| Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had made to come back from the dead. | Y JESUS, seis días antes de la Pascua, vino á Bethania, donde estaba Lázaro, que había sido muerto, al cual había resucitado de los muertos. |
| So they made him a meal there, and he was waited on by Martha, and Lazarus was among those who were seated with him at table. | E hiciéronle allí una cena y Marta servía, y Lázaro era uno de los que estaban sentados á la mesa juntamente con él. |
| Then Mary, taking a pound of perfumed oil of great value, put it on the feet of Jesus and made them dry with her hair: and the house became full of the smell of the perfume. | Entonces María tomó una libra de ungüento de nardo líquido de mucho precio, y ungió los pies de Jesús, y limpió sus pies con sus cabellos: y la casa se llenó del olor del ungüento. |
| But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was to give him up), said, | Y dijo uno de sus discípulos, Judas Iscariote, hijo de Simón, el que le había de entregar: |
| Why was not this perfume traded for three hundred pence, and the money given to the poor? | ¿Por qué no se ha vendido este ungüento por trescientos dineros, y se dió á los pobres? |
| (He said this, not because he had any love for the poor; but because he was a thief, and, having the money-bag, took for himself what was put into it.) | Mas dijo esto, no por el cuidado que él tenía de los pobres: sino porque era ladrón, y tenía la bolsa, y traía lo que se echaba en ella. |
| Then Jesus said, Let her be. Let her keep what she has for the day of my death. | Entonces Jesús dijo: Déjala; para el día de mi sepultura ha guardado esto; |
| The poor you have ever with you, but me you have not for ever. | Porque á los pobres siempre los tenéis con vosotros, mas á mí no siempre me tenéis. |
| Then a great number of the Jews had news that he was there: and they came, not only because of Jesus, but so that they might see Lazarus who had been dead and to whom he had given life. | Entonces mucha gente de los Judíos entendió que él estaba allí; y vinieron no solamente por causa de Jesús, mas también por ver á Lázaro, al cual había resucitado de los muertos. |
| Now there was talk among the chief priests of putting Lazarus to death; | Consultaron asimismo los príncipes de los sacerdotes, de matar también á Lázaro; |
| For because of him a great number of the Jews went away and had belief in Jesus. | Porque muchos de los Judíos iban y creían en Jesús por causa de él. |
| The day after, a great number of people who were there for the feast, when they had the news that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, | El siguiente día, mucha gente que había venido á la fiesta, como oyeron que Jesús venía á Jerusalem, |
| Took branches of palm-trees and went out to him, crying, A blessing on him who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel! | Tomaron ramos de palmas, y salieron á recibirle, y clamaban: ¡Hosanna, Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor, el Rey de Israel! |
| And Jesus saw a young ass and took his seat on it; as the Writings say, | Y halló Jesús un asnillo, y se sentó sobre él, como está escrito: |
| Have no fear, daughter of Zion: see your King is coming, seated on a young ass. | No temas, hija de Sión: he aquí tu Rey viene, sentado sobre un pollino de asna. |
| (These things were not clear to his disciples at first: but when Jesus had been lifted up into his glory, then it came to their minds that these things in the Writings were about him and that they had been done to him.) | Estas cosas no las entendieron sus discípulos de primero: empero cuando Jesús fué glorificado, entonces se acordaron de que estas cosas estaban escritas de él, y que le hicieron estas cosas. |
| Now the people who were with him when his voice came to Lazarus in the place of the dead, and gave him life again, had been talking about it. | Y la gente que estaba con él, daba testimonio de cuando llamó á Lázaro del sepulcro, y le resucitó de los muertos. |
| And that was the reason the people went out to him, because it had come to their ears that he had done this sign. | Por lo cual también había venido la gente á recibirle, porque había oído que él había hecho esta señal; |
| Then the Pharisees said one to another, You see, you are unable to do anything: the world has gone after him. | Mas los Fariseos dijeron entre sí: ¿Veis que nada aprovecháis? he aquí, el mundo se va tras de él. |
| Now there were some Greeks among the people who had come up to give worship at the feast: | Y había ciertos Griegos de los que habían subido á adorar en la fiesta: |
| They came to Philip, who was of Beth-saida in Galilee, and made a request, saying, Sir, we have a desire to see Jesus. | Estos pues, se llegaron á Felipe, que era de Bethsaida de Galilea, y rogáronle, diciendo: Señor, querríamos ver á Jesús. |
| Philip went and gave word of it to Andrew; and Andrew went with Philip to Jesus. | Vino Felipe, y díjolo á Andrés: Andrés entonces, y Felipe, lo dicen á Jesús. |
| And Jesus said to them in answer, The hour of the glory of the Son of man has come. | Entonces Jesús les respondió, diciendo: La hora viene en que el Hijo del hombre ha de ser glorificado. |
| Truly I say to you, If a seed of grain does not go into the earth and come to an end, it is still a seed and no more; but through its death it gives much fruit. | De cierto, de cierto os digo, que si el grano de trigo no cae en la tierra y muere, él solo queda; mas si muriere, mucho fruto lleva. |
| He who is in love with life will have it taken from him; and he who has no care for his life in this world will keep it for ever and ever. | El que ama su vida, la perderá; y el que aborrece su vida en este mundo, para vida eterna la guardará. |
