Un fils sage écoute l`instruction de son père, Mais le moqueur n`écoute pas la réprimande. | A wise son is a lover of teaching, but the ears of the haters of authority are shut to sharp words. |
Par le fruit de la bouche on jouit du bien; Mais ce que désirent les perfides, c`est la violence. | A man will get good from the fruit of his lips, but the desire of the false is for violent acts. |
Celui qui veille sur sa bouche garde son âme; Celui qui ouvre de grandes lèvres court à sa perte. | He who keeps a watch on his mouth keeps his life; but he whose lips are open wide will have destruction. |
L`âme du paresseux a des désirs qu`il ne peut satisfaire; Mais l`âme des hommes diligents sera rassasiée. | The hater of work does not get his desires, but the soul of the hard workers will be made fat. |
Le juste hait les paroles mensongères; Le méchant se rend odieux et se couvre de honte. | The upright man is a hater of false words: the evil-doer gets a bad name and is put to shame. |
La justice garde celui dont la voie est intègre, Mais la méchanceté cause la ruine du pécheur. | Righteousness keeps safe him whose way is without error, but evil-doers are overturned by sin. |
Tel fait le riche et n`a rien du tout, Tel fait le pauvre et a de grands biens. | A man may be acting as if he had wealth, but have nothing; another may seem poor, but have great wealth. |
La richesse d`un homme sert de rançon pour sa vie, Mais le pauvre n`écoute pas la réprimande. | A man will give his wealth in exchange for his life; but the poor will not give ear to sharp words. |
La lumière des justes est joyeuse, Mais la lampe des méchants s`éteint. | There is a glad dawn for the upright man, but the light of the sinner will be put out. |
C`est seulement par orgueil qu`on excite des querelles, Mais la sagesse est avec ceux qui écoutent les conseils. | The only effect of pride is fighting; but wisdom is with the quiet in spirit. |
La richesse mal acquise diminue, Mais celui qui amasse peu à peu l`augmente. | Wealth quickly got will become less; but he who gets a store by the work of his hands will have it increased. |
Un espoir différé rend le coeur malade, Mais un désir accompli est un arbre de vie. | Hope put off is a weariness to the heart; but when what is desired comes, it is a tree of life. |
Celui qui méprise la parole se perd, Mais celui qui craint le précepte est récompensé. | He who makes sport of the word will come to destruction, but the respecter of the law will be rewarded. |
L`enseignement du sage est une source de vie, Pour détourner des pièges de la mort. | The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning men away from the nets of death. |
Une raison saine a pour fruit la grâce, Mais la voie des perfides est rude. | Wise behaviour gets approval, but the way of the false is their destruction. |
Tout homme prudent agit avec connaissance, Mais l`insensé fait étalage de folie. | A sharp man does everything with knowledge, but a foolish man makes clear his foolish thoughts. |
Un envoyé méchant tombe dans le malheur, Mais un messager fidèle apporte la guérison. | A man taking false news is a cause of trouble, but he who gives news rightly makes things well. |
La pauvreté et la honte sont le partage de celui qui rejette la correction, Mais celui qui a égard à la réprimande est honoré. | Need and shame will be the fate of him who is uncontrolled by training; but he who takes note of teaching will be honoured. |
Un désir accompli est doux à l`âme, Mais s`éloigner du mal fait horreur aux insensés. | To get one's desire is sweet to the soul, but to give up evil is disgusting to the foolish. |
Celui qui fréquente les sages devient sage, Mais celui qui se plaît avec les insensés s`en trouve mal. | Go with wise men and be wise: but he who keeps company with the foolish will be broken. |
Le malheur poursuit ceux qui pèchent, Mais le bonheur récompense les justes. | Evil will overtake sinners, but the upright will be rewarded with good. |
L`homme de bien a pour héritiers les enfants de ses enfants, Mais les richesses du pécheur sont réservées pour le juste. | The heritage of the good man is handed down to his children's children; and the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the upright man. |
Le champ que défriche le pauvre donne une nourriture abondante, Mais tel périt par défaut de justice. | There is much food in the ploughed land of the poor; but it is taken away by wrongdoing. |
Celui qui ménage sa verge hait son fils, Mais celui qui l`aime cherche à le corriger. | He who keeps back his rod is unkind to his son: the loving father gives punishment with care. |
Le juste mange et satisfait son appétit, Mais le ventre des méchants éprouve la disette. | The upright man has food to the full measure of his desire, but there will be no food for the stomach of evil-doers. |
