Proverbs 20

| Le vin est moqueur, les boissons fortes sont tumultueuses; Quiconque en fait excès n`est pas sage. | Wine makes men foolish, and strong drink makes men come to blows; and whoever comes into error through these is not wise. |
| La terreur qu`inspire le roi est comme le rugissement d`un lion; Celui qui l`irrite pèche contre lui-même. | The wrath of a king is like the loud cry of a lion: he who makes him angry does wrong against himself. |
| C`est une gloire pour l`homme de s`abstenir des querelles, Mais tout insensé se livre à l`emportement. | It is an honour for a man to keep from fighting, but the foolish are ever at war. |
| A cause du froid, le paresseux ne laboure pas; A la moisson, il voudrait récolter, mais il n`y a rien. | The hater of work will not do his ploughing because of the winter; so at the time of grain-cutting he will be requesting food and will get nothing. |
| Les desseins dans le coeur de l`homme sont des eaux profondes, Mais l`homme intelligent sait y puiser. | The purpose in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of good sense will get it out. |
| Beaucoup de gens proclament leur bonté; Mais un homme fidèle, qui le trouvera? | Most men make no secret of their kind acts: but where is a man of good faith to be seen? |
| Le juste marche dans son intégrité; Heureux ses enfants après lui! | An upright man goes on in his righteousness: happy are his children after him! |
| Le roi assis sur le trône de la justice Dissipe tout mal par son regard. | A king on the seat of judging puts to flight all evil with his eyes. |
| Qui dira: J`ai purifié mon coeur, Je suis net de mon péché? | Who is able to say, I have made my heart clean, I am free from my sin? |
| Deux sortes de poids, deux sortes d`épha, Sont l`un et l`autre en abomination à l`Éternel. | Unequal weights and unequal measures, they are all disgusting to the Lord. |
| L`enfant laisse déjà voir par ses actions Si sa conduite sera pure et droite. | Even a child may be judged by his doings, if his work is free from sin and if it is right. |
| L`oreille qui entend, et l`oeil qui voit, C`est l`Éternel qui les a faits l`un et l`autre. | The hearing ear and the seeing eye are equally the Lord's work. |
| N`aime pas le sommeil, de peur que tu ne deviennes pauvre; Ouvre les yeux, tu seras rassasié de pain. | Do not be a lover of sleep, or you will become poor: keep your eyes open, and you will have bread enough. |
| Mauvais! mauvais! dit l`acheteur; Et en s`en allant, il se félicite. | A poor thing, a poor thing, says he who is giving money for goods: but when he has gone on his way, then he makes clear his pride in what he has got. |
| Il y a de l`or et beaucoup de perles; Mais les lèvres savantes sont un objet précieux. | There is gold and a store of corals: but the lips of knowledge are a jewel of great price. |
| Prends son vêtement, car il a cautionné autrui; Exige de lui des gages, à cause des étrangers. | Take a man's clothing if he makes himself responsible for a strange man, and get an undertaking from him who gives his word for strange men. |
| Le pain du mensonge est doux à l`homme, Et plus tard sa bouche est remplie de gravier. | Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but after, his mouth will be full of sand. |
| Les projets s`affermissent par le conseil; Fais la guerre avec prudence. | Every purpose is put into effect by wise help: and by wise guiding make war. |
| Celui qui répand la calomnie dévoile les secrets; Ne te mêle pas avec celui qui ouvre ses lèvres. | He who goes about talking of the business of others gives away secrets: so have nothing to do with him whose lips are open wide. |
| Si quelqu`un maudit son père et sa mère, Sa lampe s`éteindra au milieu des ténèbres. | If anyone puts a curse on his father or his mother, his light will be put out in the blackest night. |
| Un héritage promptement acquis dès l`origine Ne sera pas béni quand viendra la fin. | A heritage may be got quickly at first, but the end of it will not be a blessing. |
| Ne dis pas: Je rendrai le mal. Espère en l`Éternel, et il te délivrera. | Do not say, I will give punishment for evil: go on waiting for the Lord, and he will be your saviour. |
| L`Éternel a en horreur deux sortes de poids, Et la balance fausse n`est pas une chose bonne. | Unequal weights are disgusting to the Lord, and false scales are not good. |
| C`est l`Éternel qui dirige les pas de l`homme, Mais l`homme peut-il comprendre sa voie? | A man's steps are of the Lord; how then may a man have knowledge of his way? |
| C`est un piège pour l`homme que de prendre à la légère un engagement sacré, Et de ne réfléchir qu`après avoir fait un voeu. | It is a danger to a man to say without thought, It is holy, and, after taking his oaths, to be questioning if it is necessary to keep them. |
| Un roi sage dissipe les méchants, Et fait passer sur eux la roue. | A wise king puts evil-doers to flight, and makes their evil-doing come back on them. |
| Le souffle de l`homme est une lampe de l`Éternel; Il pénètre jusqu`au fond des entrailles. | The Lord keeps watch over the spirit of man, searching all the deepest parts of the body. |
| La bonté et la fidélité gardent le roi, Et il soutient son trône par la bonté. | Mercy and good faith keep the king safe, and the seat of his power is based on upright acts. |
| La force est la gloire des jeunes gens, Et les cheveux blancs sont l`ornement des vieillards. | The glory of young men is their strength, and the honour of old men is their grey hairs. |
| Les plaies d`une blessure sont un remède pour le méchant; De même les coups qui pénètrent jusqu`au fond des entrailles. | By the wounds of the rod evil is taken away, and blows make clean the deepest parts of the body. |
