| L`Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit: | And the Lord made answer to Job out of the storm-wind, and said, |
| Qui est celui qui obscurcit mes desseins Par des discours sans intelligence? | Who is this who makes the purpose of God dark by words without knowledge? |
| Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme; Je t`interrogerai, et tu m`instruiras. | Get your strength together like a man of war; I will put questions to you, and you will give me the answers. |
| Où étais-tu quand je fondais la terre? Dis-le, si tu as de l`intelligence. | Where were you when I put the earth on its base? Say, if you have knowledge. |
| Qui en a fixé les dimensions, le sais-tu? Ou qui a étendu sur elle le cordeau? | By whom were its measures fixed? Say, if you have wisdom; or by whom was the line stretched out over it? |
| Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles appuyées? Ou qui en a posé la pierre angulaire, | On what were its pillars based, or who put down its angle-stone, |
| Alors que les étoiles du matin éclataient en chants d`allégresse, Et que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie? | When the morning stars made songs together, and all the sons of the gods gave cries of joy? |
| Qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, Quand elle s`élança du sein maternel; | Or where were you when the sea came to birth, pushing out from its secret place; |
| Quand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, Et de l`obscurité ses langes; | When I made the cloud its robe, and put thick clouds as bands round it, |
| Quand je lui imposai ma loi, Et que je lui mis des barrières et des portes; | Ordering a fixed limit for it, with locks and doors; |
| Quand je dis: Tu viendras jusqu`ici, tu n`iras pas au delà; Ici s`arrêtera l`orgueil de tes flots? | And said, So far you may come, and no farther; and here the pride of your waves will be stopped? |
| Depuis que tu existes, as-tu commandé au matin? As-tu montré sa place à l`aurore, | Have you, from your earliest days, given orders to the morning, or made the dawn conscious of its place; |
| Pour qu`elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre, Et que les méchants en soient secoués; | So that it might take a grip of the skirts of the earth, shaking all the evil-doers out of it? |
| Pour que la terre se transforme comme l`argile qui reçoit une empreinte, Et qu`elle soit parée comme d`un vêtement; | It is changed like wet earth under a stamp, and is coloured like a robe; |
| Pour que les méchants soient privés de leur lumière, Et que le bras qui se lève soit brisé? | And from the evil-doers their light is kept back, and the arm of pride is broken. |
| As-tu pénétré jusqu`aux sources de la mer? T`es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l`abîme? | Have you come into the springs of the sea, walking in the secret places of the deep? |
| Les portes de la mort t`ont-elles été ouvertes? As-tu vu les portes de l`ombre de la mort? | Have the doors of death been open to you, or have the door-keepers of the dark ever seen you? |
| As-tu embrassé du regard l`étendue de la terre? Parle, si tu sais toutes ces choses. | Have you taken note of the wide limits of the earth? Say, if you have knowledge of it all. |
| Où est le chemin qui conduit au séjour de la lumière? Et les ténèbres, où ont-elles leur demeure? | Which is the way to the resting-place of the light, and where is the store-house of the dark; |
| Peux-tu les saisir à leur limite, Et connaître les sentiers de leur habitation? | So that you might take it to its limit, guiding it to its house? |
| Tu le sais, car alors tu étais né, Et le nombre de tes jours est grand! | No doubt you have knowledge of it, for then you had come to birth, and the number of your days is great. |
| Es-tu parvenu jusqu`aux amas de neige? As-tu vu les dépôts de grêle, | Have you come into the secret place of snow, or have you seen the store-houses of the ice-drops, |
| Que je tiens en réserve pour les temps de détresse, Pour les jours de guerre et de bataille? | Which I have kept for the time of trouble, for the day of war and fighting? |
| Par quel chemin la lumière se divise-t-elle, Et le vent d`orient se répand-il sur la terre? | Which is the way to the place where the wind is measured out, and the east wind sent out over the earth? |
| Qui a ouvert un passage à la pluie, Et tracé la route de l`éclair et du tonnerre, | By whom has the way been cut for the flowing of the rain, and the flaming of the thunder; |
| Pour que la pluie tombe sur une terre sans habitants, Sur un désert où il n`y a point d`hommes; | Causing rain to come on a land where no man is living, on the waste land which has no people; |
| Pour qu`elle abreuve les lieux solitaires et arides, Et qu`elle fasse germer et sortir l`herbe? | To give water to the land where there is waste and destruction, and to make the dry land green with young grass? |
| La pluie a-t-elle un père? Qui fait naître les gouttes de la rosée? | Has the rain a father? or who gave birth to the drops of night mist? |
| Du sein de qui sort la glace, Et qui enfante le frimas du ciel, | Out of whose body came the ice? and who gave birth to the cold mist of heaven? |
| Pour que les eaux se cachent comme une pierre, Et que la surface de l`abîme soit enchaînée? | The waters are joined together, hard as a stone, and the face of the deep is covered. |
| Noues-tu les liens des Pléiades, Ou détaches-tu les cordages de l`Orion? | Are the bands of the Pleiades fixed by you, or are the cords of Orion made loose? |
| Fais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du zodiaque, Et conduis-tu la Grande Ourse avec ses petits? | Do you make Mazzaroth come out in its right time, or are the Bear and its children guided by you? |
| Connais-tu les lois du ciel? Règles-tu son pouvoir sur la terre? | Have you knowledge of the laws of the heavens? did you give them rule over the earth? |
| Élèves-tu la voix jusqu`aux nuées, Pour appeler à toi des torrents d`eaux? | Is your voice sent up to the cloud, so that you may be covered by the weight of waters? |
| Lances-tu les éclairs? Partent-ils? Te disent-ils: Nous voici? | Do you send out the thunder-flames, so that they may go, and say to you, Here we are? |
| Qui a mis la sagesse dans le coeur, Ou qui a donné l`intelligence à l`esprit? | Who has put wisdom in the high clouds, or given knowledge to the lights of the north? |
| Qui peut avec sagesse compter les nuages, Et verser les outres des cieux, | By whose wisdom are the clouds numbered, or the water-skins of the heavens turned to the earth, |
| Pour que la poussière se mette à ruisseler, Et que les mottes de terre se collent ensemble? | When the earth becomes hard as metal, and is joined together in masses? |
| Chasses-tu la proie pour la lionne, Et apaises-tu la faim des lionceaux, | Do you go after food for the she-lion, or get meat so that the young lions may have enough, |
| Quand ils sont couchés dans leur tanière, Quand ils sont en embuscade dans leur repaire? | When they are stretched out in their holes, and are waiting in the brushwood? |
| Qui prépare au corbeau sa pâture, Quand ses petits crient vers Dieu, Quand ils sont errants et affamés? | Who gives in the evening the meat he is searching for, when his young ones are crying to God; when the young lions with loud noise go wandering after their food? |
