| Y VENIDA la mañana, entraron en consejo todos los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los ancianos del pueblo, contra Jesús, para entregarle á muerte. | Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death. |
| Y le llevaron atado, y le entregaron á Poncio Pilato presidente. | And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler. |
| Entonces Judas, el que le había entregado, viendo que era condenado, volvió arrepentido las treinta piezas de plata á los príncipes de los sacerdotes y á los ancianos, | Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority, |
| Diciendo: Yo he pecado entregando la sangre inocente. Mas ellos dijeron: ¿Qué se nos da á nosotros? Viéras lo tú. | Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business. |
| Y arrojando las piezas de plata en el templo, partióse; y fué, y se ahorcó. | And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging. |
| Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes, tomando las piezas de plata, dijeron: No es lícito echarlas en el tesoro de los dones, porque es precio de sangre. | And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood. |
| Mas habido consejo, compraron con ellas el campo del alfarero, por sepultura para los extranjeros. | And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries. |
| Por lo cual fué llamado aquel campo, Campo de sangre, hasta el día de hoy. | For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day. |
| Entonces se cumplió lo que fué dicho por el profeta Jeremías, que dijo: Y tomaron las treinta piezas de plata, precio del apreciado, que fué apreciado por los hijos de Israel; | Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel; |
| Y las dieron para el campo del alfarero, como me ordenó el Señor. | And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord. |
| Y Jesús estuvo delante del presidente; y el presidente le preguntó, diciendo: ¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos? Y Jesús le dijo: Tú lo dices. | And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so. |
| Y siendo acusado por los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y por los ancianos, nada respondió. | But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer. |
| Pilato entonces le dice: ¿No oyes cuántas cosas testifican contra tí? | Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you? |
| Y no le respondió ni una palabra; de tal manera que el presidente se maravillaba mucho, | And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised. |
| Y en el día de la fiesta acostumbraba el presidente soltar al pueblo un preso, cual quisiesen. | Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection. |
| Y tenían entonces un preso famoso que se llamaba Barrabás. | And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas. |
| Y juntos ellos, les dijo Pilato; ¿Cuál queréis que os suelte? ¿á Barrabás ó á Jesús que se dice el Cristo? | So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ? |
| Porque sabía que por envidia le habían entregado. | For he saw that for envy they had given him up. |
| Y estando él sentado en el tribunal, su mujer envió á él, diciendo: No tengas que ver con aquel justo; porque hoy he padecido muchas cosas en sueños por causa de él. | And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him. |
| Mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos, persuadieron al pueblo que pidiese á Barrabás, y á Jesús matase. | Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death. |
| Y respondiendo el presidente les dijo: ¿Cuál de los dos queréis que os suelte? Y ellos dijeron: á Barrabás. | But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas. |
| Pilato les dijo: ¿Qué pues haré de Jesús que se dice el Cristo? Dícenle todos: Sea crucificado. | Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross. |
| Y el presidente les dijo: Pues ¿qué mal ha hecho? Mas ellos gritaban más, diciendo: Sea crucificado. | And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him! |
| Y viendo Pilato que nada adelantaba, antes se hacía más alboroto, tomando agua se lavó las manos delante del pueblo, diciendo: Inocente soy yo de la sangre de este justo veréis lo vosotros. | So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible. |
| Y respondiendo todo el pueblo, dijo: Su sangre sea sobre nosotros, y sobre nuestros hijos. | And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children. |
| Entonces les soltó á Barrabás: y habiendo azotado á Jesús, le entregó para ser crucificado. | Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross. |
| Entonces los soldados del presidente llevaron á Jesús al pretorio, y juntaron á él toda la cuadrilla; | Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together. |
| Y desnudándole, le echaron encima un manto de grana; | And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe. |
| Y pusieron sobre su cabeza una corona tejida de espinas, y una caña en su mano derecha; é hincando la rodilla delante de él, le burlaban, diciendo: ¡Salve, Rey de los Judíos! | And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews. |
| Y escupiendo en él, tomaron la caña, y le herían en la cabeza. | And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod. |
| Y después que le hubieron escarnecido, le desnudaron el manto, y le vistieron de sus vestidos, y le llevaron para crucificarle. | And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross. |
| Y saliendo, hallaron á un Cireneo, que se llamaba Simón: á éste cargaron para que llevase su cruz. | And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross. |
| Y como llegaron al lugar que se llamaba Gólgotha, que es dicho, El lugar de la calavera, | And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head, |
