| La donna savia edifica la sua casa, ma la stolta l’abbatte con le proprie mani. | Wisdom is building her house, but the foolish woman is pulling it down with her hands. |
| Chi cammina nella rettitudine teme l’Eterno, ma chi è pervertito nelle sue vie lo sprezza. | He who goes on his way in righteousness has before him the fear of the Lord; but he whose ways are twisted gives him no honour. |
| Nella bocca dello stolto germoglia la superbia, ma le labbra dei savi son la loro custodia. | In the mouth of the foolish man is a rod for his back, but the lips of the wise will keep them safe. |
| Dove mancano i buoi è vuoto il granaio, ma l’abbondanza della raccolta sta nella forza del bove. | Where there are no oxen, their food-place is clean; but much increase comes through the strength of the ox. |
| Il testimonio fedele non mentisce, ma il testimonio falso spaccia menzogne. | A true witness does not say what is false, but a false witness is breathing out deceit. |
| Il beffardo cerca la sapienza e non la trova, ma per l’uomo intelligente la scienza è cosa facile. | The hater of authority, searching for wisdom, does not get it; but knowledge comes readily to the open-minded man. |
| Vattene lungi dallo stolto; sulle sue labbra certo non hai trovato scienza. | Go away from the foolish man, for you will not see the lips of knowledge. |
| La sapienza dell’uomo accorto sta nel discernere la propria strada, ma la follia degli stolti non è che inganno. | The wisdom of the man of good sense makes his way clear; but the unwise behaviour of the foolish is deceit. |
| Gli insensati si burlano delle colpe commesse, ma il favore dell’Eterno sta fra gli uomini retti. | In the tents of those hating authority there is error, but in the house of the upright man there is grace. |
| Il cuore conosce la sua propria amarezza, e alla sua gioia non può prender parte un estraneo. | No one has knowledge of a man's grief but himself; and a strange person has no part in his joy. |
| La casa degli empi sarà distrutta, ma la tenda degli uomini retti fiorirà. | The house of the sinner will be overturned, but the tent of the upright man will do well. |
| V’è tal via che all’uomo par diritta, ma finisce col menare alla morte. | There is a way which seems straight before a man, but its end is the ways of death. |
| Anche ridendo, il cuore può esser triste; e l’allegrezza può finire in dolore. | Even while laughing the heart may be sad; and after joy comes sorrow. |
| Lo sviato di cuore avrà la ricompensa dal suo modo di vivere, e l’uomo dabbene, quella delle opere sue. | He whose heart is turned away will have the reward of his ways in full measure; but a good man will have the reward of his doings. |
| Lo scemo crede tutto quel che si dice, ma l’uomo prudente bada ai suoi passi. | The simple man has faith in every word, but the man of good sense gives thought to his footsteps. |
| Il savio teme, ed evita il male; ma lo stolto è arrogante e presuntuoso. | The wise man, fearing, keeps himself from evil; but the foolish man goes on in his pride, with no thought of danger. |
| Chi è pronto all’ira commette follie, e l’uomo pien di malizia diventa odioso. | He who is quickly angry will do what is foolish, but the man of good sense will have quiet. |
| Gli scemi ereditano stoltezza, ma i prudenti s’incoronano di scienza. | Foolish behaviour is the heritage of the simple, but men of good sense are crowned with knowledge. |
| I malvagi si chinano dinanzi ai buoni, e gli empi alle porte de’ giusti. | The knees of the evil are bent before the good; and sinners go down in the dust at the doors of the upright. |
| Il povero è odiato anche dal suo compagno, ma gli amici del ricco son molti. | The poor man is hated even by his neighbour, but the man of wealth has numbers of friends. |
| Chi sprezza il prossimo pecca, ma beato chi ha pietà dei miseri! | He who has no respect for his neighbour is a sinner, but he who has pity for the poor is happy. |
| Quelli che meditano il male non son forse traviati? ma quelli che meditano il bene trovan grazia e fedeltà. | Will not the designers of evil come into error? But mercy and good faith are for the designers of good. |
| In ogni fatica v’è profitto, ma il chiacchierare mena all’indigenza. | In all hard work there is profit, but talk only makes a man poor. |
| La corona de’ savi è la loro ricchezza, ma la follia degli stolti non è che follia. | Their wisdom is a crown to the wise, but their foolish behaviour is round the head of the unwise. |
| Il testimonio verace salva delle vite, ma chi spaccia bugie non fa che ingannare. | A true witness is the saviour of lives; but he who says false things is a cause of deceit. |
| V’è una gran sicurezza nel timor dell’Eterno; Egli sarà un rifugio per i figli di chi lo teme. | For him in whose heart is the fear of the Lord there is strong hope: and his children will have a safe place. |
| Il timor dell’Eterno è fonte di vita e fa schivare le insidie della morte. | The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, by which one may be turned from the nets of death. |
| La moltitudine del popolo è la gloria del re, ma la scarsezza de’ sudditi è la rovina del principe. | A king's glory is in the number of his people: and for need of people a ruler may come to destruction. |
| Chi è lento all’ira ha un gran buon senso, ma chi è pronto ad andare in collera mostra la sua follia. | He who is slow to be angry has great good sense; but he whose spirit is over-quick gives support to what is foolish. |
| Un cuor calmo è la vita del corpo, ma l’invidia è la carie dell’ossa. | A quiet mind is the life of the body, but envy is a disease in the bones. |
| Chi opprime il povero oltraggia Colui che l’ha fatto, ma chi ha pietà del bisognoso, l’onora. | He who is hard on the poor puts shame on his Maker; but he who has mercy on those who are in need gives him honour. |
| L’empio è travolto dalla sua sventura, ma il giusto spera anche nella morte. | The sinner is overturned in his evil-doing, but the upright man has hope in his righteousness. |
| La sapienza riposa nel cuore dell’uomo intelligente, ma in mezzo agli stolti si fa tosto conoscere. | Wisdom has her resting-place in the mind of the wise, but she is not seen among the foolish. |
| La giustizia innalza una nazione, ma il peccato è la vergogna dei popoli. | By righteousness a nation is lifted up, but sin is a cause of shame to the peoples. |
| Il favore del re è per il servo prudente, ma la sua ira è per chi gli fa onta. | The king has pleasure in a servant who does wisely, but his wrath is against him who is a cause of shame. |
