Proverbs 22
|
La réputation est préférable à de grandes richesses, Et la grâce vaut mieux que l`argent et que l`or. | A good name is more to be desired than great wealth, and to be respected is better than silver and gold. |
Le riche et le pauvre se rencontrent; C`est l`Éternel qui les a faits l`un et l`autre. | The man of wealth and the poor man come face to face: the Lord is the maker of them all. |
L`homme prudent voit le mal et se cache, Mais les simples avancent et sont punis. | The sharp man sees the evil and takes cover: the simple go straight on and get into trouble. |
Le fruit de l`humilité, de la crainte de l`Éternel, C`est la richesse, la gloire et la vie. | The reward of a gentle spirit and the fear of the Lord is wealth and honour and life. |
Des épines, des pièges sont sur la voie de l`homme pervers; Celui qui garde son âme s`en éloigne. | Thorns and nets are in the way of the twisted: he who keeps watch over his soul will be far from them. |
Instruis l`enfant selon la voie qu`il doit suivre; Et quand il sera vieux, il ne s`en détournera pas. | If a child is trained up in the right way, even when he is old he will not be turned away from it. |
Le riche domine sur les pauvres, Et celui qui emprunte est l`esclave de celui qui prête. | The man of wealth has rule over the poor, and he who gets into debt is a servant to his creditor. |
Celui qui sème l`iniquité moissonne l`iniquité, Et la verge de sa fureur disparaît. | By planting the seed of evil a man will get in the grain of sorrow, and the rod of his wrath will be broken. |
L`homme dont le regard est bienveillant sera béni, Parce qu`il donne de son pain au pauvre. | He who is kind will have a blessing, for he gives of his bread to the poor. |
Chasse le moqueur, et la querelle prendra fin; Les disputes et les outrages cesseront. | Send away the man of pride, and argument will go out; truly fighting and shame will come to an end. |
Celui qui aime la pureté du coeur, Et qui a la grâce sur les lèvres, a le roi pour ami. | He whose heart is clean is dear to the Lord; for the grace of his lips the king will be his friend. |
Les yeux de l`Éternel gardent la science, Mais il confond les paroles du perfide. | The eyes of the Lord keep knowledge, but by him the acts of the false man will be overturned. |
Le paresseux dit: Il y a un lion dehors! Je serai tué dans les rues! | The hater of work says, There is a lion outside: I will be put to death in the streets. |
La bouche des étrangères est une fosse profonde; Celui contre qui l`Éternel est irrité y tombera. | The mouth of strange women is a deep hole: he with whom the Lord is angry will go down into it. |
La folie est attachée au coeur de l`enfant; La verge de la correction l`éloignera de lui. | Foolish ways are deep-seated in the heart of a child, but the rod of punishment will send them far from him. |
Opprimer le pauvre pour augmenter son bien, C`est donner au riche pour n`arriver qu`à la disette. | He who is cruel to the poor for the purpose of increasing his profit, and he who gives to the man of wealth, will only come to be in need. |
Prête l`oreille, et écoute les paroles des sages; Applique ton coeur à ma science. | Let your ear be bent down for hearing my words, and let your heart give thought to knowledge. |
Car il est bon que tu les gardes au dedans de toi, Et qu`elles soient toutes présentes sur tes lèvres. | For it is a delight to keep them in your heart, to have them ready on your lips. |
Afin que ta confiance repose sur l`Éternel, Je veux t`instruire aujourd`hui, oui, toi. | So that your faith may be in the Lord, I have made them clear to you this day, even to you. |
N`ai-je pas déjà pour toi mis par écrit Des conseils et des réflexions, | Have I not put in writing for you thirty sayings, with wise suggestions and knowledge, |
Pour t`enseigner des choses sûres, des paroles vraies, Afin que tu répondes par des paroles vraies à celui qui t`envoie? | To make you see how certain are true words, so that you may give a true answer to those who put questions to you? |
Ne dépouille pas le pauvre, parce qu`il est pauvre, Et n`opprime pas le malheureux à la porte; | Do not take away the property of the poor man because he is poor, or be cruel to the crushed ones when they come before the judge: |
Car l`Éternel défendra leur cause, Et il ôtera la vie à ceux qui les auront dépouillés. | For the Lord will give support to their cause, and take the life of those who take their goods. |
Ne fréquente pas l`homme colère, Ne va pas avec l`homme violent, | Do not be friends with a man who is given to wrath; do not go in the company of an angry man: |
De peur que tu ne t`habitues à ses sentiers, Et qu`ils ne deviennent un piège pour ton âme. | For fear of learning his ways and making a net ready for your soul. |
Ne sois pas parmi ceux qui prennent des engagements, Parmi ceux qui cautionnent pour des dettes; | Be not one of those who give their hands in an agreement, or of those who make themselves responsible for debts: |
Si tu n`as pas de quoi payer, Pourquoi voudrais-tu qu`on enlève ton lit de dessous toi? | If you have nothing with which to make payment, he will take away your bed from under you. |
Ne déplace pas la borne ancienne, Que tes pères ont posée. | Let not the old landmark be moved which your fathers have put in place. |
Si tu vois un homme habile dans son ouvrage, Il se tient auprès des rois; Il ne se tient pas auprès des gens obscurs. | Have you seen a man who is expert in his business? he will take his place before kings; his place will not be among low persons. |
