| Or la festa degli azzimi, detta la Pasqua, s’avvicinava; | Now the feast of unleavened bread was near, which is called the Passover. |
| e i capi sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano il modo di farlo morire, perché temevano il popolo. | And the chief priests and the scribes were looking for a chance to put him to death, but they went in fear of the people. |
| E Satana entrò in Giuda, chiamato Iscariota, che era del numero de’ dodici. | And Satan came into Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve. |
| Ed egli andò a conferire coi capi sacerdoti e i capitani sul come lo darebbe loro nelle mani. | And he went away and had a discussion with the chief priests and the rulers, about how he might give him up to them. |
| Ed essi se ne rallegrarono e pattuirono di dargli del denaro. | And they were glad, and undertook to give him money. |
| Ed egli prese l’impegno, e cercava l’opportunità di farlo di nascosto alla folla. | And he made an agreement with them to give him up to them, if he got a chance, when the people were not present. |
| Or venne il giorno degli azzimi, nel quale si dovea sacrificar la Pasqua. | And the day of unleavened bread came, when the Passover lamb is put to death. |
| E Gesù mandò Pietro e Giovanni, dicendo: Andate a prepararci la pasqua, affinché la mangiamo. | And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, Go and make the Passover ready for us, so that we may take it. |
| Ed essi gli dissero: Dove vuoi che la prepariamo? | And they said to him, Where are we to get it ready? |
| Ed egli disse loro: Ecco, quando sarete entrati nella città, vi verrà incontro un uomo che porterà una brocca d’acqua; seguitelo nella casa dov’egli entrerà. | And he said to them, When you go into the town you will see a man coming to you with a vessel of water; go after him into the house into which he goes. |
| E dite al padron di casa: Il Maestro ti manda a dire: Dov’è la stanza nella quale mangerò la pasqua co’ miei discepoli? | And say to the master of the house, The Master says, Where is the guest-room, where I may take the Passover with my disciples? |
| Ed egli vi mostrerà di sopra una gran sala ammobiliata; quivi apparecchiate. | And he will take you up to a great room with a table and seats: there make ready. |
| Ed essi andarono e trovaron com’egli avea lor detto, e prepararon la pasqua. | And they went, and it was as he had said: and they made the Passover ready. |
| E quando l’ora fu venuta, egli si mise a tavola, e gli apostoli con lui. | And when the time had come, he took his seat, and the Apostles with him. |
| Ed egli disse loro: Ho grandemente desiderato di mangiar questa pasqua con voi, prima ch’io soffra; | And he said, I have had a great desire to keep this Passover with you before I come to my death; |
| poiché io vi dico che non la mangerò più finché sia compiuta nel regno di Dio. | For I say to you, I will not take it till it is made complete in the kingdom of God. |
| E avendo preso un calice, rese grazie e disse: Prendete questo e distribuitelo fra voi; | And he took a cup and, having given praise, he said, Make division of this among yourselves; |
| perché io vi dico che oramai non berrò più del frutto della vigna, finché sia venuto il regno di Dio. | For I say to you, I will not take of the fruit of the vine till the kingdom of God has come. |
| Poi, avendo preso del pane, rese grazie e lo ruppe e lo diede loro, dicendo: Questo è il mio corpo il quale è dato per voi: fate questo in memoria di me. | And he took bread and, having given praise, he gave it to them when it had been broken, saying, This is my body, which is given for you: do this in memory of me. |
| Parimente ancora, dopo aver cenato, dette loro il calice dicendo: Questo calice è il nuovo patto nel mio sangue, il quale è sparso per voi. | And in the same way, after the meal, he took the cup, saying, This cup is the new testament, made with my blood which is given for you. |
| Del resto, ecco, la mano di colui che mi tradisce e meco a tavola. | But the hand of him who is false to me is with me at the table. |
| Poiché il Figliuol dell’uomo, certo, se ne va, secondo che è determinato; ma guai a quell’uomo dal quale è tradito! | For it will be done to the Son of man after the purpose of God, but unhappy is that man by whom he is given up. |
| Ed essi cominciarono a domandarsi gli uni agli altri chi sarebbe mai quel di loro che farebbe questo. | And they were wondering among themselves which of them it was who would do this thing. |
| Nacque poi anche una contesa fra loro per sapere chi di loro fosse reputato il maggiore. | And there was an argument among them about which of them was the greatest. |
| Ma egli disse loro: I re delle nazioni le signoreggiano, e quelli che hanno autorità su di esse son chiamati benefattori. | And he said, The kings of the Gentiles are lords over them, and those who have authority are given names of honour. |
