Le coeur du roi est un courant d`eau dans la main de l`Éternel; Il l`incline partout où il veut. | The king's heart in the hands of the Lord is like the water streams, and by him it is turned in any direction at his pleasure. |
Toutes les voies de l`homme sont droites à ses yeux; Mais celui qui pèse les coeurs, c`est l`Éternel. | Every way of a man seems right to himself, but the Lord is the tester of hearts. |
La pratique de la justice et de l`équité, Voilà ce que l`Éternel préfère aux sacrifices. | To do what is right and true is more pleasing to the Lord than an offering. |
Des regards hautains et un coeur qui s`enfle, Cette lampe des méchants, ce n`est que péché. | A high look and a heart of pride, *** of the evil-doer is sin. |
Les projets de l`homme diligent ne mènent qu`à l`abondance, Mais celui qui agit avec précipitation n`arrive qu`à la disette. | The purposes of the man of industry have their outcome only in wealth; but one who is over-quick in acting will only come to be in need. |
Des trésors acquis par une langue mensongère Sont une vanité fugitive et l`avant-coureur de la mort. | He who gets stores of wealth by a false tongue, is going after what is only breath, and searching for death. |
La violence des méchants les emporte, Parce qu`ils refusent de faire ce qui est juste. | By their violent acts the evil-doers will be pulled away, because they have no desire to do what is right. |
Le coupable suit des voies détournées, Mais l`innocent agit avec droiture. | Twisted is the way of him who is full of crime; but as for him whose heart is clean, his work is upright. |
Mieux vaut habiter à l`angle d`un toit, Que de partager la demeure d`une femme querelleuse. | It is better to be living in an angle of the house-top, than with a bitter-tongued woman in a wide house. |
L`âme du méchant désire le mal; Son ami ne trouve pas grâce à ses yeux. | The desire of the evil-doer is fixed on evil: he has no kind feeling for his neighbour. |
Quand on châtie le moqueur, le sot devient sage; Et quand on instruit le sage, il accueille la science. | When the man of pride undergoes punishment, the simple man gets wisdom; and by watching the wise he gets knowledge. |
Le juste considère la maison du méchant; L`Éternel précipite les méchants dans le malheur. | The Upright One, looking on the house of the evil-doer, lets sinners be overturned to their destruction. |
Celui qui ferme son oreille au cri du pauvre Criera lui-même et n`aura point de réponse. | He whose ears are stopped at the cry of the poor, will himself get no answer to his cry for help. |
Un don fait en secret apaise la colère, Et un présent fait en cachette calme une fureur violente. | By a secret offering wrath is turned away, and the heat of angry feelings by money in the folds of the robe. |
C`est une joie pour le juste de pratiquer la justice, Mais la ruine est pour ceux qui font le mal. | It is a joy to the good man to do right, but it is destruction to the workers of evil. |
L`homme qui s`écarte du chemin de la sagesse Reposera dans l`assemblée des morts. | The wanderer from the way of knowledge will have his resting-place among the shades. |
Celui qui aime la joie reste dans l`indigence; Celui qui aime le vin et l`huile ne s`enrichit pas. | The lover of pleasure will be a poor man: the lover of wine and oil will not get wealth. |
Le méchant sert de rançon pour le juste, Et le perfide pour les hommes droits. | The evil-doer will be given as a price for the life of the good man, and the worker of deceit in the place of the upright. |
Mieux vaut habiter dans une terre déserte, Qu`avec une femme querelleuse et irritable. | It is better to be living in a waste land, than with a bitter-tongued and angry woman. |
De précieux trésors et de l`huile sont dans la demeure du sage; Mais l`homme insensé les engloutit. | There is a store of great value in the house of the wise, but it is wasted by the foolish man. |
Celui qui poursuit la justice et la bonté Trouve la vie, la justice et la gloire. | He who goes after righteousness and mercy will get life, righteousness, and honour. |
Le sage monte dans la ville des héros, Et il abat la force qui lui donnait de l`assurance. | A wise man goes up into the town of the strong ones, and overcomes its strength in which they put their faith. |
Celui qui veille sur sa bouche et sur sa langue Préserve son âme des angoisses. | He who keeps watch over his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles. |
L`orgueilleux, le hautain, s`appelle un moqueur; Il agit avec la fureur de l`arrogance. | The man of pride, lifted up in soul, is named high-hearted; he is acting in an outburst of pride. |
Les désirs du paresseux le tuent, Parce que ses mains refusent de travailler; | The desire of the hater of work is death to him, for his hands will do no work. |
Tout le jour il éprouve des désirs; Mais le juste donne sans parcimonie. | All the day the sinner goes after his desire: but the upright man gives freely, keeping nothing back. |
Le sacrifice des méchants est quelque chose d`abominable; Combien plus quand ils l`offrent avec des pensées criminelles! | The offering of evil-doers is disgusting: how much more when they give it with an evil purpose! |
Le témoin menteur périra, Mais l`homme qui écoute parlera toujours. | A false witness will be cut off, ... |
Le méchant prend un air effronté, Mais l`homme droit affermit sa voie. | The evil-doer makes his face hard, but as for the upright, he gives thought to his way. |
Il n`y a ni sagesse, ni intelligence, Ni conseil, en face de l`Éternel. | Wisdom and knowledge and wise suggestions are of no use against the Lord. |
Le cheval est équipé pour le jour de la bataille, Mais la délivrance appartient à l`Éternel. | The horse is made ready for the day of war, but power to overcome is from the Lord. |