| Le dieron á beber vinagre mezclado con hiel: y gustando, no quiso beber lo | They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more. |
| Y después que le hubieron crucificado, repartieron sus vestidos, echando suertes: para que se cumpliese lo que fué dicho por el profeta: Se repartieron mis vestidos, y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes. | And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance. |
| Y sentados le guardaban allí. | And they were seated there watching him. |
| Y pusieron sobre su cabeza su causa escrita: ESTE ES JESUS EL REY DE LOS JUDIOS. | And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
| Entonces crucificaron con él dos ladrones, uno á la derecha, y otro á la izquierda. | Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left. |
| Y los que pasaban, le decían injurias, meneando sus cabezas, | And those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying, |
| Y diciendo: Tú, el que derribas el templo, y en tres días lo reedificas, sálvate á ti mismo: si eres Hijo de Dios, desciende de la cruz. | You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. |
| De esta manera también los príncipes de los sacerdotes, escarneciendo con los escribas y los Fariseos y los ancianos, decían: | In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said, |
| á otros salvó, á sí mismo no puede salvar: si es el Rey de Israel, descienda ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él. | A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him. |
| Confió en Dios: líbrele ahora si le quiere: porque ha dicho: Soy Hijo de Dios. | He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God. |
| Lo mismo también le zaherían los ladrones que estaban crucificados con él. | And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him. |
| Y desde la hora de sexta fueron tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora de nona. | Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour. |
| Y cerca de la hora de nona, Jesús exclamó con grande voz, diciendo: Eli, Eli, ¿lama sabachtani? Esto es: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado? | And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me? |
| Y algunos de los que estaban allí, oyéndolo, decían: A Elías llama éste. | And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah. |
| Y luego, corriendo uno de ellos, tomó una esponja, y la hinchió de vinagre, y poniéndola en una caña, dábale de beber. | And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink. |
| Y los otros decían: Deja, veamos si viene Elías á librarle. | And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help. |
| Mas Jesús, habiendo otra vez exclamado con grande voz, dió el espíritu. | And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit. |
| Y he aquí, el velo del templo se rompió en dos, de alto á bajo: y la tierra tembló, y las piedras se hendieron; | And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken; |
| Y abriéronse los sepulcros, y muchos cuerpos de santos que habían dormido, se levantaron; | And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life; |
| Y salidos de los sepulcros, después de su resurrección, vinieron á la santa ciudad, y aparecieron á muchos. | And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people. |
| Y el centurión, y los que estaban con él guardando á Jesús, visto el terremoto, y las cosas que habían sido hechas, temieron en gran manera, diciendo: Verdaderamente Hijo de Dios era éste. | Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God. |
| Y estaban allí muchas mujeres mirando de lejos, las cuales habían seguido de Galilea á Jesús, sirviéndole: | And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs. |
| Entre las cuales estaban María Magdalena, y María la madre de Jacobo y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo. | Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. |
| Y como fué la tarde del día, vino un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, el cual también había sido discípulo de Jesús. | And in the evening, there came a man of wealth from Arimathaea, Joseph by name, who was a disciple of Jesus: |
| Este llegó á Pilato, y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús: entonces Pilato mandó que se le diese el cuerpo. | This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him. |
| Y tomando José el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia, | And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen, |
| Y lo puso en su sepulcro nuevo, que había labrado en la peña: y revuelta una grande piedra á la puerta del sepulcro, se fué. | And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away. |
| Y estaban allí María Magdalena, y la otra María, sentadas delante del sepulcro. | And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead. |
| Y el siguiente día, que es después de la preparación, se juntaron los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los Fariseos á Pilato, | Now on the day after the getting ready of the Passover, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate, |
| Diciendo: Señor, nos acordamos que aquel engañador dijo, viviendo aún: Después de tres días resucitaré. | Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead. |
| Manda, pues, que se asegure el sepulcro hasta el día tercero; porque no vengan sus discípulos de noche, y le hurten, y digan al pueblo: Resucitó de los muertos. Y será el postrer error peor que el primero. | Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first. |
| Y Pilato les dijo: Tenéis una guardia: id, aseguradlo como sabéis. | Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able. |
| Y yendo ellos, aseguraron el sepulcro, sellando la piedra, con la guardia. | So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them. |