| Ma tra voi non ha da esser così; anzi, il maggiore fra voi sia come il minore, e chi governa come colui che serve. | But let it not be so with you; but he who is greater, let him become like the younger; and he who is chief, like a servant. |
| Poiché, chi è maggiore, colui che è a tavola oppur colui che serve? Non è forse colui che e a tavola? Ma io sono in mezzo a voi come colui che serve. | For which is greater, the guest who is seated at a meal or the servant who is waiting on him? is it not the guest? but I am among you as a servant. |
| Or voi siete quelli che avete perseverato meco nelle mie prove; | But you are those who have kept with me through my troubles; |
| e io dispongo che vi sia dato un regno, come il Padre mio ha disposto che fosse dato a me, | And I will give you a kingdom as my Father has given one to me, |
| affinché mangiate e beviate alla mia tavola nel mio regno, e sediate su troni, giudicando le dodici tribù d’Israele. | So that you may take food and drink at my table in my kingdom, and be seated like kings, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
| Simone, Simone, ecco, Satana ha chiesto di vagliarvi come si vaglia il grano; | Simon, Simon, Satan has made a request to have you, so that he may put you to the test as grain is tested: |
| ma io ho pregato per te affinché la tua fede non venga meno; e tu, quando sarai convertito, conferma i tuoi fratelli. | But I have made prayer for you, that your faith may not go from you: and when you are turned again, make your brothers strong. |
| Ma egli gli disse: Signore, con te son pronto ad andare e in prigione e alla morte. | And he said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death. |
| E Gesù: Pietro, io ti dico che oggi il gallo non canterà, prima che tu abbia negato tre volte di conoscermi. | And he said, I say to you, Peter, before the cock's second cry today, you will say three times that you have no knowledge of me. |
| Poi disse loro: Quando vi mandai senza borsa, senza sacca da viaggio e senza calzari, vi mancò mai niente? Ed essi risposero: Niente. Ed egli disse loro: | And he said to them, When I sent you out without money or bag or shoes, were you in need of anything? And they said, Nothing. |
| Ma ora, chi ha una borsa la prenda; e parimente una sacca; e chi non ha spada, venda il mantello e ne compri una. | And he said to them, But now, he who has a money-bag, or a bag for food, let him take it: and he who has not, let him give his coat for money and get a sword. |
| Poiché io vi dico che questo che è scritto deve esser adempito in me: Ed egli è stato annoverato tra i malfattori. Infatti, le cose che si riferiscono a me stanno per compiersi. | For I say to you that these words will be put into effect in me, And he was numbered among the evil-doers: for what has been said in the Writings about me has an end. |
| Ed essi dissero: Signore, ecco qui due spade! Ma egli disse loro: Basta! | And they said, Lord, here are two swords. And he said, It is enough. |
| Poi, essendo uscito, andò, secondo il suo solito, al monte degli Ulivi; e anche i discepoli lo seguirono. | And he came out, and went, as his way was, to the Mountain of Olives, and the disciples went with him. |
| E giunto che fu sul luogo, disse loro: Pregate, chiedendo di non entrare in tentazione. | And when he came to the place, he said to them, Make a prayer that you may not be put to the test. |
| Ed egli si staccò da loro circa un tiro di sasso; e postosi in ginocchio pregava, dicendo: | And he went a little distance away from them and, falling on his knees in prayer, he said, |
| Padre, se tu vuoi, allontana da me questo calice! Però, non la mia volontà, ma la tua sia fatta. | Father, if it is your pleasure, take this cup from me: but still, let your pleasure, not mine, be done. |
| E un angelo gli apparve dal cielo a confortarlo. | And an angel from heaven came to him, to give him strength. |
| Ed essendo in agonia, egli pregava vie più intensamente; e il suo sudore divenne come grosse gocce di sangue che cadeano in terra. | And being in great trouble of soul, the force of his prayer became stronger, and great drops, like blood, came from him, falling to the earth. |
| E alzatosi dall’orazione, venne ai discepoli e li trovò che dormivano di tristezza, | And, getting up from prayer, he came to the disciples, and saw that they were sleeping for sorrow. |
| e disse loro: Perché dormite? Alzatevi e pregate, affinché non entriate in tentazione. | And he said, Why are you sleeping? Get up, and give yourselves to prayer, so that you may not be put to the test. |
| Mentre parlava ancora, ecco una turba; e colui che si chiamava Giuda, uno dei dodici, la precedeva, e si accostò a Gesù per baciarlo. | And while he was saying these words, there came a band of people, and Judas, one of the twelve, was in front of them, and he came near to Jesus to give him a kiss. |
