| Ed accostatisi a lui i Farisei e i Sadducei, per metterlo alla prova, gli chiesero di mostrar loro un segno dal cielo. | And the Pharisees and Sadducees came and, testing him, made a request to him to give them a sign from heaven. |
| Ma egli, rispondendo, disse loro: Quando si fa sera, voi dite: Bel tempo, perché il cielo rosseggia! | But in answer he said to them, At nightfall you say, The weather will be good, for the sky is red. |
| e la mattina dite: Oggi tempesta, perché il cielo rosseggia cupo! L’aspetto del cielo lo sapete dunque discernere, e i segni de’ tempi non arrivate a discernerli? | And in the morning, The weather will be bad today, for the sky is red and angry. You are able to see the face of heaven, but not the signs of the times. |
| Questa generazione malvagia e adultera chiede un segno, e segno non le sarà dato se non quello di Giona. E, lasciatili, se ne andò. | An evil and false generation is searching after a sign; and no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. And he went away from them. |
| Or i discepoli, passati all’altra riva, s’erano dimenticati di prender de’ pani. | And when the disciples came to the other side they had not taken thought to get bread. |
| E Gesù disse loro: Vedete di guardarvi dal lievito de’ Farisei e de’ Sadducei. | And Jesus said to them, Take care to have nothing to do with the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. |
| Ed essi ragionavan fra loro e dicevano: Egli è perché non abbiam preso de’ pani. | And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, We took no bread. |
| Ma Gesù, accortosene, disse: O gente di poca fede, perché ragionate fra voi del non aver de’ pani? | And Jesus, seeing it, said, O you of little faith, why are you reasoning among yourselves, because you have no bread? |
| Non capite ancora e non vi ricordate de’ cinque pani dei cinquemila uomini e quante ceste ne levaste? | Do you still not see, or keep in mind the five cakes of bread of the five thousand, and the number of baskets you took up? |
| né dei sette pani de’ quattromila uomini e quanti panieri ne levaste? | Or the seven cakes of bread of the four thousand, and the number of baskets you took up? |
| Come mai non capite che non è di pani ch’io vi parlavo? Ma guardatevi dal lievito de’ Farisei e de’ Sadducei. | How is it that you do not see that I was not talking to you about bread, but about keeping away from the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees? |
| Allora intesero che non avea loro detto di guardarsi dal lievito del pane, ma dalla dottrina dei Farisei e de’ Sadducei. | Then they saw that it was not the leaven of bread which he had in mind, but the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. |
| Poi Gesù, venuto nelle parti di Cesarea di Filippo, domandò ai suoi discepoli: Chi dice la gente che sia il Figliuol dell’uomo? | Now when Jesus had come into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, he said, questioning his disciples, Who do men say that the Son of man is? |
| Ed essi risposero: Gli uni dicono Giovanni Battista; altri, Elia; altri, Geremia o uno dei profeti. Ed egli disse loro: E voi, chi dite ch’io sia? | And they said, Some say, John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. |
| Simon Pietro, rispondendo, disse: | He says to them, But who do you say that I am? |
| Tu sei il Cristo, il Figliuol dell’Iddio vivente. | And Simon Peter made answer and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. |
| E Gesù, replicando, gli disse: Tu sei beato, o Simone, figliuol di Giona, perché non la carne e il sangue t’hanno rivelato questo, ma il Padre mio che è nei cieli. | And Jesus made answer and said to him, A blessing on you, Simon Bar-jonah: because this knowledge has not come to you from flesh and blood, but from my Father in heaven. |
| E io altresì ti dico: Tu sei Pietro, e su questa pietra edificherò la mia Chiesa, e le porte dell’Ades non la potranno vincere. | And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock will my church be based, and the doors of hell will not overcome it. |
| Io ti darò le chiavi del regno dei cieli; e tutto ciò che avrai legato sulla terra sarà legato ne’ cieli, e tutto ciò che avrai sciolto in terra sarà sciolto ne’ cieli. | I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatever is fixed by you on earth will be fixed in heaven: and whatever you make free on earth will be made free in heaven. |
| Allora vietò ai suoi discepoli di dire ad alcuno ch’egli era il Cristo. | Then he gave orders to the disciples to give no man word that he was the Christ. |
| Da quell’ora Gesù cominciò a dichiarare ai suoi discepoli che doveva andare a Gerusalemme e soffrir molte cose dagli anziani, dai capi sacerdoti e dagli scribi, ed esser ucciso, e risuscitare il terzo giorno. | From that time Jesus went on to make clear to his disciples how he would have to go up to Jerusalem, and undergo much at the hands of those in authority and the chief priests and scribes, and be put to death, and the third day come again from the dead. |
| E Pietro, trattolo da parte, cominciò a rimproverarlo, dicendo: Tolga ciò Iddio, Signore; questo non ti avverrà mai. | And Peter, protesting, said to him, Be it far from you, Lord; it is impossible that this will come about. |
| Ma Gesù, rivoltosi, disse a Pietro: Vattene via da me, Satana; tu mi sei di scandalo. Tu non hai il senso delle cose di Dio, ma delle cose degli uomini. | But he, turning to Peter, said, Get out of my way, Satan: you are a danger to me because your mind is not on the things of God, but on the things of men. |
| Allora Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli: Se uno vuol venire dietro a me, rinunzi a se stesso e prenda la sua croce e mi segua. | Then Jesus said to his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him give up all, and take up his cross, and come after me. |
| Perché chi vorrà salvare la sua vita, la perderà; ma chi avrà perduto la sua vita per amor mio, la troverà. | Because whoever has a desire to keep his life safe will have it taken from him; but whoever gives up his life because of me, will have it given back to him. |
| E che gioverà egli a un uomo se, dopo aver guadagnato tutto il mondo, perde poi l’anima sua? O che darà l’uomo in cambio dell’anima sua? | For what profit has a man, if he gets all the world with the loss of his life? or what will a man give in exchange for his life? |
| Perché il Figliuol dell’uomo verrà nella gloria del Padre suo, con i suoi angeli, ed allora renderà a ciascuno secondo l’opera sua. | For the Son of man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he will give to every man the reward of his works. |
| In verità io vi dico che alcuni di coloro che son qui presenti non gusteranno la morte, finché non abbian visto il Figliuol dell’uomo venire nel suo regno. | Truly I say to you, There are some of those here who will not have a taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. |
