| Y PASADAS estas cosas andaba Jesús en Galilea: que no quería andar en Judea, porque los Judíos procuraban matarle. | After this, Jesus went from place to place in Galilee. He did not go about in Judaea, because the Jews were looking for a chance to put him to death. |
| Y estaba cerca la fiesta de los Judíos, la de los tabernáculos. | But the feast of the Jews, the feast of tents, was near. |
| Y dijéronle sus hermanos: Pásate de aquí, y vete á Judea, para que también tus discípulos vean las obras que haces. | So his brothers said to him, Go away from here into Judaea so that your disciples may see the works which you do. |
| Que ninguno que procura ser claro, hace algo en oculto. Si estas cosas haces, manifiéstate al mundo. | Because no man does things secretly if he has a desire that men may have knowledge of him. If you do these things, let yourself be seen by all men. |
| Porque ni aun sus hermanos creían en él. | For even his brothers had no belief in him. |
| Díceles entonces Jesús: Mi tiempo aun no ha venido; mas vuestro tiempo siempre está presto. | Jesus said to them, My time is still to come, but any time is good for you. |
| No puede el mundo aborreceros á vosotros; mas á mí me aborrece, porque yo doy testimonio de él, que sus obras son malas. | It is not possible for you to be hated by the world; but I am hated by it, because I give witness that what it does is evil. |
| Vosotros subid á esta fiesta; yo no subo aún á esta fiesta, porque mi tiempo aun no es cumplido. | Go you up to the feast: I am not going up now to the feast because my time has not fully come. |
| Y habiéndoles dicho esto, quedóse en Galilea. | Having said these things to them, he still kept in Galilee. |
| Mas como sus hermanos hubieron subido, entonces él también subió á la fiesta, no manifiestamente, sino como en secreto. | But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he went up, not publicly, but in secret. |
| Y buscábanle los Judíos en la fiesta, y decían: ¿Dónde está aquél? | At the feast the Jews were looking for him and saying, Where is he? |
| Y había grande murmullo de él entre la gente: porque unos decían: Bueno es; y otros decían: No, antes engaña á las gentes. | And there was much discussion about him among the mass of the people. Some said, He is a good man; but others said, No, he is giving people false ideas. |
| Mas ninguno hablaba abiertamente de él, por miedo de los Judíos. | But no man said anything about him openly for fear of the Jews. |
| Y al medio de la fiesta subió Jesús al templo, y enseñaba. | Now in the middle of the feast Jesus went up to the Temple and was teaching. |
| y maravillábanse los Judíos, diciendo: ¿Cómo sabe éste letras, no habiendo aprendido? | Then the Jews were surprised and said, How has this man got knowledge of books? He has never been to school. |
| Respondióles Jesús, y dijo: Mi doctrina no es mía, sino de aquél que me envió. | Jesus gave them this answer: It is not my teaching, but his who sent me. |
| El que quisiere hacer su voluntad, conocerá de la doctrina si viene de Dios, ó si yo hablo de mí mismo. | If any man is ready to do God's pleasure he will have knowledge of the teaching and of where it comes from--from God or from myself. |
| El que habla de sí mismo, su propia gloria busca; mas el que busca la gloria del que le envió, éste es verdadero, y no hay en él injusticia. | The man whose words come from himself is looking for glory for himself, but he who is looking for the glory of him who sent him--that man is true and there is no evil in him. |
| ¿No os dió Moisés la ley, y ninguno de vosotros hace la ley? ¿Por qué me procuráis matar? | Did not Moses give you the law? Even so, not one of you keeps the law. Why have you a desire to put me to death? |
| Respondió la gente, y dijo: Demonio tienes: ¿quién te procura matar? | The people said in answer, You have an evil spirit: who has any desire to put you to death? |
| Jesús respondió, y díjoles: Una obra hice, y todos os maravilláis. | This was the answer of Jesus: I have done one work and you are all surprised at it. |
| Cierto, Moisés os dió la circuncisión (no porque sea de Moisés, mas de los padres); y en sábado circuncidáis al hombre. | Moses gave you circumcision--not that it comes from Moses, but from the fathers--and even on the Sabbath you give a child circumcision. |
| Si recibe el hombre la circuncisión en sábado, para que la ley de Moisés no sea quebrantada, ¿os enojáis conmigo porque en sábado hice sano todo un hombre? | If a child is given circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? |
| No juzguéis según lo que parece, mas juzgad justo juicio. | Let not your decisions be based on what you see, but on righteousness. |
| Decían entonces unos de los de Jerusalem: ¿No es éste al que buscan para matarlo? | Then some of the people of Jerusalem said, Is not this the man whose death is desired? |
| Y he aquí, habla públicamente, y no le dicen nada; ¿si habrán entendido verdaderamente los príncipes, que éste es el Cristo? | And here he is talking openly and they say nothing to him! Is it possible that the rulers have knowledge that this is truly the Christ? |
| Mas éste, sabemos de dónde es: y cuando viniere el Cristo, nadie sabrá de dónde sea. | However, it is clear to us where this man comes from: but when the Christ comes no one will have knowledge where he comes from. |
