichi la nostra afflizione e la nostra oppressione? |
| For our souls are crushed down to the dust: our bodies are stretched out on the earth. | Poiché l’anima nostra è abbattuta nella polvere; il nostro corpo aderisce alla terra. |
| Up! and come to our help, and give us salvation because of your mercy. | Lèvati in nostro aiuto, e liberaci, per amor della tua benignità. |
