Proverbs 18

Celui qui se tient à l`écart cherche ce qui lui plaît, Il s`irrite contre tout ce qui est sage. | He who keeps himself separate for his private purpose goes against all good sense. |
Ce n`est pas à l`intelligence que l`insensé prend plaisir, C`est à la manifestation de ses pensées. | A foolish man has no pleasure in good sense, but only to let what is in his heart come to light. |
Quand vient le méchant, vient aussi le mépris; Et avec la honte, vient l`opprobre. | When the evil-doer comes, a low opinion comes with him, and with the loss of honour comes shame. |
Les paroles de la bouche d`un homme sont des eaux profondes; La source de la sagesse est un torrent qui jaillit. | The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters: the fountain of wisdom is like a flowing stream. |
Il n`est pas bon d`avoir égard à la personne du méchant, Pour faire tort au juste dans le jugement. | To have respect for the person of the evil-doer is not good, or to give a wrong decision against the upright. |
Les lèvres de l`insensé se mêlent aux querelles, Et sa bouche provoque les coups. | A foolish man's lips are a cause of fighting, and his mouth makes him open to blows. |
La bouche de l`insensé cause sa ruine, Et ses lèvres sont un piège pour son âme. | The mouth of a foolish man is his destruction, and his lips are a net for his soul. |
Les paroles du rapporteur sont comme des friandises, Elles descendent jusqu`au fond des entrailles. | The words of one who says evil of his neighbour secretly are like sweet food, and go down into the inner parts of the stomach. |
Celui qui se relâche dans son travail Est frère de celui qui détruit. | He who does not give his mind to his work is brother to him who makes destruction. |
Le nom de l`Éternel est une tour forte; Le juste s`y réfugie, et se trouve en sûreté. | The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the upright man running into it is safe. |
La fortune est pour le riche une ville forte; Dans son imagination, c`est une haute muraille. | The property of a man of wealth is his strong town, and it is as a high wall in the thoughts of his heart. |
Avant la ruine, le coeur de l`homme s`élève; Mais l`humilité précède la gloire. | Before destruction the heart of man is full of pride, and before honour goes a gentle spirit. |
Celui qui répond avant d`avoir écouté Fait un acte de folie et s`attire la confusion. | To give an answer before hearing is a foolish thing and a cause of shame. |
L`esprit de l`homme le soutient dans la maladie; Mais l`esprit abattu, qui le relèvera? | The spirit of a man will be his support when he is ill; but how may a broken spirit be lifted up? |
Un coeur intelligent acquiert la science, Et l`oreille des sages cherche la science. | The heart of the man of good sense gets knowledge; the ear of the wise is searching for knowledge. |
Les présents d`un homme lui élargissent la voie, Et lui donnent accès auprès des grands. | A man's offering makes room for him, letting him come before great men. |
Le premier qui parle dans sa cause paraît juste; Vient sa partie adverse, et on l`examine. | The man who first puts his cause before the judge seems to be in the right; but then his neighbour comes and puts his cause in its true light. |
Le sort fait cesser les contestations, Et décide entre les puissants. | The decision of chance puts an end to argument, parting the strong. |
Des frères sont plus intraitables qu`une ville forte, Et leurs querelles sont comme les verrous d`un palais. | A brother wounded is like a strong town, and violent acts are like a locked tower. |
C`est du fruit de sa bouche que l`homme rassasie son corps, C`est du produit de ses lèvres qu`il se rassasie. | With the fruit of a man's mouth his stomach will be full; the produce of his lips will be his in full measure. |
La mort et la vie sont au pouvoir de la langue; Quiconque l`aime en mangera les fruits. | Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and those to whom it is dear will have its fruit for their food. |
Celui qui trouve une femme trouve le bonheur; C`est une grâce qu`il obtient de l`Éternel. | Whoever gets a wife gets a good thing, and has the approval of the Lord. |
Le pauvre parle en suppliant, Et le riche répond avec dureté. | The poor man makes requests for grace, but the man of wealth gives a rough answer. |
Celui qui a beaucoup d`amis les a pour son malheur, Mais il est tel ami plus attaché qu`un frère. | There are friends who may be a man's destruction, but there is a lover who keeps nearer than a brother. |
