| Ainsi m`a parlé l`Éternel: Va, achète-toi une ceinture de lin, et mets-la sur tes reins; mais ne la trempe pas dans l`eau. | This is what the Lord said to me: Go and get yourself a linen band and put it round you and do not put it in water. |
| J`achetai la ceinture, selon la parole de l`Éternel, et je la mis sur mes reins. | So, as the Lord said, I got a band for a price and put it round my body. |
| La parole de l`Éternel me fut adressée une seconde fois, en ces mots: | And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, |
| Prends la ceinture que tu as achetée, et qui est sur tes reins; lève-toi, va vers l`Euphrate, et là, cache-la dans la fente d`un rocher. | Take the band which you got for a price, which is round your body, and go to Parah and put it in a secret place there in a hole of the rock. |
| J`allai, et je la cachai près de l`Euphrate, comme l`Éternel me l`avait ordonné. | So I went and put it in a secret place by Parah, as the Lord had said to me. |
| Plusieurs jours après, l`Éternel me dit: Lève-toi, va vers l`Euphrate, et là, prends la ceinture que je t`avais ordonné d`y cacher. | Then after a long time, the Lord said to me, Up! go to Parah and get the band which I gave you orders to put there. |
| J`allai vers l`Euphrate, je fouillai, et je pris la ceinture dans le lieu où je l`avais cachée; mais voici, la ceinture était gâtée, elle n`était plus bonne à rien. | So I went to Parah and, uncovering the hole, took the band from the place where I had put it away: and the band was damaged and of no use for anything. |
| La parole de l`Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots: | Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, |
| Ainsi parle l`Éternel: C`est ainsi que je détruirai l`orgueil de Juda Et l`orgueil immense de Jérusalem. | The Lord has said, In this way I will do damage to the pride of Judah and to the great pride of Jerusalem. |
| Ce méchant peuple, qui refuse d`écouter mes paroles, Qui suit les penchants de son coeur, Et qui va après d`autres dieux, Pour les servir et se prosterner devant eux, Qu`il devienne comme cette ceinture, Qui n`est plus bonne à rien! | These evil people who say they will not give ear to my words, who go on in the pride of their hearts and have become servants and worshippers of other gods, will become like this band which is of no use for anything. |
| Car comme on attache la ceinture aux reins d`un homme, Ainsi je m`étais attaché toute la maison d`Israël Et toute la maison de Juda, dit l`Éternel, Afin qu`elles fussent mon peuple, Mon nom, ma louange, et ma gloire. Mais ils ne m`ont point écouté. | For as a band goes tightly round a man's body, so I made all the people of Israel and all the people of Judah tightly united to me; so that they might be a people for me and a name and a praise and a glory: but they would not give ear. |
| Tu leur diras cette parole: Ainsi parle l`Éternel, le Dieu d`Israël: Tous les vases seront remplis de vin. Et ils te diront: Ne savons-nous pas Que tous les vases seront remplis de vin? | So you are to say this word to them: This is the word of the Lord, the God of Israel: Every skin bottle will be full of wine; and they will say to you, Is it not quite clear to us that every skin bottle will be full of wine? |
| Alors dis-leur: Ainsi parle l`Éternel: Voici, je remplirai tous les habitants de ce pays, Les rois qui sont assis sur le trône de David, Les sacrificateurs, les prophètes, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem, Je les remplirai d`ivresse. | Then you are to say to them, The Lord has said, I will make all the people of this land, even the kings seated on David's seat, and the priests and the prophets and all the people of Jerusalem, overcome with strong drink. |
| Je les briserai les uns contre les autres, Les pères et les fils ensemble, dit l`Éternel; Je n`épargnerai pas, je n`aurai point de pitié, point de miséricorde, Rien ne m`empêchera de les détruire. | I will have them smashed against one another, fathers and sons together, says the Lord: I will have no pity or mercy, I will have no feeling for them to keep me from giving them to destruction. |
| Écoutez et prêtez l`oreille! Ne soyez point orgueilleux! Car l`Éternel parle. | Give ear and let your ears be open; be not lifted up: for these are the words of the Lord. |
| Rendez gloire à l`Éternel, votre Dieu, Avant qu`il fasse venir les ténèbres, Avant que vos pieds heurtent contre les montagnes de la nuit; Vous attendrez la lumière, Et il la changera en ombre de la mort, Il la réduira en obscurité profonde. | Give glory to the Lord your God, before he makes it dark, and before your feet are slipping on the dark mountains, and, while you are looking for a light, he makes it into deep dark, into black night. |
| Si vous n`écoutez pas, Je pleurerai en secret, à cause de votre orgueil; Mes yeux fondront en larmes, Parce que le troupeau de l`Éternel sera emmené captif. | But if you do not give ear to it, my soul will be weeping in secret for your pride; my eye will be weeping bitterly, streaming with water, because the Lord's flock has been taken away as prisoners. |
| Dis au roi et à la reine: Asseyez-vous à terre! Car il est tombé de vos têtes, Le diadème qui vous servait d`ornement. | Say to the king and to the queen-mother, Make yourselves low, be seated on the earth: for the crown of your glory has come down from your heads. |
| Les villes du midi sont fermées, Il n`y a personne pour ouvrir; Tout Juda est emmené captif, Il est emmené tout entier captif. | The towns of the south are shut up, and there is no one to make them open: Judah is taken away as prisoners; all Judah is taken away as prisoners. |
| Lève tes yeux et regarde Ceux qui viennent du septentrion. Où est le troupeau qui t`avait été donné, Le troupeau qui faisait ta gloire? | Let your eyes be lifted up (O Jerusalem), and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock which was given to you, your beautiful flock? |
| Que diras-tu de ce qu`il te châtie? C`est toi-même qui leur as appris à te traiter en maîtres. Les douleurs ne te saisiront-elles pas, Comme elles saisissent une femme en travail? | What will you say when he puts over you those whom you yourself have made your friends? will not pains take you like a woman in childbirth? |
| Si tu dis en ton coeur: Pourquoi cela m`arrive-t-il? C`est à cause de la multitude de tes iniquités Que les pans de tes habits sont relevés, Et que tes talons sont violemment mis à nu. | And if you say in your heart, Why have these things come on me? because of the number of your sins, your skirts have been uncovered and violent punishment overtakes you. |
| Un Éthiopien peut-il changer sa peau, Et un léopard ses taches? De même, pourriez-vous faire le bien, Vous qui êtes accoutumés à faire le mal? | Is it possible for the skin of the Ethiopian to be changed, or the markings on the leopard? Then it might be possible for you to do good, who have been trained to do evil. |
| Je les disperserai, comme la paille emportée Par le vent du désert. | So I will send them in all directions, as dry grass is taken away by the wind of the waste land. |
| Voilà ton sort, la part que je te mesure, Dit l`Éternel, Parce que tu m`as oublié, Et que tu as mis ta confiance dans le mensonge. | This is your fate, the part measured out to you by me, says the Lord, because you have put me out of your memory and put your faith in what is false. |
| Je relèverai tes pans jusque sur ton visage, Afin qu`on voie ta honte. | So I will have your skirts uncovered before your face, in order that your shame may be seen. |
| J`ai vu tes adultères et tes hennissements, Tes criminelles prostitutions sur les collines et dans les champs, J`ai vu tes abominations. Malheur à toi, Jérusalem! Jusques à quand tarderas-tu à te purifier? | I have seen your disgusting acts, even your false behaviour and your cries of desire and your loose ways on the hills in the field. Unhappy are you, O Jerusalem, you have no desire to be made clean; how long will you be in turning back to me? |
