| Louez l`Éternel, car il est bon, Car sa miséricorde dure à toujours! | O give praise to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy is unchanging for ever. |
| Qu`ainsi disent les rachetés de l`Éternel, Ceux qu`il a délivrés de la main de l`ennemi, | Let those whose cause the Lord has taken up say so, his people whom he has taken out of the hands of their haters; |
| Et qu`il a rassemblés de tous les pays, De l`orient et de l`occident, du nord et de la mer! | Making them come together out of all the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. |
| Ils erraient dans le désert, ils marchaient dans la solitude, Sans trouver une ville où ils pussent habiter. | They were wandering in the waste places; they saw no way to a resting-place. |
| Ils souffraient de la faim et de la soif; Leur âme était languissante. | Their souls became feeble for need of food and drink. |
| Dans leur détresse, ils crièrent à l`Éternel, Et il les délivra de leurs angoisses; | Then they sent up their cry to the Lord in their sorrow, and he gave them salvation out of all their troubles; |
| Il les conduisit par le droit chemin, Pour qu`ils arrivassent dans une ville habitable. | Guiding them in the right way, so that they might come into the town of their resting-place. |
| Qu`ils louent l`Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l`homme! | Let men give praise to the Lord for his mercy, and for the wonders which he does for the children of men! |
| Car il a satisfait l`âme altérée, Il a comblé de biens l`âme affamée. | He gives its desire to the unresting soul, so that it is full of good things. |
| Ceux qui avaient pour demeure les ténèbres et l`ombre de la mort Vivaient captifs dans la misère et dans les chaînes, | Those who were in the dark, in the black night, in chains of sorrow and iron; |
| Parce qu`ils s`étaient révoltés contre les paroles de Dieu, Parce qu`ils avaient méprisé le conseil du Très Haut. | Because they went against the words of God, and gave no thought to the laws of the Most High: |
| Il humilia leur coeur par la souffrance; Ils succombèrent, et personne ne les secourut. | So that he made their hearts weighted down with grief; they were falling, and had no helper. |
| Dans leur détresse, ils crièrent à l`Éternel, Et il les délivra de leurs angoisses; | Then they sent up their cry to the Lord in their sorrow, and he gave them salvation out of all their troubles. |
| Il les fit sortir des ténèbres et de l`ombre de la mort, Et il rompit leurs liens. | He took them out of the dark and the black night, and all their chains were broken. |
| Qu`ils louent l`Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l`homme! | Let men give praise to the Lord for his mercy, and for the wonders which he does for the children of men! |
| Car il a brisé les portes d`airain, Il a rompu les verrous de fer. | The doors of brass are broken by his arm, and the bands of iron are cut in two. |
| Les insensés, par leur conduite coupable Et par leurs iniquités, s`étaient rendus malheureux. | Foolish men, because of their sins, and because of their wrongdoing, are troubled; |
| Leur âme avait en horreur toute nourriture, Et ils touchaient aux portes de la mort. | They are disgusted by all food, and they come near to the doors of death. |
| Dans leur détresse, ils crièrent à l`Éternel, Et il les délivra de leurs angoisses; | Then they send up their cry to the Lord in their sorrow, and he gives them salvation out of all their troubles. |
| Il envoya sa parole et les guérit, Il les fit échapper de la fosse. | He sent his word and made them well, and kept them safe from the underworld. |
| Qu`ils louent l`Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l`homme! | Let men give praise to the Lord for his mercy, and for the wonders which he does for the children of men! |
| Qu`ils offrent des sacrifices d`actions de grâces, Et qu`ils publient ses oeuvres avec des cris de joie! | Let them make offerings of praise, giving news of his works with cries of joy. |
| Ceux qui étaient descendus sur la mer dans des navires, Et qui travaillaient sur les grandes eaux, | Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business in the great waters; |
| Ceux-là virent les oeuvres de l`Éternel Et ses merveilles au milieu de l`abîme. | They see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep. |
| Il dit, et il fit souffler la tempête, Qui souleva les flots de la mer. | For at his word comes up the storm-wind, lifting high the waves. |
| Ils montaient vers les cieux, ils descendaient dans l`abîme; Leur âme était éperdue en face du danger; | The sailors go up to heaven, and down into the deep; their souls are wasted because of their trouble. |
| Saisis de vertige, ils chancelaient comme un homme ivre, Et toute leur habileté était anéantie. | They are turned here and there, rolling like a man who is full of wine; and all their wisdom comes to nothing. |

| Il arrêta la tempête, ramena le calme, Et les ondes se turent. | He makes the storm into a calm, so that the waves are at peace. |
| Ils se réjouirent de ce qu`elles s`étaient apaisées, Et l`Éternel les conduisit au port désiré. | Then they are glad, because the sea is quiet, and he takes them to the harbour of their desire. |
| Qu`ils louent l`Éternel pour sa bonté, Et pour ses merveilles en faveur des fils de l`homme! | Let men give praise to the Lord for his mercy, and for the wonders which he does for the children of men! |
| Qu`ils l`exaltent dans l`assemblée du peuple, Et qu`ils le célèbrent dans la réunion des anciens! | Let them give glory to him in the meeting of the people, and praise among the chiefs. |
| Il change les fleuves en désert, Et les sources d`eaux en terre desséchée, | He makes rivers into waste places, and springs of water into a dry land; |
| Le pays fertile en pays salé, A cause de la méchanceté de ses habitants. | He makes a fertile country into a salt waste, because of the sins of those who are living there. |
| Il change le désert en étang, Et la terre aride en sources d`eaux, | He makes a waste land into a place of water, and a dry land into water-springs. |
| Et il y établit ceux qui sont affamés. Ils fondent une ville pour l`habiter; | And there he gives the poor a resting-place, so that they may make themselves a town; |
| Ils ensemencent des champs, plantent des vignes, Et ils en recueillent les produits. | And put seed in the fields and make vine-gardens, to give them fruit. |
| Il les bénit, et ils deviennent très nombreux, Et il ne diminue point leur bétail. | He gives them his blessing so that they are increased greatly, and their cattle do not become less. |
| Sont-ils amoindris et humiliés Par l`oppression, le malheur et la souffrance; | And when they are made low, and crushed by trouble and sorrow, |
| Verse-t-il le mépris sur les grands, Les fait-il errer dans des déserts sans chemin, | He puts an end to the pride of kings, and sends them wandering in the waste lands where there is no way. |
| Il relève l`indigent et le délivre de la misère, Il multiplie les familles comme des troupeaux. | But he puts the poor man on high from his troubles, and gives him families like a flock. |
| Les hommes droits le voient et se réjouissent, Mais toute iniquité ferme la bouche. | The upright see it and are glad: the mouth of the sinner is stopped. |
| Que celui qui est sage prenne garde à ces choses, Et qu`il soit attentif aux bontés de l`Éternel. | Let the wise give thought to these things, and see the mercies of the Lord. |