| Ma Gesù gli disse: Giuda, tradisci tu il Figliuol dell’uomo con un bacio? | But Jesus said to him, Judas, will you be false to the Son of man with a kiss? |
| E quelli ch’eran con lui, vedendo quel che stava per succedere, dissero: Signore, percoterem noi con la spada? | And when those who were with him saw what was coming, they said, Lord, may we not make use of our swords? |
| E uno di loro percosse il servitore del sommo sacerdote, e gli spiccò l’orecchio destro. | And one of them gave a blow to the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. |
| Ma Gesù rivolse loro la parola e disse: Lasciate, basta! E toccato l’orecchio di colui, lo guarì. | But Jesus, answering, said, Put up with this, at least. And touching his ear, he made it well. |
| E Gesù disse ai capi sacerdoti e ai capitani del tempio e agli anziani che eran venuti contro a lui: Voi siete usciti con spade e bastoni, come contro a un ladrone; | And Jesus said to the chief priests and the captains of the Temple and the rulers, who had come against him, Have you come out as against a thief, with swords and sticks? |
| mentre ero ogni giorno con voi nel tempio, non mi avete mai messe le mani addosso; ma questa è l’ora vostra e la potestà delle tenebre. | When I was in the Temple with you every day, your hands were not stretched out against me: but this is your hour, and the authority of the dark power. |
| E presolo, lo menaron via e lo condussero dentro la casa del sommo sacerdote; e Pietro seguiva da lontano. | And they made him a prisoner and took him away to the house of the high priest. But Peter went after them at a distance. |
| E avendo essi acceso un fuoco in mezzo alla corte ed essendosi posti a sedere insieme, Pietro si sedette in mezzo a loro. | And a fire was lighted in the middle of the open square, and they were seated together, and Peter was among them. |
| E una certa serva, vedutolo sedere presso il fuoco, e avendolo guardato fisso, disse: Anche costui era con lui. | And a certain woman-servant, seeing him in the light of the fire, and looking at him with attention, said, This man was with him. |
| Ma egli negò, dicendo: Donna, io non lo conosco. | But he said, Woman, it is not true; I have no knowledge of him. |
| E poco dopo, un altro, vedutolo, disse: Anche tu sei di quelli. Ma Pietro rispose: O uomo, non lo sono. | And after a little time, another saw him and said, You are one of them; and he said, Man, I am not. |
| E trascorsa circa un’ora, un altro affermava lo stesso, dicendo: Certo, anche costui era con lui, poich’egli è Galileo. | And after about an hour, another man said, with decision, Certainly this man was with him, for he is a Galilaean. |
| Ma Pietro disse: O uomo, io non so quel che tu ti dica. E subito, mentr’egli parlava ancora, il gallo cantò. | And Peter said, Man, I have no knowledge of these things of which you are talking. And straight away, while he was saying these words, there came the cry of a cock. |
| E il Signore, voltatosi, riguardò Pietro; e Pietro si ricordò della parola del Signore com’ei gli avea detto: Prima che il gallo canti oggi, tu mi rinnegherai tre volte. | And the Lord, turning, gave Peter a look. And the words of the Lord came to Peter's mind, how he had said, This night, before the hour of the cock's cry, you will be false to me three times. |
| E uscito fuori pianse amaramente. | And he went out, weeping bitterly. |
| E gli uomini che tenevano Gesù, lo schernivano percuotendolo; | And the men in whose hands Jesus was, made sport of him and gave him blows. |
| e avendolo bendato gli domandavano: Indovina, profeta, chi t’ha percosso? | And, covering his eyes, they said to him, Are you prophet enough to say who gave you that blow? |
| E molte altre cose dicevano contro a lui, bestemmiando. | And they said a number of other evil things against him. |
| E come fu giorno, gli anziani del popolo, i capi sacerdoti e gli scribi si adunarono, e lo menarono nel loro Sinedrio, dicendo: | And when it was day, the rulers of the people came together, with the chief priests and the scribes, and they took him before their Sanhedrin, saying, |
| Se tu sei il Cristo, diccelo. Ma egli disse loro: Se ve lo dicessi, non credereste; | If you are the Christ, say so. But he said, If I say so you will not have belief; |
| e se io vi facessi delle domande, non rispondereste. | And if I put a question to you, you will not give an answer. |
| Ma da ora innanzi il Figliuol dell’uomo sarà seduto alla destra della potenza di Dio. | But in the future the Son of man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God. |
| E tutti dissero: Sei tu dunque il Figliuol di Dio? Ed egli rispose loro: Voi lo dite, poiché io lo sono. | And they all said, Are you then the Son of God? and he said, You say that I am. |
| E quelli dissero: Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimonianza? Noi stessi l’abbiamo udito dalla sua propria bocca. | And they said, What more need have we of witness? we have the very words of his mouth. |
