Proverbs 20

EL vino es escarnecedor, la cerveza alborotadora; Y cualquiera que por ello errare, no será sabio. | Wine makes men foolish, and strong drink makes men come to blows; and whoever comes into error through these is not wise. |
Como bramido de cachorro de león es el terror del rey: El que lo hace enfurecerse, peca contra su alma. | The wrath of a king is like the loud cry of a lion: he who makes him angry does wrong against himself. |
Honra es del hombre dejarse de contienda: Mas todo insensato se envolverá en ella. | It is an honour for a man to keep from fighting, but the foolish are ever at war. |
El perezoso no ara á causa del invierno; Pedirá pues en la siega, y no hallará. | The hater of work will not do his ploughing because of the winter; so at the time of grain-cutting he will be requesting food and will get nothing. |
Como aguas profundas es el consejo en el corazón del hombre: Mas el hombre entendido lo alcanzará. | The purpose in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of good sense will get it out. |
Muchos hombres publican cada uno su liberalidad: Mas hombre de verdad, ¿quién lo hallará? | Most men make no secret of their kind acts: but where is a man of good faith to be seen? |
El justo que camina en su integridad, Bienaventurados serán sus hijos después de él. | An upright man goes on in his righteousness: happy are his children after him! |
El rey que se sienta en el trono de juicio, Con su mirar disipa todo mal. | A king on the seat of judging puts to flight all evil with his eyes. |
¿Quién podrá decir: Yo he limpiado mi corazón, Limpio estoy de mi pecado? | Who is able to say, I have made my heart clean, I am free from my sin? |
Doble pesa y doble medida, Abominación son á Jehová ambas cosas. | Unequal weights and unequal measures, they are all disgusting to the Lord. |
Aun el muchacho es conocido por sus hechos, Si su obra fuere limpia y recta. | Even a child may be judged by his doings, if his work is free from sin and if it is right. |
El oído que oye, y el ojo que ve, Ambas cosas ha igualmente hecho Jehová. | The hearing ear and the seeing eye are equally the Lord's work. |
No ames el sueño, porque no te empobrezcas; Abre tus ojos, y te hartarás de pan. | Do not be a lover of sleep, or you will become poor: keep your eyes open, and you will have bread enough. |
El que compra dice: Malo es, malo es: Mas en apartándose, se alaba. | A poor thing, a poor thing, says he who is giving money for goods: but when he has gone on his way, then he makes clear his pride in what he has got. |
Hay oro y multitud de piedras preciosas: Mas los labios sabios son vaso precioso. | There is gold and a store of corals: but the lips of knowledge are a jewel of great price. |
Quítale su ropa al que salió por fiador del extraño; Y tómale prenda al que fía la extraña. | Take a man's clothing if he makes himself responsible for a strange man, and get an undertaking from him who gives his word for strange men. |
Sabroso es al hombre el pan de mentira; Mas después su boca será llena de cascajo. | Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but after, his mouth will be full of sand. |
Los pensamientos con el consejo se ordenan: Y con industria se hace la guerra. | Every purpose is put into effect by wise help: and by wise guiding make war. |
El que descubre el secreto, en chismes anda: No te entrometas, pues, con el que lisonjea con sus labios. | He who goes about talking of the business of others gives away secrets: so have nothing to do with him whose lips are open wide. |
El que maldice á su padre ó á su madre, Su lámpara será apagada en oscuridad tenebrosa. | If anyone puts a curse on his father or his mother, his light will be put out in the blackest night. |
La herencia adquirida de priesa al principio, Aun su postrimería no será bendita. | A heritage may be got quickly at first, but the end of it will not be a blessing. |
No digas, yo me vengaré; Espera á Jehová, y él te salvará. | Do not say, I will give punishment for evil: go on waiting for the Lord, and he will be your saviour. |
Abominación son á Jehová las pesas dobles; Y el peso falso no es bueno. | Unequal weights are disgusting to the Lord, and false scales are not good. |
De Jehová son los pasos del hombre: ¿Cómo pues entenderá el hombre su camino? | A man's steps are of the Lord; how then may a man have knowledge of his way? |
Lazo es al hombre el devorar lo santo, Y andar pesquisando después de los votos. | It is a danger to a man to say without thought, It is holy, and, after taking his oaths, to be questioning if it is necessary to keep them. |
El rey sabio esparce los impíos. Y sobre ellos hace tornar la rueda. | A wise king puts evil-doers to flight, and makes their evil-doing come back on them. |
Candela de Jehová es el alma del hombre, Que escudriña lo secreto del vientre. | The Lord keeps watch over the spirit of man, searching all the deepest parts of the body. |
Misericordia y verdad guardan al rey; Y con clemencia sustenta su trono. | Mercy and good faith keep the king safe, and the seat of his power is based on upright acts. |
La gloria de los jóvenes es su fortaleza, Y la hermosura de los viejos la vejez. | The glory of young men is their strength, and the honour of old men is their grey hairs. |
Las señales de las heridas son medicina para lo malo: Y las llagas llegan á lo más secreto del vientre. | By the wounds of the rod evil is taken away, and blows make clean the deepest parts of the body. |
