| La risposta dolce calma il furore, ma la parola dura eccita l’ira. | By a soft answer wrath is turned away, but a bitter word is a cause of angry feelings. |
| La lingua dei savi è ricca di scienza, ma la bocca degli stolti sgorga follia. | Knowledge is dropping from the tongue of the wise; but from the mouth of the foolish comes a stream of foolish words. |
| Gli occhi dell’Eterno sono in ogni luogo, osservando i cattivi ed i buoni. | The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good. |
| La lingua che calma, è un albero di vita, ma la lingua perversa strazia lo spirito. | A comforting tongue is a tree of life, but a twisted tongue is a crushing of the spirit. |
| L’insensato disdegna l’istruzione di suo padre, ma chi tien conto della riprensione diviene accorto. | A foolish man puts no value on his father's training; but he who has respect for teaching has good sense. |
| Nella casa del giusto v’è grande abbondanza, ma nell’entrate dell’empio c’è turbolenza. | In the house of the upright man there is a great store of wealth; but in the profits of the sinner there is trouble. |
| Le labbra dei savi spargono scienza, ma non così il cuore degli stolti. | The lips of the wise keep knowledge, but the heart of the foolish man is not right. |
| Il sacrifizio degli empi è in abominio all’Eterno, ma la preghiera degli uomini retti gli è grata. | The offering of the evil-doer is disgusting to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright man is his delight. |
| La via dell’empio è in abominio all’Eterno, ma egli ama chi segue la giustizia. | The way of the evil-doer is disgusting to the Lord, but he who goes after righteousness is dear to him. |
| Una dura correzione aspetta chi lascia la diritta via; chi odia la riprensione morrà. | There is bitter punishment for him who is turned from the way; and death will be the fate of the hater of teaching. |
| Il soggiorno de’ morti e l’abisso stanno dinanzi all’Eterno; quanto più i cuori de’ figliuoli degli uomini! | Before the Lord are the underworld and destruction: how much more, then, the hearts of the children of men! |
| Il beffardo non ama che altri lo riprenda; egli non va dai savi. | The hater of authority has no love for teaching: he will not go to the wise. |
| Il cuore allegro rende ilare il volto, ma quando il cuore è triste, lo spirito è abbattuto. | A glad heart makes a shining face, but by the sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. |
| Il cuor dell’uomo intelligente cerca la scienza, ma la bocca degli stolti si pasce di follia. | The heart of the man of good sense goes in search of knowledge, but foolish things are the food of the unwise. |
| Tutt’i giorni dell’afflitto sono cattivi, ma il cuor contento è un convito perenne. | All the days of the troubled are evil; but he whose heart is glad has an unending feast. |
| Meglio poco col timor dell’Eterno, che gran tesoro con turbolenza. | Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great wealth together with trouble. |
| Meglio un piatto d’erbe, dov’è l’amore, che un bove ingrassato, dov’è l’odio. | Better is a simple meal where love is, than a fat ox and hate with it. |
| L’uomo iracondo fa nascere contese, ma chi è lento all’ira acqueta le liti. | An angry man makes men come to blows, but he who is slow to get angry puts an end to fighting. |
| La via del pigro è come una siepe di spine, ma il sentiero degli uomini retti è piano. | Thorns are round the way of the hater of work; but the road of the hard worker becomes a highway. |
| Il figliuol savio rallegra il padre, ma l’uomo stolto disprezza sua madre. | A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man has no respect for his mother. |
| La follia è una gioia per chi è privo di senno, ma l’uomo prudente cammina retto per la sua via. | Foolish behaviour is joy to the unwise; but a man of good sense makes his way straight. |
| I disegni falliscono, dove mancano i consigli; ma riescono, dove son molti i consiglieri. | Where there are no wise suggestions, purposes come to nothing; but by a number of wise guides they are made certain. |
| Uno prova allegrezza quando risponde bene; e com’è buona una parola detta a tempo! | A man has joy in the answer of his mouth: and a word at the right time, how good it is! |
| Per l’uomo sagace la via della vita mena in alto e gli fa evitare il soggiorno de’ morti, in basso. | Acting wisely is the way of life, guiding a man away from the underworld. |
| L’Eterno spianta la casa dei superbi, ma rende stabili i confini della vedova. | The house of the man of pride will be uprooted by the Lord, but he will make safe the heritage of the widow. |
| I pensieri malvagi sono in abominio all’Eterno, ma le parole benevole son pure agli occhi suoi. | Evil designs are disgusting to the Lord, but the words of the clean-hearted are pleasing. |
| Chi è avido di lucro conturba la sua casa, ma chi odia i regali vivrà. | He whose desires are fixed on profit is a cause of trouble to his family; but he who has no desire for offerings will have life. |
| Il cuor del giusto medita la sua risposta, ma la bocca degli empi sgorga cose malvage. | The heart of the upright gives thought to his answer; but from the mouth of the evil-doer comes a stream of evil things. |
| L’Eterno è lungi dagli empi, ma ascolta la preghiera dei giusti. | The Lord is far from sinners, but his ear is open to the prayer of the upright. |
| Uno sguardo lucente rallegra il cuore; una buona notizia impingua l’ossa. | The light of the eyes is a joy to the heart, and good news makes the bones fat. |
| L’orecchio attento alla riprensione che mena a vita, dimorerà fra i savi. | The man whose ear is open to the teaching of life will have his place among the wise. |
| Chi rigetta l’istruzione disprezza l’anima sua, ma chi dà retta alla riprensione acquista senno. | He who will not be controlled by training has no respect for his soul, but he who gives ear to teaching will get wisdom. |
| Il timor dell’Eterno è scuola di sapienza; e l’umiltà precede la gloria. | The fear of the Lord is the teaching of wisdom; and a low opinion of oneself goes before honour. |
