| Like snow in summer and rain when the grain is being cut, so honour is not natural for the foolish. | COMO la nieve en el verano, y la lluvia en la siega, Así conviene al necio la honra. |
| As the sparrow in her wandering and the swallow in her flight, so the curse does not come without a cause. | Como el gorrión en su vagar, y como la golondrina en su vuelo, Así la maldición sin causa nunca vendrá. |
| A whip for the horse, a mouth-bit for the ass, and a rod for the back of the foolish. | El látigo para el caballo, y el cabestro para el asno, Y la vara para la espalda del necio. |
| Do not give to the foolish man a foolish answer, or you will be like him. | Nunca respondas al necio en conformidad á su necedad, Para que no seas tú también como él. |
| Give a foolish man a foolish answer, or he will seem wise to himself. | Responde al necio según su necedad, Porque no se estime sabio en su opinión. |
| He who sends news by the hand of a foolish man is cutting off his feet and drinking in damage. | Como el que se corta los pies y bebe su daño, Así es el que envía algo por mano de un necio. |
| The legs of one who has no power of walking are hanging loose; so is a wise saying in the mouth of the foolish. | Alzar las piernas del cojo. Así es el proverbio en la boca del necio. |
| Giving honour to a foolish man is like attempting to keep a stone fixed in a cord. | Como quien liga la piedra en la honda, Así hace el que al necio da honra. |
| Like a thorn which goes up into the hand of a man overcome by drink, so is a wise saying in the mouth of a foolish man. | Espinas hincadas en mano del embriagado, Tal es el proverbio en la boca de los necios. |
| Like an archer wounding all who go by, is a foolish man overcome by drink. | El grande cría todas las cosas; y da la paga al insensato, Y la da á los transgresores. |
| Like a dog going back to the food which he has not been able to keep down, is the foolish man doing his foolish acts over again. | Como perro que vuelve á su vómito, Así el necio que repite su necedad. |
| Have you seen a man who seems to himself to be wise? There is more hope for the foolish than for him. | ¿Has visto hombre sabio en su opinión? Más esperanza hay del necio que de él. |
| The hater of work says, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. | Dice el perezoso: El león está en el camino; El león está en las calles. |
| A door is turned on its pillar, and the hater of work on his bed. | Las puertas se revuelven en sus quicios: Así el perezoso en su cama. |
| The hater of work puts his hand deep into the basin: lifting it again to his mouth is a weariness to him. | Esconde el perezoso su mano en el seno; Cánsase de tornarla á su boca. |
| The hater of work seems to himself wiser than seven men who are able to give an answer with good sense. | A su ver es el perezoso más sabio Que siete que le den consejo. |
| He who gets mixed up in a fight which is not his business, is like one who takes a dog by the ears while it is going by. | El que pasando se deja llevar de la ira en pleito ajeno, Es como el que toma al perro por las orejas. |
| As one who is off his head sends about flaming sticks and arrows of death, | Como el que enloquece, y echa llamas Y saetas y muerte, |
| So is the man who gets the better of his neighbour by deceit, and says, Am I not doing so in sport? | Tal es el hombre que daña á su amigo, Y dice: Ciertamente me chanceaba. |
| Without wood, the fire goes out; and where there is no secret talk, argument is ended. | Sin leña se apaga el fuego: Y donde no hay chismoso, cesa la contienda. |
| Like breath on coals and wood on fire, so a man given to argument gets a fight started. | El carbón para brasas, y la leña para el fuego: Y el hombre rencilloso para encender contienda. |
| The words of one who says evil of his neighbour secretly are like sweet food, they go down into the inner parts of the stomach. | Las palabras del chismoso parecen blandas; Mas ellas entran hasta lo secreto del vientre. |
| Smooth lips and an evil heart are like a vessel of earth plated with silver waste. | Como escoria de plata echada sobre el tiesto, Son los labios enardecidos y el corazón malo. |
| With his lips the hater makes things seem what they are not, but deceit is stored up inside him; | Otro parece en los labios al que aborrece; Mas en su interior pone engaño. |
| When he says fair words, have no belief in him; for in his heart are seven evils: | Cuando hablare amigablemente, no le creas; Porque siete abominaciones hay en su corazón. |
| Though his hate is covered with deceit, his sin will be seen openly before the meeting of the people. | Encúbrese el odio con disimulo; Mas su malicia será descubierta en la congregación. |
| He who makes a hole in the earth will himself go falling into it: and on him by whom a stone is rolled the stone will come back again. | El que cavare sima, caerá en ella: Y el que revuelva la piedra, á él volverá. |
| A false tongue has hate for those who have clean hearts, and a smooth mouth is a cause of falling. | La falsa lengua atormenta al que aborrece: Y la boca lisonjera hace resbaladero. |