| If any man is my servant, let him come after me; and where I am, there will my servant be. If any man becomes my servant, my Father will give him honour. | Si alguno me sirve, sígame: y donde yo estuviere, allí también estará mi servidor. Si alguno me sirviere, mi Padre le honrará. |
| Now is my soul troubled; and what am I to say? Father, keep me from this hour. No: for this purpose have I come to this hour. | Ahora está turbada mi alma; ¿y qué diré? Padre, sálvame de esta hora. Mas por esto he venido en esta hora. |
| Father, give glory to your name. Then there came a voice out of heaven, saying, I have given it glory, and I will give it glory again. | Padre, glorifica tu nombre. Entonces vino una voz del cielo: Y lo he glorificado, y lo glorificaré otra vez. |
| Hearing the sound, a number of people who were there said that it was thunder: others said, An angel was talking to him. | Y la gente que estaba presente, y había oído, decía que había sido trueno. Otros decían: Angel le ha hablado. |
| Jesus said in answer, This voice came not for me but for you. | Respondió Jesús, y dijo: No ha venido esta voz por mi causa, mas por causa de vosotros. |
| Now is this world to be judged: now will the ruler of this world be sent out. | Ahora es el juicio de este mundo: ahora el príncipe de este mundo será echado fuera. |
| And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will make all men come to me. | Y yo, si fuere levantado de la tierra, á todos traeré á mí mismo. |
| (This he said, pointing to the sort of death he would have.) | Y esto decía dando á entender de qué muerte había de morir. |
| Then the people in answer said to him, The law says that the Christ will have life without end: how say you then that it is necessary for the Son of man to be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? | Respondióle la gente: Nosotros hemos oído de la ley, que el Cristo permanece para siempre: ¿cómo pues dices tú: Conviene que el Hijo del hombre sea levantado? ¿Quién es este Hijo del hombre? |
| Jesus said to them, For a little time longer the light will be among you; while you have the light go on walking in it, so that the dark may not overtake you: one walking in the dark has no knowledge of where he is going. | Entonces Jesús les dice: Aun por un poco estará la luz entre vosotros: andad entre tanto que tenéis luz, porque no os sorprendan las tinieblas; porque el que anda en tinieblas, no sabe dónde va. |
| In so far as you have the light, put your faith in the light so that you may become sons of light. With these words Jesus went away and for a time was not seen again by them. | Entre tanto que tenéis la luz, creed en la luz, para que seáis hijos de luz. Estas cosas habló Jesús, y fuése, y escondióse de ellos. |
| But though he had done such a number of signs before them, they still had no belief in him: | Empero habiendo hecho delante de ellos tantas señales, no creían en él. |
| So that the words of the prophet Isaiah might come true, when he said, Lord, who has any belief in our preaching? and the arm of the Lord, to whom has it been unveiled? | Para que se cumpliese el dicho que dijo el profeta Isaías: ¿Señor, quién ha creído á nuestro dicho? ¿Y el brazo del Señor, á quién es revelado? |
| For this reason they were unable to have belief, because Isaiah said again, | Por esto no podían creer, porque otra vez dijo Isaías: |
| He has made their eyes blind, and their hearts hard; for fear that they might see with their eyes and get knowledge with their hearts, and be changed, and I might make them well. | Cegó los ojos de ellos, y endureció su corazón; Porque no vean con los ojos, y entiendan de corazón, Y se conviertan, Y yo los sane. |
| (Isaiah said these words because he saw his glory. His words were about him.) | Estas cosas dijo Isaías cuando vió su gloria, y habló de él. |
| However, a number even of the rulers had belief in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not say so openly for fear that they might be shut out from the Synagogue: | Con todo eso, aun de los príncipes, muchos creyeron en él; mas por causa de los Fariseos no lo confesaban, por no ser echados de la sinagoga. |
| For the praise of men was dearer to them than the approval of God. | Porque amaban más la gloria de los hombres que la gloria de Dios. |
| Then Jesus said with a loud voice, He who has faith in me, has faith not in me, but in him who sent me. | Mas Jesús clamó y dijo: El que cree en mí, no cree en mí, sino en el que me envió; |
| And he who sees me, sees him who sent me. | Y el que me ve, ve al que me envió. |
| I have come as a light into the world, so that no one who has faith in me will go on living in the dark. | Yo la luz he venido al mundo, para que todo aquel que cree en mí no permanezca en tinieblas. |
| And if any man gives ear to my words and does not keep them, I am not his judge: I did not come to be judge of the world but to give salvation to the world. | Y el que oyere mis palabras, y no las creyere, yo no le juzgo; porque no he venido á juzgar al mundo, sino á salvar al mundo. |
| He who puts me on one side and does not take my words to heart, is not without a judge: the word which I have said will be his judge on the last day. | El que me desecha, y no recibe mis palabras, tiene quien le juzgue: la palabra que he hablado, ella le juzgará en el día postrero. |
| For I have not said it on my authority, but the Father who sent me gave me orders what to say and how to say it. | Porque yo no he hablado de mí mismo; mas el Padre que me envió, él me dió mandamiento de lo que he de decir, y de lo que he de hablar. |
| And I have knowledge that his order is eternal life: so that the things which I say, I say them even as the Father says them to me. | Y sé que su mandamiento es vida eterna: así que, lo que yo hablo, como el Padre me lo ha dicho, así hablo. |