| Entonces clamaba Jesús en el templo, enseñando y diciendo: Y á mí me conocéis, y sabéis de dónde soy: y no he venido de mí mismo; mas el que me envió es verdadero, al cual vosotros no conocéis. | Then, when he was teaching in the Temple, Jesus said with a loud voice, You have knowledge of me and you have knowledge of where I come from; and I have not come of myself; but there is One who has sent me; he is true, but you have no knowledge of him. |
| Yo le conozco, porque de él soy, y él me envió. | I have knowledge of him because I came from him and he sent me. |
| Entonces procuraban prenderle; mas ninguno puso en él mano, porque aun no había venido su hora. | Then they had a desire to take him: but no man put hands on him because his hour was still to come. |
| Y muchos del pueblo creyeron en él, y decían: El Cristo, cuando viniere, ¿hará más señales que las que éste hace? | And numbers of the people had belief in him, and they said, When the Christ comes will he do more signs than this man has done? |
| Los Fariseos oyeron á la gente que murmuraba de él estas cosas; y los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los Fariseos enviaron servidores que le prendiesen. | This discussion of the people came to the ears of the Pharisees; and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent servants to take him. |
| Y Jesús dijo: Aun un poco de tiempo estaré con vosotros, é iré al que me envió. | Then Jesus said, I will be with you a little longer and then I go to him who sent me. |
| Me buscaréis, y no me hallaréis; y donde yo estaré, vosotros no podréis venir. | You will be looking for me, and you will not see me: and where I am you may not come. |
| Entonces los Judíos dijeron entre sí: ¿A dónde se ha de ir éste que no le hallemos? ¿Se ha de ir á los esparcidos entre los Griegos, y á enseñar á los Griegos? | So the Jews said among themselves, To what place is he going where we will not see him? will he go to the Jews living among the Greeks and become the teacher of the Greeks? |
| ¿Qué dicho es éste que dijo: Me buscaréis, y no me hallaréis; y donde yo estaré, vosotros no podréis venir? | What is this saying of his, You will be looking for me and will not see me, and where I am you may not come? |
| Mas en el postrer día grande de la fiesta, Jesús se ponía en pie y clamaba, diciendo: Si alguno tiene sed, venga á mí y beba. | On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus got up and said in a loud voice, If any man is in need of drink let him come to me and I will give it to him. |
| El que cree en mí, como dice la Escritura, ríos de agua viva correrán de su vientre. | He who has faith in me, out of his body, as the Writings have said, will come rivers of living water. |
| (Y esto dijo del Espíritu que habían de recibir los que creyesen en él: pues aun no había venido el Espíritu Santo; porque Jesús no estaba aún glorificado.) | This he said of the Spirit which would be given to those who had faith in him: the Spirit had not been given then, because the glory of Jesus was still to come. |
| Entonces algunos de la multitud, oyendo este dicho, decían: Verdaderamente éste es el profeta. | When these words came to their ears, some of the people said, This is certainly the prophet. |
| Otros decían: Este es el Cristo. Algunos empero decían: ¿De Galilea ha de venir el Cristo? | Others said, This is the Christ. But others said, Not so; will the Christ come from Galilee? |
| ¿No dice la Escritura, que de la simiente de David, y de la aldea de Bethlehem, de donde era David, vendrá el Cristo? | Do not the Writings say that the Christ comes of the seed of David and from Beth-lehem, the little town where David was? |
| Así que había disensión entre la gente acerca de él. | So there was a division among the people because of him. |
| Y algunos de ellos querían prenderle; mas ninguno echó sobre él manos. | And some of them had a desire to take him; but no man put hands on him. |
| Y los ministriles vinieron á los principales sacerdotes y á los Fariseos; y ellos les dijeron: ¿Por qué no le trajisteis? | Then the servants went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why have you not got him with you? |
| Los ministriles respondieron: Nunca ha hablado hombre así como este hombre. | The servants made answer, No man ever said things like this man. |
| Entonces los Fariseos les respondieron: ¿Estáis también vosotros engañados? | Then the Pharisees said to them, Have you, like the others, been given false ideas? |
| ¿Ha creído en él alguno de los príncipes, ó de los Fariseos? | Have any of the rulers belief in him, or any one of the Pharisees? |
| Mas estos comunales que no saben la ley, malditos son. | But these people who have no knowledge of the law are cursed. |
| Díceles Nicodemo (el que vino á él de noche, el cual era uno de ellos): | Nicodemus--he who had come to Jesus before, being himself one of them--said to them, |
| ¿Juzga nuestra ley á hombre, si primero no oyere de él, y entendiere lo que ha hecho? | Is a man judged by our law before it has given him a hearing and has knowledge of what he has done? |
| Respondieron y dijéronle: ¿Eres tú también Galileo? Escudriña y ve que de Galilea nunca se levantó profeta. | This was their answer: And do you come from Galilee? Make search and you will see that no prophet comes out of Galilee. |
| Y fuése cada uno á su casa. | [And every man went to his house; |
